Style, Language and Gender in Angela Carter's "Fireworks": A Metaphorical (De) Construction of Female Identity
Najpierw pozbawia je podmiotowości, by następnie przypisać im jej nowy wymiar. Analiza obejmuje m.in. przyglądanie się roli często używanych zaimków (on, ona, my), czasowników (zaufać, niszczyć) i rzeczowników (broń, rana). Ponadto autorka bada funkcje występujących w opowiadaniach dychotomii (podmiot/przedmiot, ja/inny) oraz symboli (wrak statku, ogień, lustro)
importante vertente enquanto acto comunicativo.
focando a respectiva aplicabilidade linguística.
This thesis aims to investigate and discuss the ways in which humour is linguistically
and pragmatically rendered in English literary narratives. Being an elusive and polemic object
of analysis, humour takes on further configurational complexities in the corpus under focus.
Be it on the linguistic, narrative, literary or communicative levels, humorous short stories
require an interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological background. Although the title of
this work generically reads "discourse analysis", insights from other disciplines - such as
morpho-syntax, lexico-semantics, narratology, conversational analysis, sociology and
cognitive theory - also come into play.
The first chapter consists of a critical review of the conceptual and lexicological
evolution of humour throughout history, as well as the polemics relative to its definition.
Besides, it looks into the three main theories of humour - namely Disparagement, Release
and Incongruity - with a great emphasis on their linguistic applicability. The important
dimension of humour as a communicative act is also discussed.
The second chapter focuses on the specifically linguistic resources which humour
makes use of. By quoting varied examples, taken from the corpus and beyond, this
discussion tries to assess the humorous potential that the different levels of linguistic analysis
conceal. Therefore, sounds, morphemes, words and sentences, as well as questions
regarding colocational and logical games, are analysed so as to foreground the vital issue of
ambiguity, which keys different types of pun and comic effect.
The third chapter, one step further in this centripetal approach, concentrates on the
textual dimension of humour, seeking to unveil the general principles which render
humorous texts a specific genre. On the double level of the joke and the comic tale, this
comparative analysis tries to evaluate the relevance of the linguistic theories of the joke
(especially Raskin's and Giora's) for the understanding of longer and far more complex
textual sequences.
In view of the gaps detected in the state-of-the-art, but also taking into account the
operativeness of some of the contributions reviewed, the fourth chapter seeks to
complement the theoretical background discussed so far, by searching for more complete
analytical and methodological tools. On the "text / utterance" level, it makes a critical, albeit
succint, approach to narratological issues, highlighting those that are operative for the
analysis of humorous stories. On the "context / uttering" level, it discusses a few crucial
points - illustrated with examples from the corpus - relative to the pragmatics of comic
narratives.
The fifth and last chapter puts forward a model of analysis of humorous narratives. It
is allegedly "alternative" to the extent that it emphasizes a non-linear approach to textual
information, and it consists of five semantico-pragmatic principles, which hypothetically
regulate all comic narrative texts. This model is applied deductively to the seven texts
selected. The analysis of each of these departs from a descriptive account of its linguistic and
structural organization, so as to eventually assess its degree of conformity to the model
proposed. Time will then come to confirm the existence of meaning and discourse
regularities in literary narrative comedy which transcend its thematic, stylistic and formal
diversity.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologi

Scraping news sites and social networks for prejudice term analysis
Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) has paved the way for new patterns of linguistic aggravation. Hidden behind the screen, anyone can comment on any other person's opinion using an offensive or injurious tone. Besides, types of prejudice such as homophobia, sexism, racism, xenophobia, anticlericalism, body/addiction shaming, among others, are easily found nowadays in social networks and other forms of interactive Web sites potentiated by Web 2.0. This increasing violence deserves further investigation from different academic perspectives, among which Sociolinguistics stands out. This paper is concerned with the design and development of a set of computer-based tools to collect articles and posts with the respective comment threads that can be used as sources to extract prejudice terms and allow different analyses to be conducted. These prejudice terms were devised using a sociolinguistic variable stratificat ion approach. We will focus on the filters used to extract the relevant fields from the Web pages collected, and on the converters used to adapt formats to obtain a common format for information representation. We will also introduce the statistical analysis processor that explores the extracted data, in that format, to output a set of indicators. This work has been supported by FCT -Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the Project Scope: PTDC/LLT-LIN/29304/2017.We are also indebted to our students, André Salgueiro, Bruno Carvalho andFábio Araújo, for their valuable help in developing the statistical analysis and visualization components. We alsowishto thank Daria Bębeniecfor her carefulreading of the previous versions of the paper and her helpful comments and suggestion

Google Earth Engine Open-Source Code for Land Surface Temperature Estimation from the Landsat Series
Land Surface Temperature (LST) is increasingly important for various studies assessing land surface conditions, e.g., studies of urban climate, evapotranspiration, and vegetation stress. The Landsat series of satellites have the potential to provide LST estimates at a high spatial resolution, which is particularly appropriate for local or small-scale studies. Numerous studies have proposed LST retrieval algorithms for the Landsat series, and some datasets are available online. However, those datasets generally require the users to be able to handle large volumes of data. Google Earth Engine (GEE) is an online platform created to allow remote sensing users to easily perform big data analyses without increasing the demand for local computing resources. However, high spatial resolution LST datasets are currently not available in GEE. Here we provide a code repository that allows computing LSTs from Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8 within GEE. The code may be used freely by users for computing Landsat LST as part of any analysis within GEE
Impact of High Concentrations of Saharan Dust Aerosols on Infrared-Based Land Surface Temperature Products
An analysis of three operational satellite-based thermal-infrared land surface temperature (LST) products is presented for conditions of heavy dust aerosol loading. The LST products are compared against ERA5’s skin temperature (SKT) across the Sahara Desert and Sahel region, where high concentrations of dust aerosols are prevalent. Large anomalous differences are found between satellite LST and ERA5’s SKT during the periods of highest dust activity, and satellite–ERA5 differences are shown to be strongly related to dust aerosol optical depth (DuAOD) at 550 nm, indicating an underestimation of LST in conditions of heavy dust aerosol loading. In situ measurements from two ground stations in the Sahel region provide additional evidence of this underestimation, showing increased biases of satellite LST with DuAOD, and no significant dependence of ERA5’s SKT biases on dust aerosol concentrations. The impact of atmospheric water vapor content on LST and SKT is also examined, but dust aerosols are shown to be the primary driver of the inaccurate LSTs observed. Based on comparisons with in situ data, we estimate an aerosol-induced underestimation of LST of approximately 0.9 K for every 0.1 increase in DuAOD. Analysis of brightness temperatures (BTs) in the thermal infrared atmospheric window reveals that dust aerosols have the opposite effect on BT differences compared to water vapor, leading to an underestimation of atmospheric correction by the LST retrieval algorithms. This article highlights a shortcoming of current operational LST retrieval algorithms that must be addressed
