    X-ray Studies of Two Neutron Stars in 47 Tucanae: Toward Constraints on the Equation of State

    We report spectral and variability analysis of two quiescent low mass X-ray binaries (X5 and X7, previously detected with the ROSAT HRI) in a Chandra ACIS-I observation of the globular cluster 47 Tuc. X5 demonstrates sharp eclipses with an 8.666+-0.01 hr period, as well as dips showing an increased N_H column. The thermal spectra of X5 and X7 are well-modeled by unmagnetized hydrogen atmospheres of hot neutron stars. No hard power law component is required. A possible edge or absorption feature is identified near 0.64 keV, perhaps an OV edge from a hot wind. Spectral fits imply that X7 is significantly more massive than the canonical 1.4 \Msun neutron star mass, with M>1.8 \Msun for a radius range of 9-14 km, while X5's spectrum is consistent with a neutron star of mass 1.4 \Msun for the same radius range. Alternatively, if much of the X-ray luminosity is due to continuing accretion onto the neutron star surface, the feature may be the 0.87 keV rest-frame absorption complex (O VIII & other metal lines) intrinsic to the neutron star atmosphere, and a mass of 1.4 \Msun for X7 may be allowed.Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted by Ap

    At what stage in the drinking process does drinking water affect attention and memory? Effects of mouth rinsing and mouth drying in adults

    Drinking water is important for health and there is agreement that drinking water facilitates certain cognitive processes. However, the mechanism underlying the effect of drinking water on cognition is unknown. While attention performance is improved by even a very small drink, memory performance seems to require larger drinks for performance enhancement. This suggests that attention could be affected earlier in the drinking process than memory. We aimed to elucidate further the mechanism involved, by investigating the stage during the drinking process influencing performance on cognitive tasks. To this end, we compared mouth rinsing and mouth drying. Mouth rinsing was expected to result in improved attention performance and would suggest that the mechanism responsible is located in the mouth and occurs early in the drinking process, before swallowing. Eighty-seven adults participated in either a treatment (mouth rinsing or mouth drying) or control (no intervention) condition. They were assessed at baseline and 20 minutes later after intervention on measures of visual attention, short-term memory, subjective thirst and mood. Our results showed that mouth rinsing improved visual attention, but not short-term memory, mood or subjective thirst. Mouth drying did not affect performance. Our results support the hypothesis that different mechanisms underlie the effect of drinking water on different cognitive processes. They suggest that merely sipping water, as opposed to having a large drink, can improve attention

    Multi-copy programmable discrimination of general qubit states

    Quantum state discrimination is a fundamental primitive in quantum statistics where one has to correctly identify the state of a system that is in one of two possible known states. A programmable discrimination machine performs this task when the pair of possible states is not a priori known, but instead the two possible states are provided through two respective program ports. We study optimal programmable discrimination machines for general qubit states when several copies of states are available in the data or program ports. Two scenarios are considered: one in which the purity of the possible states is a priori known, and the fully universal one where the machine operates over generic mixed states of unknown purity. We find analytical results for both, the unambiguous and minimum error, discrimination strategies. This allows us to calculate the asymptotic performance of programmable discrimination machines when a large number of copies is provided, and to recover the standard state discrimination and state comparison values as different limiting cases.Comment: Based on version published in Physical Review A, some errors in appendix A corrected. 13 pages, 4 figure

    Semiclassical Analysis of the Wigner 12j12j Symbol with One Small Angular Momentum

    We derive an asymptotic formula for the Wigner 12j12j symbol, in the limit of one small and 11 large angular momenta. There are two kinds of asymptotic formulas for the 12j12j symbol with one small angular momentum. We present the first kind of formula in this paper. Our derivation relies on the techniques developed in the semiclassical analysis of the Wigner 9j9j symbol [L. Yu and R. G. Littlejohn, Phys. Rev. A 83, 052114 (2011)], where we used a gauge-invariant form of the multicomponent WKB wave-functions to derive asymptotic formulas for the 9j9j symbol with small and large angular momenta. When applying the same technique to the 12j12j symbol in this paper, we find that the spinor is diagonalized in the direction of an intermediate angular momentum. In addition, we find that the geometry of the derived asymptotic formula for the 12j12j symbol is expressed in terms of the vector diagram for a 9j9j symbol. This illustrates a general geometric connection between asymptotic limits of the various 3nj3nj symbols. This work contributes the first known asymptotic formula for the 12j12j symbol to the quantum theory of angular momentum, and serves as a basis for finding asymptotic formulas for the Wigner 15j15j symbol with two small angular momenta.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure

    The diet of woodland caribou populations in west-central Alberta

    The diet of woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) populations in the foothills and Rocky Mountains of west-central Alberta was estimated by microhistological analyses of feces collected in winter and summer. In winter, terrestrial lichens averaged 60-83% of fecal fragment densities in both areas. In the mountains, decreasing proportions of terrestrial lichens and increasing proportions of conifer needles and moss indicated decreasing accessibility of forage because of deeper/harder snow. Apparent diets in summer were dominated by Salix spp., sedges, and lichens. However, forb inflorescences and stems were largely undetected by the microhistological technique and results for summer samples must be interpreted accordingly. We conclude that the conservation and management of forest ecotypes of caribou must include options of lichen-rich habitats as a major component of management plans

    Three Additional Quiescent Low-Mass X-ray Binary Candidates in 47 Tucanae

    We identify through their X-ray spectra one certain (W37) and two probable (W17 and X4) quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs) containing neutron stars in a long Chandra X-ray exposure of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, in addition to the two previously known qLMXBs. W37's spectrum is dominated by a blackbody-like component consistent with radiation from the hydrogen atmosphere of a 10 km neutron star. W37's lightcurve shows strong X-ray variability which we attribute to variations in its absorbing column depth, and eclipses with a probable 3.087 hour period. For most of our exposures, W37's blackbody-like emission (assumed to be from the neutron star surface) is almost completely obscured, yet some soft X-rays (of uncertain origin) remain. Two additional candidates, W17 and X4, present X-ray spectra dominated by a harder component, fit by a power-law of photon index ~1.6-3. An additional soft component is required for both W17 and X4, which can be fit with a 10 km hydrogen-atmosphere neutron star model. X4 shows significant variability, which may arise from either its power-law or hydrogen-atmosphere spectral component. Both W17 and X4 show rather low X-ray luminosities, Lx(0.5-10 keV)~5*10^{31} ergs/s. All three candidate qLMXBs would be difficult to identify in other globular clusters, suggesting an additional reservoir of fainter qLMXBs in globular clusters that may be of similar numbers as the group of previously identified objects. The number of millisecond pulsars inferred to exist in 47 Tuc is less than 10 times larger than the number of qLMXBs in 47 Tuc, indicating that for typical inferred lifetimes of 10 and 1 Gyr respectively, their birthrates are comparable.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 13 pages, 7 figures (2 color
