A Patient\u27s Guide to Smart Research

Patients may not know where to look when researching a health issue. This may lead them to resources that are not supported by research and may become an issue for their own health. Some websites may be filled with medical jargon, which can potentially exacerbate anxiety about a particular condition or cause concern for unrelated health issues. A handout compiling a list of resources would be helpful to providers and beneficial to patients.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/fmclerk/1416/thumbnail.jp

English in South Asia and Pedagogical Implications

English at present maintains a significant role as a second or foreign language in the region of South Asia as well as globally. In a discussion of this topic, it is important to explore a brief history of the expansion of English and its origins in South Asia. It is also essential to provide a background of South Asian English and its unique linguistic characteristics as well as its use in different contexts of South Asia. The perspectives of linguists and educators who are native to the region of South Asia should be included as much as possible in this research. The most crucial element in this discussion is the various implications of the role of English in South Asia on English language pedagogical practices. The numerous options for how to teach the language and the diverse contexts in which the language may be used have a profound effect on the English language educational approach. These implications lead to examining and suggesting the seemingly most relevant and effective approaches to English language instruction in South Asia. The main question in response to these considerations is what variety of English or instructional model should be taught or used in a South Asian classroom. Based on the diverse cultural context of South Asia and the global state of our world, this research endorses a polymodel of English pedagogy that incorporates the use of an established variety of English primarily for instruction while also exposing students to many more existing varieties that they may encounter as well as the cultures that use them

Ethylene-independent promotion of photomorphogenesis in the dark by cytokinin requires COP1 and the CDD complex

The transition of skotomorphogenesis to photomorphogenesis is induced by the perception of light, and is characterized by the inhibition of hypocotyl elongation and opening of cotyledons. Although it is known that the plant hormone cytokinin inhibits hypocotyl elongation in dark-grown Arabidopsis plants when applied in high concentrations, it is unclear to what extent this response is the result of cytokinin alone or cytokinin-induced ethylene production. Here, we show that cytokinin-induced inhibition of hypocotyl elongation is largely independent of ethylene and suggest a close connection between the cytokinin two-component system and the light-signaling networks. We show that this cytokinin signal is mainly mediated through the cytokinin receptor ARABIDOPSIS HISTIDINE KINASE3 and the ARABIDOPSIS RESPONSE REGULATOR1 in combination with ARR12. Interestingly, mutation of CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPOGENIC1 (COP1), DE-ETIOLATED1, and CYTOKININ INSENSITIVE4/COP10 renders plants insensitive to cytokinin, and these factors are indispensable for the transcriptional response during cytokinin-induced de-etiolation, indicating that a functional light-signaling pathway is essential for this cytokinin response. In addition, the effect of cytokinin on hypocotyl elongation is strongly dependent on the light conditions, with higher light intensities causing a switch in the response to cytokinin from an inhibitor to a promoter of hypocotyl elongation

Sphinx: A Secure Architecture Based on Binary Code Diversification and Execution Obfuscation

Sphinx, a hardware-software co-design architecture for binary code and runtime obfuscation. The Sphinx architecture uses binary code diversification and self-reconfigurable processing elements to maintain application functionality while obfuscating the binary code and architecture states to attackers. This approach dramatically reduces an attacker's ability to exploit information gained from one deployment to attack another deployment. Our results show that the Sphinx is able to decouple the program's execution time, power and memory and I/O activities from its functionality. It is also practical in the sense that the system (both software and hardware) overheads are minimal.Comment: Boston Area Architecture 2018 Workshop (BARC18
