    Antioxidanzien in der PrÀvention von Herz-Kreislauf-Krankheiten und Krebs: Epidemiologische Beweislage

    Basierend auf den Ausführungen des vorangehenden Artikels wurde die Hypothese formuliert, dass Antioxidanzien in der PrĂ€vention von Krebs und kardiovaskulĂ€ren Krankheiten (KHK) eine Rolle spielen könnten. Diese Hypothese wurde dann in Fallkontroll-, Kohorten- und Interventionsstudien (Kasten 1) am Menschen überprüft. In der Folge wird die epidemiologische Beweislage zu den Vitaminen C und E und den Karotinoiden beziehungsweise Betakarotin hinsichtlich der primĂ€ren PrĂ€vention von kardiovaskulĂ€ren Krankheiten und Krebs erörtert. Diese Ausführungen stützen sich im Wesentlichen auf die DRI Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Carotenoids (2000, [2]), den WCRF/AICR Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective (2007, [3]) sowie auf neuere Resultate von Kohortenstudien. In diesem Beitrag werden nur die Resultate von Fallkontroll- und Kohortenstudien prĂ€sentiert. Ergebnisse von Interventionsstudien folgen im nĂ€chsten Beitrag (s. Seite 21ff). Es sprengt allerdings den Rahmen dieser Arbeit, eine vollstĂ€ndige Übersicht zu den vorhandenen Studien zu geben

    Associations between fruit and vegetable consumption and psychological distress: results from a population-based study.

    BACKGROUND: Several studies observed associations of various aspects of diet with mental health, but little is known about the relationship between following the 5-a-day recommendation for fruit and vegetables consumption and mental health. Thus, we examined the associations of the Swiss daily recommended fruit and vegetable intake with psychological distress. METHODS: Data from 20,220 individuals aged 15+ years from the 2012 Swiss Health Survey were analyzed. The recommended portions of fruit and vegetables per day were defined as 5-a-day (at least 2 portions of fruit and 3 of vegetables). The outcome was perceived psychological distress over the previous 4 weeks (measured by the 5-item mental health index [MHI-5]). High distress (MHI-5 score ≀ 52), moderate distress (MHI-5 > 52 and ≀ 72) and low distress (MHI-5 > 72 and ≀ 100) were differentiated and multinomial logistic regression analyses adjusted for known confounding factors were performed. RESULTS: The 5-a-day recommendation was met by 11.6 % of the participants with low distress, 9.3 % of those with moderate distress, and 6.2 % of those with high distress. Consumers fulfilling the 5-a-day recommendation had lower odds of being highly or moderately distressed than individuals consuming less fruit and vegetables (moderate vs. low distress: OR = 0.82, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.69-0.97; high vs. low distress: OR = 0.55, 95 % CI 0.41-0.75). CONCLUSIONS: Daily intake of 5 servings of fruit and vegetable was associated with lower psychological distress. Longitudinal studies are needed to further determine the causal nature of this relationship

    Loneliness is adversely associated with physical and mental health and lifestyle factors: Results from a Swiss national survey.

    Loneliness is a common, emotionally distressing experience and is associated with adverse physical and mental health and an unhealthy lifestyle. Nevertheless, little is known about the prevalence of loneliness in different age groups in Switzerland. Furthermore, the existing evidence about age and gender as potential effect modifiers of the associations between loneliness, physical and mental health and lifestyle characteristics warrants further investigation. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of loneliness among adults in Switzerland and to assess the associations of loneliness with several physical and mental health and behavioral factors, as well as to assess the modifying effect of sex and age. Data from 20,007 participants of the cross-sectional population-based Swiss Health Survey 2012 (SHS) were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were used to assess associations of loneliness with physical and mental health or lifestyle characteristics (e.g. diabetes, depression, physical activity). Wald tests were used to test for interactions. Loneliness was distributed in a slight U-shaped form from 15 to 75+ year olds, with 64.1% of participants who had never felt lonely. Lonely individuals were more often affected by physical and mental health problems, such as self-reported chronic diseases (Odds ratio [OR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.30-1.54), high cholesterol levels (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.18-1.45), diabetes (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.16-1.67), moderate and high psychological distress (OR 3.74, 95% CI 3.37-4.16), depression (OR 2.78, 95% CI 2.22-3.48) and impaired self-perceived health (OR 1.94, 95% CI 1.74-2.16). Loneliness was significantly associated with most lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking; OR 1.13, 95% 1.05-1.23). Age, but not sex, moderated loneliness' association with several variables. Loneliness is associated with poorer physical and mental health and unhealthy lifestyle, modified by age, but not by sex. Our findings illustrate the importance of considering loneliness for physical and mental health and lifestyle factors, not only in older and younger, but also in middle-aged adults. Longitudinal studies are needed in Switzerland to elucidate the causal relationships of these associations

    Adherence to dietary recommendations is not associated with depression in two Swiss population-based samples.

    Little is known about adherence to dietary recommendations and depression. Furthermore, dietary habits may differ among depression subtypes, which has not been evaluated previously. Two population-based Swiss studies, including 3620 individuals from PsyCoLaus and 11,032 individuals from the Swiss Health Survey 2012 (SHS), were used to examine the associations between adherence to common dietary guidelines and odds of depressive disorders. In both studies, depression was assessed by validated instruments. Adherence to dietary recommendations were assessed by a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (PsyCoLaus) and by single item questions (SHS). Logistic regression analyses were used to assess the association of adhering to dietary recommendations with depression. For the analyses of diet with depression subtypes maximum-likelihood multinomial (polytomous) logistic regression analyses were conducted. No association of adherence to dietary recommendations with current major depressive disorder (MDD) was observed in any of the two study populations except for adherence to fish consumption, which was positively associated with MDD in the SHS. For depression subtypes, statistically significantly positive associations of vegetable consumption and adherence to the 5-a-day recommendation with current unspecified and current melancholic MDD were found. In conclusion, we don't see consistent associations between adherence to dietary recommendations and MDD or subtypes of depression

    Predicting Gypsy Moth Population Size in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park using a Satellite Disturbance Index

    The pattern of gypsy moth defoliation in the Apostle Islands suggests that moths arrived first to the most isolated islands, not those that are nearest the mainland or the most visited by tourists. Gypsy moths are primarily wind-dispersed, so at least some of the moths may have been blown across Lake Superior. The Porcupine Mountains, about 55 km away, are a potential source for these moths. We used a satellite image-based disturbance index to map the extent of defoliation in and around Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Using these data and moth trap data provided by the Slow the Spread program, we estimated the moth population to include 310 million male moths. While this does not prove definitively that moths were blown across the lake, it does suggest that the Porcupine Mountains are a likely and convenient source for windborne invading moths.     In a 25-year follow-up study of 44 864 men with measured serum cholesterol levels, the testicular cancer hazard ratios for the serum cholesterol categories 5.7–6.9 and â©Ÿ7.0 mmol l−1 vs the reference category (<5.7 mmol l−1) were 1.3 and 4.5, respectively; P-value for trend=0.005. This highly significant association suggests that high-serum cholesterol is a risk factor for testicular cancer

    The risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) is related to lifestyle (e.g. diet, physical activity and smoking) as well as to genetic factors. This study aimed at evaluating the association between CVD risk factors and DNA damage levels in children and adolescents. Anthropometry, diet and serum CVD risk factors were evaluated by standard procedures. DNA damage levels were accessed by the comet assay (Single cell gel electrophoresis; SCGE) and cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (CBMN) assays in leukocytes. A total of 34 children and adolescents selected from a population sample were divided into three groups according to their level of CVD risk. Moderate and high CVD risk subjects showed significantly higher body fat and serum CVD risk markers than low risk subjects (PO risco de desenvolver doença cardiovascular (DCV) estĂĄ relacionado ao estilo de vida (por exemplo, dieta, atividade fĂ­sica e tabagismo), bem como a fatores genĂ©ticos. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a associação entre fatores de risco cardiovascular e os nĂ­veis de danos ao DNA em crianças e adolescentes. Antropometria, dieta e fatores de risco para DCV foram avaliados atravĂ©s de procedimentos padrĂŁo. NĂ­veis de danos no DNA foram avaliados atravĂ©s do ensaio cometa (eletroforese de cĂ©lula Ășnica; EC) e do teste de micronĂșcleos em leucĂłcitos. Um total de 34 crianças e adolescentes, selecionados a partir de uma amostra populacional, foram divididos em trĂȘs grupos, de acordo com seu nĂ­vel de risco de DCV. IndivĂ­duos com nĂ­veis moderado e alto risco para DCV apresentaram de forma significativa maiores nĂ­veis de gordura corporal e de marcadores sĂ©ricos de risco cardiovascular que indivĂ­duos de baixo risco (P <0,05). IndivĂ­duos de alto risco tambĂ©m mostraram um aumento significativo de danos ao DNA, de acordo com o EC, mas nĂŁo de acordo com o teste de micronĂșcleos, do que indivĂ­duos de risco baixo e moderado. A vitamina C consumida foi inversamente correlacionada com os danos ao DNA avaliados pelo EC, e o nĂșmero de micronĂșcleos foi inversamente correlacionado com a ingestĂŁo de ĂĄcido fĂłlico. Os resultados obtidos indicam um aumento de danos no DNA que pode ser consequente do estresse oxidativo em indivĂ­duos jovens com fatores de risco para DCV, indicando que o nĂ­vel de danos no DNA pode auxiliar na avaliação do risco de DCV

    Ten years after the Dutch public health campaign on folic acid: the continuing challenge

    BACKGROUND: Folic acid use in the periconceptional period reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). However, applying this knowledge in daily practice is not an easy task. We report here the current level of folic acid use in the Netherlands and discuss the figures within the framework of a national governmental campaign held in 1995 promoting the use of folic acid and the professional interventions undertaken since then. METHODS: We carried out six studies in the northern Netherlands during 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005, respectively. The same methodology in the same health professionals' practices was followed in all studies. Pregnant women attending their first or second antenatal visit were asked to fill in a questionnaire aimed at assessing their awareness and use of folic acid. RESULTS: In 2005, most of the pregnant women used folic acid "at some time in their pregnancy", and 51% used it for the entire advised period. Prior knowledge on the protective affect of folic acid and on the period of use was strongly related to the level of education. The use of folic acid in a previous pregnancy [odds ratio (OR) 3.9, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.6-9.9], the use of an oral contraceptive (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.1-4.1) and parity (OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.01-0.5) significantly predicted the current correct use. The most recent figures revealed that there is still a large gap between more highly and less educated women in terms of taking folic acid in the advised period: 63 versus 31%, respectively. DISCUSSION: The aim of the Dutch Ministry of Health is to have 70% of Dutch women wanting to become pregnant use folic acid supplements in the advised period by 2010. While this level has almost been reached among more highly educated women (63%), it will take a great deal more effort, money and creativity to achieve the necessary increase from the current level of 31% among women with a lower educational background

    Modulation of folic acid bioaccessibility by encapsulation in pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles

    [EN] A study on the controlled release of folic acid (FA) from pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles (MSP) is reported. The MCM-41 support was synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as hydrolytic inorganic precursor and the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as porogen species. Calcination of the mesostructured phase resulted in the starting solid. This solid was loaded with FA to obtain the initial support S0. Moreover, this FA-loaded material was further functionalized with 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane (N3) in order to obtain the gated polyamine-functionalised material S1. Solids S0 and S1 were characterized using standard solid state procedures. It was found that the functionalization process and the inclusion of FA on the pores did not modify the mesoporous structure of the starting material. FA delivery studies in water with solids S0 and S1 were carried out in water at pH 2 and 7.5. S0 was not able to completely inhibit FA delivery at acidic pH yet a rapid FA release at neutral pH was observed in few minutes. In contrast, S1 was tightly capped at pH 2 and displayed a sustained delivery of FA when the pH was switched to 7.5. In the second part of the study, FA loading and functionalization of S1-like supports was optimized. In particular, solids loaded with FA in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and capped with N3 in acetate buffer at pH 2 exhibited a delivery capacity up to 95 &#956;g FA/mg solid. Finally, FA release from the selected optimized supports was studied following an in vitro digestion procedure.
