Equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV) is distributed in nearly the whole world. Since there is
no vaccine or treatment for infected individuals, the virus is a challenge for all of the
industries containing horses. EIAV is one of the lentiviruses in the family retroviruses and
causes persistent infections in horses. Even though the immune system is able to control the
virus, it can never eliminate it totally. One of the reasons that makes it possible for the virus to
persist is its ability to antigenic variation and with that escape the immune system.
The ability to escape the immune system derives from different mechanisms, which one is
believed to be the capability of the immune system itself to impel development of the virus.
This is one of the difficulties of EIAV and because of this, a number of different investigations
have been made with the aim of understanding the function of the immune system at EIAVinfections.
Studies have included the first steps of trying to map the immune system against
EIAV and also which part of the immune system that might be active during different stages
of infection. To investigate these components, healthy individuals have been exposed for
EIAV and studied, these experiments have also been done in horses with severe combined
immunodeficiency (SCID).
Horses with SCID have a dysfunctional immune system. The B- and T-cells of SCID-horses
are not functional due to a mutation in a gene coding for an enzyme necessary for a successful
gene rearrangement. Rearrangement is essential to produce functional receptors for B- and Tcells,
if the rearrangement is intervened no antigen receptors are generated and development
of the cells stops.
Individuals with SCID enable a unique environment to study EIAV in. The lack of adaptive
immune system constitutes a situation where itâs possible to alter the environment in which
the virus is studied to the right preferences. It is possible to study specific responses of the
immune system and when the responses occur related to the progression of the infection.
What has been stated in all studies is that the immune response has an important role in the
development of EIAV in an individual, but itâs still not clear which part of the immune system
that is active in which stage of the infection.
The purpose of this report is to summarize if SCID in horses is considered to be a good model
for studying EIAV and if itâs possible to map the immune response against the virus with
further studies using this model. Could this help in the development of a vaccine?
It seems like foals with SCID constitute an invaluable resource in the research about EIAV
and the immune system following infection. Studies made in foals with the disorder have
helped to map the immune response, but thereâs still a long way to go. The studies have made
a basis for further studies and also brought more thoughts into the field regarding vaccine and
specific epitopes. In summary, more research is needed to fully understand the immune
response against EIAV and to eventually find the way to make an efficient vaccine

Interaction of solid organic acids with carbon nanotube field effect transistors
A series of solid organic acids were used to p-dope carbon nanotubes. The
extent of doping is shown to be dependent on the pKa value of the acids. Highly
fluorinated carboxylic acids and sulfonic acids are very effective in shifting
the threshold voltage and making carbon nanotube field effect transistors to be
more p-type devices. Weaker acids like phosphonic or hydroxamic acids had less
effect. The doping of the devices was accompanied by a reduction of the
hysteresis in the transfer characteristics. In-solution doping survives
standard fabrication processes and renders p-doped carbon nanotube field effect
transistors with good transport characteristics.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
