    Crisp Boundary Detection Using Pointwise Mutual Information

    Detecting boundaries between semantically meaningful objects in visual scenes is an important component of many vision algorithms. In this paper, we propose a novel method for detecting such boundaries based on a simple underlying principle: pixels belonging to the same object exhibit higher statistical dependencies than pixels belonging to different objects. We show how to derive an affinity measure based on this principle using pointwise mutual information, and we show that this measure is indeed a good predictor of whether or not two pixels reside on the same object. Using this affinity with spectral clustering, we can find object boundaries in the image – achieving state-of-the-art results on the BSDS500 dataset.     Studies have shown that ticks are susceptible to infection by entomopathogenic nematodes. These studies indicate different susceptibilities of ticks to infection by these fungi, depending on the tick species, development phase, entomopathogenic nematodes species and strains and the time the ticks are exposed to them. Usually this period ranges from 24 to 72 hours. The aim of this study was to evaluate the infection times in vitro of engorged Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus females by the entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema glaseri CCA strain, by analysis of the ticks' biological parameters. The results show that a 2-hour exposure time was sufficient for the engorged R. microplus females to be infected by S. glaseri CCA, but that a minimum exposure time of 24 hours was necessary to generate treatment efficacy above 90%.<br>Os carrapatos são susceptíveis à infecção por nematoides entomopatogênicos. Essa susceptibilidade diverge quanto às espécies de carrapato estudadas, à fase evolutiva, às espécies e estirpes dos nematoides e ao tempo ao qual os carrapatos ficam expostos a estes. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os tempos de infecção in vitro de fêmeas ingurgitadas de Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus pelo nematoide entomopatogênico Steinernema glaseri estirpe CCA, pela análise dos parâmetros biológicos do carrapato. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que um período de duas horas de exposição foi suficiente para que fêmeas ingurgitadas de R. microplus fossem infectadas por S. glaseri CCA e que um período de exposição mínimo de 24h foi necessário para que houvesse infecção de fêmeas ingurgitadas de R. microplus por S. glaseri estirpe CCA, capaz de gerar, in vitro, eficácia no tratamento superior a 90%

    Standardization of Pathways to Adulthood? An Analysis of Dutch Cohorts Born Between 1850 and 1900

    This article examines pathways to adulthood among Dutch cohorts born in the second half of the nineteenth century. Although largely overlooked by previous studies, theory suggests that life courses of young adults born during this period were already influenced by a process of standardization, in the sense that their life courses became more similar over time. Using data from a Dutch registry-based sample, we examine household trajectories: that is, sequences of living arrangements of young adults aged 15–40. Our study shows that for successive cohorts, household trajectories became more similar. We identified six types of trajectories: early death, life-cycle service, early family formation, late family formation, singlehood, and childless but with partner. Over time, early family formation gradually became the “standard” trajectory to adulthood. However, late family formation and singlehood, common pathways within the preindustrial western European marriage pattern, remained widespread among cohorts born in the late nineteenth century. Laboring class youths, farmers’ daughters, young people of mixed religious background, and urban-born youngsters were the nineteenth century forerunners of a standard pathway to adulthood

    The impaired radiologist

    The concept of the "impaired physician" is an oxymoron. Physicians are by definition bearers of health, which can lead to overlooking the possibility of them contracting an illness that reduces their diagnostic and therapeutic abilities, with a consequent danger to their patients' health. The clinical reasons for which a radiologist may constitute a danger to patients can be divided into two categories: infectious blood-borne diseases, which can be transmitted to the patient during interventional radiology procedures; and neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including alcohol and drug abuse, which temporarily or permanently impair the faculty of judgement. All radiologists have a duty to periodically verify their own state of health and seek help as soon as possible when they fear it may be a danger. This individual responsibility towards one's own patients is flanked by the health and safety requirements provided by European regulations for radiologists who are employers, directors or department heads. The occupational health physician plays a key role in identifying and managing the impaired radiologist
