GTI-space : the space of generalized topological indices
A new extension of the generalized topological indices (GTI) approach is carried out torepresent 'simple' and 'composite' topological indices (TIs) in an unified way. Thisapproach defines a GTI-space from which both simple and composite TIs represent particular subspaces. Accordingly, simple TIs such as Wiener, Balaban, Zagreb, Harary and Randićconnectivity indices are expressed by means of the same GTI representation introduced for composite TIs such as hyper-Wiener, molecular topological index (MTI), Gutman index andreverse MTI. Using GTI-space approach we easily identify mathematical relations between some composite and simple indices, such as the relationship between hyper-Wiener and Wiener index and the relation between MTI and first Zagreb index. The relation of the GTI space with the sub-structural cluster expansion of property/activity is also analysed and some routes for the applications of this approach to QSPR/QSAR are also given
Fluid-solid transition in hard hyper-sphere systems
In this work we present a numerical study, based on molecular dynamics
simulations, to estimate the freezing point of hard spheres and hypersphere
systems in dimension D = 4, 5, 6 and 7. We have studied the changes of the
Radial Distribution Function (RDF) as a function of density in the coexistence
region. We started our simulations from crystalline states with densities above
the melting point, and moved down to densities in the liquid state below the
freezing point. For all the examined dimensions (including D = 3) it was
observed that the height of the first minimum of the RDF changes in an almost
continuous way around the freezing density and resembles a second order phase
transition. With these results we propose a numerical method to estimate the
freezing point as a function of the dimension D using numerical fits and
semiempirical approaches. We find that the estimated values of the freezing
point are very close to previously reported values from simulations and
theoretical approaches up to D = 6 reinforcing the validity of the proposed
method. This was also applied to numerical simulations for D = 7 giving new
estimations of the freezing point for this dimensionality.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure
A statistical mechanics description of environmental variability in metabolic networks
Many of the chemical reactions that take place within a living cell are irreversible. Due to evolutionary pressures, the number of allowable reactions within these systems are highly constrained and thus the resulting metabolic networks display considerable asymmetry. In this paper, we explore possible evolutionary factors pertaining to the reduced symmetry observed in these networks, and demonstrate the important role environmental variability plays in shaping their structural organization. Interpreting the returnability index as an equilibrium constant for a reaction network in equilibrium with a hypothetical reference system, enables us to quantify the extent to which a metabolic network is in disequilibrium. Further, by introducing a new directed centrality measure via an extension of the subgraph centrality metric to directed networks, we are able to characterise individual metabolites by their participation within metabolic pathways. To demonstrate these ideas, we study 116 metabolic networks of bacteria. In particular, we find that the equilibrium constant for the metabolic networks decreases significantly in-line with variability in bacterial habitats, supporting the view that environmental variability promotes disequilibrium within these biochemical reaction system
Gastric perforation and pancreatitis manifesting after an inadvertent nissen fundoplication in a patient with superior mesenteric artery syndrome.
Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome is an uncommon but well-recognized clinical entity. It can lead to proximal small bowel obstruction and severe morbidity and mortality in lieu of late diagnosis and concomitant existing comorbidities. We report a 54-year-old female, with SMA syndrome which manifested itself after Nissen fundoplication along with two major complications. The diagnosis of SMA was established by clinical symptoms and radiological findings
Viscosity near phase transitions
Probably the most enticing observation in theoretical physics during the last
decade was the discovery of the great amount of consequences obtained from the
AdS/CFT conjecture put forward by Maldacena. In this work we review how this
correspondence can be used to address hydrodynamic properties such as the
viscosity of some strongly interacting systems. We also employ the Boltzmann
equation for those systems closer to low-energy QCD, and argue that this kind
of transport coefficients can be related to phase transitions, in particular

Learning and inclusion in the Early Years
This paper considers inclusion in the early years from the perspective of a social model of learning articulated by Wenger (1998). This model is used to highlight key areas of teaching and learning in the early years that enhance participation and achievement. Implications for change in early years settings are considered alongside some priorities for professional development
