    Moving towards more responsible fishing practices in Australia’s northern prawn fishery

    Bycatch in Australia s Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) is extremely diverse in both species and size composition. This makes developing responsible fishing practices to reduce the amount of bycatch in the NPF, a complex process. During this study we assessed the performance of Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs) that could be used in the NPF. We tested 16 different BRDs which can be grouped into one of 3 categories: (1) inclined grids (2) fish exclusion devices and (3) square-mesh codends. Four inclined grids were tested during our study. All the grids were extremely effective at excluding large animals such as sharks, stingrays and sea turtles. Three different fish exclusion devices were tested. Fish exclusion ranged between 0 and 39 percent, depending on the device. Prawn retention rates for both inclined grids and fish exclusion devices varied between devices. Two sizes of square-mesh codend (38 mm and 45 mm) were also tested. More than 95% of market-sized prawns were retained. Fish exclusion varied greatly between species. Optimum exclusion of bycatch for the NPF could be provided by a combination of devices from each of the three categories

    Ecological sustainability of bycatch and biodiversity in prawn trawl fisheries

    Prawn trawl fisheries are under increasing public and legislative pressure to manage their by-catch sustainably, but by-catch cannot be managed without knowing what and how much is caught. This project focused on the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF), the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery (TSPF) and the Queensland Banana Prawn Fishery. The objectives of this study were: to undertake a literature review of prawn trawl by-catch and of methods for estimating and monitoring by-catch of prawn trawl fisheries from published information to add to the already substantial literature database on by-catch reduction devices; to compile a detailed description of the by-catch in the NPF and TSPF (tiger and banana prawns) and Queensland East Coast banana prawn fisheries to provide a reference against which future assessment can be made; to measure the impact of prawn trawling on the sustainability of important vertebrate by-catch species, particularly those that may be vulnerable or endangered, and for those by-catch species for which no significant reductions can be achieved; to assess the effects of prawn trawling on the biodiversity of key fish and other vertebrate communities; and to develop cost-effective, accurate and feasible methods of describing and monitoring prawn trawl by-catch that would be acceptable to all stakeholders. The high diversity of by-catch of these tropical prawn fisheries, and the fact that most species are rare, means that managing the sustainability of the by-catch is a significant challenge

    Prioritization of knowledge-needs to achieve best practices for bottom trawling in relation to seabed habitats

    Management and technical approaches that achieve a sustainable level of fish production while at the same time minimizing or limiting the wider ecological effects caused through fishing gear contact with the seabed might be considered to be ‘best practice’. To identify future knowledge-needs that would help to support a transition towards the adoption of best practices for trawling, a prioritization exercise was undertaken with a group of 39 practitioners from the seafood industry and management, and 13 research scientists who have an active research interest in bottom-trawl and dredge fisheries. A list of 108 knowledge-needs related to trawl and dredge fisheries was developed in conjunction with an ‘expert task force’. The long list was further refined through a three stage process of voting and scoring, including discussions of each knowledge-need. The top 25 knowledge-needs are presented, as scored separately by practitioners and scientists. There was considerable consistency in the priorities identified by these two groups. The top priority knowledge-need to improve current understanding on the distribution and extent of different habitat types also reinforced the concomitant need for the provision and access to data on the spatial and temporal distribution of all forms of towed bottom-fishing activities. Many of the other top 25 knowledge-needs concerned the evaluation of different management approaches or implementation of different fishing practices, particularly those that explore trade-offs between effects of bottom trawling on biodiversity and ecosystem services and the benefits of fish production as food.Fil: Kaiser, Michel J..     Flow-related effects in prawn-trawl codends: Potential for increasing the escape of unwanted fish through square-mesh panels

    Two experiments were done in a flume tank to quantify the effects of codend mesh circumference and weight of catch on water flow. The mesh circumference of the posterior section of prawn-trawl codends (with and without bycatch reducing square-mesh panels) were assessed with three weights of catch (30 kg, 50 kg, and 70 kg). Compared with a codend with a circumference of 100 meshes throughout its entire length, a codend with an anterior section of 100 meshes and a posterior section of 200 meshes in circumference significantly increased the displacement of water forwards (up to 1120 mm from the end of the codend). This result varied with the weight of catch in the codend. The second experiment involved placing composite panels of square-shaped mesh (bycatch reducing devices) into the tops of the anterior sections of two codends with the same configurations as those above (termed the '100 panel codend' and '200 panel codend,' respectively). There was a displacement of water forwards immediately under the square-mesh panel in the 200 panel codend (by up to 2200 mm from the end of the codend). The results are discussed in terms of 1) the probable effects that codend mesh circumference and water displacement in codends have on fish behavior, and 2) implications for the future development of bycatch reducing devices like square-mesh panels in prawn-trawls

    The Midcoast Fishermen\u27s Association was formed in Port Clyde as a nonprofit advocacy group in 2006. A year later, the group launched the Midcoast Fishermen\u27s Cooperative to market members\u27 catch and provide a direct link between fishermen and consumers. The group developed the state\u27s first Community Supported Fishery, modeled after the Community Supported Agriculture movement. It created a business-marketing model and the Port Clyde Fresh Catch brand. At the core of the group\u27s efforts is a strong conservation ethic, focused on catching low volumes of high-quality fish.
