Differential-geometric methods for the lifting problem and linear systems on plane curves

Let XX be an integral projective variety of codimension two, degree dd and dimension rr and YY be its general hyperplane section. The problem of lifting generators of minimal degree σ\sigma from the homogeneous ideal of YY to the homogeneous ideal of XX is studied. A conjecture is given in terms of dd, rr and σ\sigma; it is proved in the cases r=1,2,3r=1,2,3. A description is given of linear systems on smooth plane curves whose dimension is almost maximal.Comment: 19 pages, AmS-TeX 2.1, report

Effects of Starch and Fat Concentrations in Starter Grain on Jersey Calf Performance

We investigated the nutritional needs of Jersey calves, focusing on meeting energy requirements by altering starch and fat concentrations in calf starters. Thirty-six female Jersey calves were grouped by BW and birth date and randomly assigned among 3 calf starters: 35% starch and 2% fat (HST), 20% starch and 2% fat (LST), and 35% starch and 4% fat (HST-F). The fat supplement for HST-F consisted of 20% coconut oil, 45% lard, 15% flaxseed oil, and 20% soybean oil. Calves were fed 4 L of colostrum at birth. All calves were fed the same milk replacer at 4.4 L/d during week one, 5.2 L/d during wk 2 to 7, and 2.6 L/d during wk 8 prior to weaning. Intake was measured daily and wither heights (WH) and BW were measured weekly. One week after weaning, fecal and feed samples were collected daily for 3 d. Using acid insoluble ash, apparent digestibility of dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and crude protein (CP) were determined. Neither starter (0.54, 0.52, and 0.56 kg/d, respectively for LST, HST, and HST-F) nor total DM intakes (1.05, 0.99, and 1.08 kg/d, respectively) differed among treatments. Average daily gains from birth through wk 10 were similar among groups (0.534, 0.586, and 0.550 kg/d, respectively), thus BW and WH were similar across weeks. Digestibilities of DM (66.0, 73.4, and 70.2%, respectively), NDF (50.2, 41.6, and 41.4%, respectively), and CP (65.1, 67.6, and 62.6%, respectively) were similar among treatments. Fecal scoring was evaluated on a 1-6 scale. For the first 4 weeks, there were no differences among treatments for average fecal scores and days with fecal scores of 1 to 4. Starch and fat concentrations in the starters appeared to not affect calf performance which can provide flexibility in formulation of starters based on ingredient costs.AJCC Research Foundation of the American Jersey Cattle AssociationHonors Committee for OSU's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental SciencesNo embargoAcademic Major: Animal Science

Projective varieties with many degenerate subvarieties

We study the problem of classifying the irreducible projective varieties XX of dimension n2n\ge 2 in PN\Bbb P^N which contain an algebraic family \Cal F of dimension h+1h+1 (h<nh<n) of subvarieties YY of dimension nhn-h, each one contained in a PNh1\Bbb P^{N-h-1}. We prove that one of the following happens: (i) there exists an integer rr, r<Nnr<N-n such that XX is contained in a variety VrV_r of dimension at most NrN-r containing a family of dimension h+1h+1 of subvarieties of dimension NhrN-h-r, each one contained in a linear space of dimension Nh1N-h-1; (ii) The degree of YY is bounded by a function of hh and NnN-n (in this case XX is called of isolated type). Successively we study some special cases; in particular we give a complete classification of surfaces in P5\Bbb P^5 containing a family of dimension 22 of curves of P3\Bbb P^3.Comment: 19 pages, AMS-TeX 2.

The Multi-door Court House (MDC) Scheme in Nigeria: A case study of the Lagos MDC

    Get PDF
In 2002 the Lagos Multidoor Courthouse (LMDC) opened its doors to the public. The MDC scheme is designed to provide alternative dispute resolution processes for the resolution of various disputes, as part of the public justice system. An empirical research into the effectiveness of the scheme in Lagos state was carried out in June 2012 and this report presents the findings of and recommendations from the research

Information as the fourth vital element and its influence on the culture of peoples

Almongst the various possible subjects that occurred to me within the fields of experimental science and the humanities, I decided to choose a question of great importance today –that of information and its influence on the historical evolution of the culture of peoples. Through this subject, I shall be able to explain, in general terms, my thoughts and opinions, which I would like to believe contain philosophical and historical traces. Inspired by contemporary philosophers, Dr. Martínez Fornes is of the idea that, as Alonso Quijano died unmarried and without issue, we are all children of Sancho Panza –positivistic, realistic, with our ___ the ground, somewhat pessimistic, without a trace of spirituality. I, if you will permit me, prefer to think that I have descended from Don Quijote´s niece; and that I have inherited some genes from an idealist, dreamer and, to some extent, and optimist. With this mixture of Don Quijote and Sancho, I shall now go on to give my talk on the subject “Information as the fourth vital element and its influence on the culture of peoples”

Modernising the Framework for Arbitration in Jamaica - Some Salient Points

Comments made on the text of a working draft law for a new arbitration regime in Jamaica. I argue in my comments that Jamaica should adapt the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration and use this text as the basis for its new arbitration law

Approaching Transhumanism: On How Human Beings Transform in the 21st Century

The following article is to introduce the reader into a cultural and intellectual movement whose aim is to identify the need for improvement in human life in the sphere of physicality as well as mentality with the aid of modern technologies – transhumanism. With the dramatic change in the perception of technology, transhumanist welcome the opportunity to improve cognitive skills, help to perpetuate human happiness, or increase longevity. Although the opponents of the transhumanist thought dismiss it as “the world’s most dangerous idea,” the adversaries advocate that the alternation of human form is both practical and reasonable. With the use of modern technology, enthusiasts of transhumanism try to prove that the human body needs to be re-invented in order to transcend the natural limitations. In my work I will try to tackle the problem of human body being currently subject to gradual transition from Homo Sapiens to Robo Sapiens, the process of ‘becoming’ a cyborg. By incorporating bodily augmentation, contemporary artists such as Stelarc or Neil Harbisson cast a light on the change of physical form, as well as the definition of being human. Evoking much controversy, transhumanism brings a completely new dimension to the understanding of the current human condition
