    Parent training for preschool ADHD: a randomized controlled trial of specialized and generic programs

    BackgroundThe New Forest Parenting Package' (NFPP), an 8-week home-based intervention for parents of preschoolers with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), fosters constructive parenting to target ADHD-related dysfunctions in attention and impulse control. Although NFPP has improved parent and laboratory measures of ADHD in community samples of children with ADHD-like problems, its efficacy in a clinical sample, and relative to an active treatment comparator, is unknown. The aims are to evaluate the short- and long-term efficacy and generalization effects of NFPP compared to an established clinic-based parenting intervention for treating noncompliant behavior [Helping the Noncompliant Child' (HNC)] in young children with ADHD. MethodsA randomized controlled trial with three parallel arms was the design for this study. A total of 164 3-4-year-olds, 73.8% male, meeting DSM-IV ADHD diagnostic criteria were randomized to NFPP (N=67), HNC (N=63), or wait-list control (WL, N=34). All participants were assessed at post-treatment. NFPP and HNC participants were assessed at follow-up in the next school year. Primary outcomes were ADHD ratings by teachers blind to and uninvolved in treatment, and by parents. Secondary ADHD outcomes included clinician assessments, and laboratory measures of on-task behavior and delay of gratification. Other outcomes included parent and teacher ratings of oppositional behavior, and parenting measures. ResultsIn both treatment groups, children's ADHD and ODD behaviors, as well as aspects of parenting, were rated improved by parents at the end of treatment compared to controls. Most of these gains in the children's behavior and in some parenting practices were sustained at follow-up. However, these parent-reported improvements were not corroborated by teacher ratings or objective observations. NFPP was not significantly better, and on a few outcomes significantly less effective, than HNC. ConclusionsThe results do not support the claim that NFPP addresses putative dysfunctions underlying ADHD, bringing about generalized change in ADHD, and its underpinning self-regulatory processes. The findings support documented difficulties in achieving generalization across nontargeted settings, and the importance of using blinded measures to provide meaningful assessments of treatment effects

    A robust and efficient hybrid solver for crystal plasticity

    Conventional crystal plasticity (CP) solvers are based on a Newton-Raphson (NR) approach which use an initial guess for the free variables (often stress) to be solved. These solvers are limited by a finite interval of convergence and often fail when the free variable falls outside this interval. Solution failure results in the reduction of the time increment to be solved, thus convergence of the CP solver is a bottleneck which determines the computational cost of the simulation. The numerical stability of the slip law in its inverted form offers a solver that isn't vulnerable to poor pre-conditioning (initial guess) and can be used to progress to a solution from a stable starting point (i.e., from zero slip rate γ˙pk=0 s−1). In this paper, a novel formulation that enables the application of the slip law in its inverted form is introduced; this treats all slip systems as independent by approximating the Jacobian as a diagonal matrix, thus overcomes ill-defined and singular Jacobians associated with previous approaches. This scheme was demonstrated to offer superior robustness and convergence rate for a case with a single slip system, however the convergence rate for extreme cases with several active slip systems was relatively poor. Here, we introduce a novel ‘hybrid scheme’ that first uses the reverse scheme for the first stage of the solution, and then transitions to the forward scheme to complete the solution at a higher convergence rate. Several examples are given for pointwise calculations, followed by CPFEM simulations for FCC copper and HCP Zircaloy-4, which demonstrated solver performance in practise. The performance of simulations using the hybrid scheme was shown to require six to nine times fewer increments compared to the conventional forward scheme solver based on a free variable of stress and initial guess based on a fully elastic increment

    The Long-Run Relationship between House Prices and Income in Malaysia

    In recent times, the growth rate of house prices has significantly outpaced income growth in Malaysia. Affordability of housing is now a major concern for many Malaysians especially the younger generation. This issue of house price outpacing income, however, is not unique to Malaysia as many countries have faced this issue. This has led to much empirical research done with regards to housing affordability. There are empirical researchers who argue that house prices must reflect its fundamentals in the long-run, meaning the gap between house price and income cannot keep growing larger and larger. Sooner or later prices must stagnate or fall for income to catch up. Using data from 1999 to 2015, I have tested this theory by employing two cointegration techniques. Testing the data using the traditional Engle & Granger test found no cointegrating relationship between house price and income. However, re-testing the data set with the more recently developed and more sophisticated bounds testing approach of Pesaran, Shin & Smith, I find empirical evidence that house price is cointegrated with income, construction cost and wealth. This implies that in the long-run, house prices in Malaysia must stagnate or fall to reflect its fundamentals more closely. However, there is no telling how long this might take especially if prices are currently not fundamentals-driven but are actually over-inflated due to the possibility of a housing market bubble. Thus in the short-run, many Malaysians will continue to suffer if the government does not take steps to alleviate the situation and possibly help restore this equilibrium relationship between house price and income that many researchers believe exists. Public policies such as macroprudential tools to curb speculation and over-investment should be imposed by the government so that prices are able to reflect its fundamental values more closely

    Which type of parent training works best for preschoolers with comorbid ADHD and ODD? A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing generic and specialized programs

    The present study examined whether the presence of comorbid ODD differentially moderated the outcome of two Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) programs in a sample of preschoolers with ADHD: One designed specifically for ADHD (NFPP: New Forest Parenting Programme) and one designed primarily for ODD (HNC: Helping the Noncompliant Child). In a secondary analysis, 130 parents and their 3-4 year-old children diagnosed with ADHD were assigned to one of the two programs. 44.6 % of the children also met criteria for ODD. Significant interactions between treatment conditions (NFPP vs. HNC) and child ODD diagnosis (presence vs. absence) indicated that based on some parent and teacher reports, HNC was more effective with disruptive behaviors than NFPP but only when children had a comorbid diagnosis. Further, based on teacher report, NFPP was more effective with these behaviors when children had a diagnosis of only ADHD whereas HNC was equally effective across ADHD only and comorbid ODD diagnoses. Comorbidity profile did not interact with treatment program when parent or teacher reported ADHD symptoms served as the outcome. Implications for clinical interventions are discussed and directions for future work are provided

    NICMOS Observations of the Transiting Hot Jupiter XO-1b

    We refine the physical parameters of the transiting hot Jupiter planet XO-1b and its stellar host XO-1 using HST NICMOS observations. XO-1b has a radius Rp=1.21+/-0.03 RJup, and XO-1 has a radius Rs=0.94+/-0.02 RSun, where the uncertainty in the mass of XO-1 dominates the uncertainty of Rp and Rs. There are no significant differences in the XO-1 system properties between these broad-band NIR observations and previous determinations based upon ground-based optical observations. We measure two transit timings from these observations with 9 s and 15 s precision. As a residual to a linear ephemeris model, there is a 2.0 sigma timing difference between the two HST visits that are separated by 3 transit events (11.8 days). These two transit timings and additional timings from the literature are sufficient to rule out the presence of an Earth mass planet orbiting in 2:1 mean motion resonance coplanar with XO-1b. We identify and correct for poorly understood gain-like variations present in NICMOS time series data.
