This final project synthesized discussion and learning from four different books: To Teach: The Journey in Comics by W. Ayers and R. Alexander-Tanner, Musician and Teacher: An Orientation to Music Education by P. S. Campbell, Teaching as a Subversive Activity by N. Postman and C. Weingartner, and Pedagogy of the Oppressed by P. Freire. Through a series of letters to a teacher, Mr. Carter, the letter writers demonstrate the important ideas presented in each of the books

Dynamics of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains

    Get PDF
We study the low-energy collective excitations and dynamical response functions of weakly coupled random antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains. The interchain coupling leads to Neel order at low temperatures. We use the real-space renormalization group technique to tackle the intrachain couplings and treat the interchain couplings within the Random Phase Approximation (RPA). We show that the system supports collective spin wave excitations, and calculate the spin wave velocity and spectra weight within RPA. Comparisons will be made with inelastic neutron scattering experiments quasi-one-dimensional disordered spin systems such as doped CuGeO3_3Comment: 4 page

Probing the effect of point defects on the leakage blocking capability of Al0.1Ga0.9N/Si structures using a monoenergetic positron beam

Vacancy-type defects in Al0.1Ga0.9N were probed using a monoenergetic positron beam. Al0.1Ga0.9N layers with different carbon doping concentrations ([C] = 5 x 10(17) -8 x 10(19) cm(-3)) were grown on Si substrates by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The major defect species in Al0.1Ga0.9N was determined to be a cation vacancy (or cation vacancies) coupled with nitrogen vacancies and/or with carbon atoms at nitrogen sites (C(N)s). The charge state of the vacancies was positive because of the electron transfer from the defects to C-N-related acceptors. The defect charge state was changed from positive to neutral when the sample was illuminated with photon energy above 1.8 eV, and this energy range agreed with the yellow and blue luminescence. For the sample with high [C], the charge transition of the vacancies under illumination was found to be suppressed, which was attributed to the trapping of emitted electrons by C-N-related acceptors. With increasing [C], the breakdown voltage under the reverse bias condition increased. This was explained by the trapping of the injected electrons by the positively charged vacancies and C-N-related acceptors

Diesel fuel extender from animal waste

    Get PDF
An increase in the quantity of food is required to meet the demand of an increasing in the population. The agricultural industry continues to grow to meet this demand. This thesis focuses on a new method to deal with the increasing amount of animal waste that is produced as a result of the increasing food demand. By reacting animal waste with an aqueous solution and diesel fuel, a major fraction of the waste becomes a diesel fuel extender. The extended diesel fuel contains no ash and has a viscosity similar to conventional diesel fuel. The extended diesel fuel contains 20% dissolved hog manure produced by reaction with an aqueous solution of 40% propanol and 60% water. Initial experiments have shown that the extended diesel fuel can be run in a diesel engine with no modifications

Study on Communal Wastewater Treatment Plants (CWWTPs) in Gresik, Indonesia

Communal wastewater treatment plants (CWWTPs) with sewer system has been built by local government in Gresik Regency to achieve sanitation strategy by 2012-2016. There are seven CWWTPS in Gresik; Bedilan, Singosari 1, Roomo, Sidorukun, Karangturi, Singosari 2, and Singosari 3. Each of CWWTP is maintained by the community and known as KPP (Kelompok Pengguna Pemelihara or community group of users and maintainers). CWWTPs have some operational problems due to minimum maintenance. Therefore, evaluation of CWWTPs is needed to determine whether field maintenance program complies with the guidelines. Efficiency in term of BOD removal for the 7 CWWTPs is between 79-96% and it complies with design criteria; except Bedilan CWWTP where removal of COD is 52.7% and it could not comply with the design criteria while removal of oil and grease is only up to 13%. One of the reasons for these failure was due to poor monitoring. Local communities have poor understanding regarding the duties and functions of KPP due to little information regarding KPP in the villages

To strengthen the economy of one country, it must be done by strengthening and accelerating industry and trade. The implementation of both activities, actually, can not be separated with export and import activities as well as to the service which create the relationship among the people who have different countries. The relationship can stay in harmony if the hardware of both activities and all its aspects can be accommodated by the appointment which is Internationally designed. The aspect of the contract of franchise, object of law franchise can be seen from the subject of loan franchise, object of law franchise, the right and obligation of the parties, marketing area, the length of franchise business, the solution of the dispute, compensation, the way of paying the return, the creation, the guidance and the training to “the franchisee” and the registration and the authority of issuing the STPUW
