Drugs such as methylphenidate, amphetamine compounds and modafinil have been trialed and used in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sleep conditions, cocaine dependence and as an adjunct to antidepressants for depression. All these drugs, like stimulant drugs abuse, increase extracellular dopamine in the brain. This effect is associated with reinforcing as well as therapeutic effects. Methylphenidate and modafinil treatment of ADHD are associated with a reduced risk for later substance abuse among ADHD patients. There is evidence of the beneficial effects of the use of modafinil in cocaine dependence, altough there isn't conclusive evidence for the stimulants' efficacy in treatment of the stimulants' dependence. At this time, the physiopathology of drug abuse and dependence is unknown, but it's known that the very critical point is that the reinforcing effects are associated with rapid changes in dopamine increases, whereas the therapeutic effects are associated with slowly and smoothly rising dopamine levels, such as are achieved with low doses and oral administration. Due to this, it's necessary to study the neurobiological bases on which stimulants drugs are related, and their clinical use in dependence treatment
Corporate boards and the performance of Asian firms: A meta-analysis
The prevalence of ownership concentration in Asian firms presents a challenge to the influential agency theory-based understanding of the role of corporate boards. In this paper we develop and test hypotheses about board attributes and firm performance that reflect Asian institutional conditions. We present the first meta-analysis of the relationship between board attributes and performance of Asian firms using a varied set of meta-analytical techniques on a database of 86 studies covering nine Asian countries. First, we find that board structure and composition preferences are influenced by the identity of the concentrated owner. Second, consistent with US data, we find very limited evidence of a direct relationship between board attributes and firm financial performance in the Asian context. Third, we find that the relationship between board structure and composition and firm performance is mediated by the revealed strategic preferences of Asian firms specifically by the level of R&D investment
Changing perspectives on the internationalization of R&D and innovation by multinational enterprises: a review of the literature
Internationalization of R&D and innovation by Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) has undergone a gradual and comprehensive change in perspective over the past 50 years. From sporadic works in the late 1950s and in the 1960s, it became a systematically analysed topic in the 1970s, starting with pioneering reports and âfoundation textsâ. Our review unfolds the theoretical and empirical evolution of the literature from dyadic interpretations of centralization versus decentralization of R&D by MNEs to more comprehensive frameworks, wherein established MNEs from Advanced Economies still play a pivotal role, but new players and places also emerge in the global generation and diffusion of knowledge. Hence views of R&D internationalization increasingly rely on concepts, ideas and methods from IB and other related disciplines such as industrial organization, international economics and economic geography. Two main findings are highlighted. First, scholarly research pays an increasing attention to the network-like characteristics of international R&D activities. Second, different streams of literature have emphasized the role of location- specific factors in R&D internationalization. The increasing emphasis on these aspects has created new research opportunities in some key areas, including inter alia: cross-border knowledge sourcing strategies, changes in the geography of R&D and innovation, and the international fragmentation of production and R&D activities
Obsolescence management for long-life contracts: State of the art and future trends
This paper provides a comprehensive literature review on the problem of
obsolescence in âsustainment-dominated systemsâ that require support for many
decades. Research on this topic continues to grow as a result of the high impact
of obsolescence on the in-service phase of long-term projects. Research on
obsolescence also seeks to understand how it can be managed, mitigated and
resolved. The paper aims to clarify and classify the different activities that
may be included in an obsolescence management planning, taking into account not
only electronic components but also other aspects of the system such as
mechanical components, software, materials, skills and tooling. The literature
review shows that although there are many commercial tools available that
support the obsolescence management during the in-service phase of the life
cycle of a system, little research has been done to forecast the costs incu
Implementing a brief evidence-based HIV intervention: a mixed methods examination of compliance fidelity
Dissemination of HIV behavioral prevention programs has increased the reach of evidence-based interventions, but there is a paucity of data on implementation and diffusion. The present mixed methods study focused on RESPECT, a brief counseling and testing intervention, examining compliance fidelity and the extent to which Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) policies and training have diffused to practice settings. Using client exit surveys (Nâ=â830) and counselor interviews (Nâ=â64), we examined implementation in 26 community-based agencies (CBOs) and public health departments (DPHs) in the USA. Multivariate analyses showed that at-risk clients, ethnic minority clients, and those who were primarily seeking services other than HIV/STI testing, were more likely to receive the program with fidelity. Counselor data suggested that multiple factors (e.g., client characteristics, agency structure) impact program adaptations. RESPECT is being delivered with good fidelity and reaching at-risk clients. The data provide support for CDC diffusion efforts. Future studies should continue to examine compliance fidelity and program sustainability
