Spatially Rendering Decomposed Recordings - Integrating Score-Informed Source Separation and Semantic Playback Technologies
In this contribution, we present a system for creating novel renderings of a given music recording that aurally highlight certain musical aspects or semantics using spatial localiza-tions. The system decomposes a monaural audio recording into separate events using score-informed source separa-tion techniques and prepares them for an interactive mobile player that renders audio based on semantic information. We demonstrate the capabilities of the system by means of an example using an immersive chroma helix model which the listener can navigate in realtime using mobile sensor controls. 1
Is a Space Laundry Needed for Exploration?
Future human space exploration missions will lengthen to years, and keeping crews clothed without a huge resupply burden is an important consideration for habitation systems. A space laundry system could be the solution; however, the resources it uses must be accounted for and must win out over the very reliable practice of bringing along enough spare underwear. Through NASA's Logistics Reduction and Repurposing project, trade off studies have been conducted to compare current space clothing systems, life extension of that clothing, traditional water based clothes washing and other sanitizing techniques. The best clothing system of course depends on the mission and assumptions, but in general, analysis results indicate that washing clothes on space missions will start to pay off as mission durations push past a year

The bradykinin BK2 receptor mediates angiotensin II receptor type 2 stimulated rat duodenal mucosal alkaline secretion
BACKGROUND: This study investigates bradykinin and nitric oxide as potential mediators of AT2-receptor-stimulated duodenal mucosal alkaline secretion. Duodenal mucosal alkaline secretion was measured in methohexital- and α-chloralose-anaesthetised rats by means of in situ pH-stat titration. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot were used to identify the BK2 receptors. RESULTS: The AT2 receptor agonist CGP42112A (0.1 μg kg(-1 )min(-1)) administered intravenously increased the duodenal mucosal alkaline secretion by ~50 %. This increase was sensitive to the selective BK2 receptor blocker HOE140 (100 ng/kg iv), but not to luminal administration of the NOS blocker L-NAME (0.3 mM). Mean arterial pressure did not differ between groups during the procedures. Immunohistochemistry showed a distinct staining of the crypt epithelium and a moderate staining of basal cytoplasm in villus enterocytes. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the AT2-receptor-stimulated alkaline secretion is mediated via BK2 receptors located in the duodenal cryptal mucosal epithelium
Towards democratic intelligence oversight: Limits, practices, struggles
Despite its common usage, The meaning of 'democratic' in democratic intelligence oversight has rarely been spelled out. In this paper, we situate questions regarding intelligence oversight within broader debates about the meanings and practices of democracy. We argue that the literature on intelligence oversight has tended to implicitly or explicitly follow liberal and technocratic ideas of democracy, which have limited the understanding of oversight both in academia and in practice. Thus, oversight is mostly understood as an expert, institutional and partially exclusive arrangement that is supposed to strike a balance between individual freedom and collective security with the goal of establishing the legitimacy of, and trust in intelligence work in a national setting. ‘Healthy’ or ‘efficient’ democratic oversight then becomes a matter of technical expertise, non-partisanship, and the ability to guard secrets. By analysing three moments of struggle around what counts as intelligence oversight across Germany, the UK, and the USA, this paper elucidates their democratic stakes. Through a practice-based approach, we argue that oversight takes much more agonistic, contentious, transnational, and public forms. However, these democratic practices reconfiguring oversight remain contested or contained by dominant views on what constitutes legitimate and effective intelligence oversight

The Baseline Values and Assumptions Document (BVAD) provides analysts, modelers, and other life support researchers with a common set of values and assumptions which can be used as a baseline in their studies. This baseline, in turn, provides a common point of origin from which many studies in the community may depart, making research results easier to compare and providing researchers with reasonable values to assume for areas outside their experience. This document identifies many specific physical quantities that define life support systems, serving as a general reference for spacecraft life support system technology developers
Microstructural characterization and simulation of damage for geared sheet components
The evolution of damage in geared components manufactured from steel sheets was investigated, to analyse the influence of damage caused by the sheet-bulk-metal forming. Due to the inhomogeneous and multi-axial deformation in the investigated parts, different aspects such as the location-dependent shape and size of voids are analysed by means of various microscopic methods. In particular, a method to characterize the state of damage evolution, i. e. void nucleation, growth and coalescence using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is applied. The investigations reveal a strong dependence of the void area fraction, shape of voids and thus damage evolution on the loading mode. The microstructural analysis is complemented with FEM simulations using material models which consider the characteristics of the void evolution. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd
Threats for Global Food Supply of Increasing Surface Ozone - Spatial Assessment of Impacts and Adaptation Options
Surface ozone (O3) is a potent phytotoxic air pollutant and significantly reduces the productivity of important agricultural crops. Growing use of fossil fuel and changes in climate are increasing the global background surface ozone concentrations to levels that threaten regional and global food supply. We performed an integrated modeling study, considering biophysical and crop management factors, to identify the spatial pattern of ozone damage in lands suitable for crop cultivation and to assess the potential for adaptation for four key crops (wheat, maize, rice and soybean) under current and future air quality legislation. Results indicate that China, India and the United States are by far the most affected countries, bearing more than half of all global losses and threatened areas. Short-erm adaptive measures at farm level, such as shifting crop calendars (by changing sowing dates or using crop cultivars with different cycle lengths) can reduce ozone damage regionally but have only limited impact at the global level. Considering these limited benefits of adaptation, mitigation of O3 precursors remains the main option to secure regional and global food production
