(E)-2-(4-Arylbut-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)chromones as synthons for the synthesis of xanthone-1,2,3-triazole dyads
Xanthone-1,2,3-triazole dyads have been synthesized by two different approaches, both starting from novel (E)-2-(4-arylbut-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)chromones, prepared through a base-catalyzed aldol reaction of 2-methylchromone and arylpropargyl aldehydes. In the first method, the xanthone moiety is built by Diels-Alder reaction of the referred unsaturated chromones with N-methylmaleimide under microwave irradiation, followed by oxidation of the obtained adducts with DDQ, whereas the 1,2,3-triazole ring results from the cycloaddition reaction of the acetylene moiety with sodium azide. The second strategy first involves the cycloaddition reaction with sodium azide to provide the 1,2,3-triazole ring, followed by methylation of the triazole NH group prior to Diels-Alder reaction with N-methylmaleimide. The last step in this synthesis of novel xanthone-1,2,3-triazole dyads entails oxidation of the cycloadducts with DDQ
Preliminary Limits on the WIMP-Nucleon Cross Section from the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS)
We are conducting an experiment to search for WIMPs, or weakly-interacting
massive particles, in the galactic halo using terrestrial detectors. This
generic class of hypothetical particles, whose properties are similar to those
predicted by extensions of the standard model of particle physics, could
comprise the cold component of non-baryonic dark matter. We describe our
experiment, which is based on cooled germanium and silicon detectors in a
shielded low-background cryostat. The detectors achieve a high degree of
background rejection through the simultaneous measurement of the energy in
phonons and ionization. Using exposures on the order of one kilogram-day from
initial runs of our experiment, we have achieved (preliminary) upper limits on
the WIMP-nucleon cross section that are comparable to much longer runs of other
experiments.Comment: 5 LaTex pages, 5 eps figs, epsf.sty, espcrc2dsa2.sty. Proceedings of

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in early neonatal period
BACKGROUND: The clinical characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis respiratory tract infections in Japanese neonates were investigated. METHODS: Clinical, laboratory and microbiological characteristics of five infants with pneumonia due to C. trachomatis in early neonatal period were analyzed. RESULTS: Only C. trachomatis was identified in 4 infants. Both C. trachomatis and cytomegalovirus was identified in one. Wheezing, tachypnea and cyanosis were common in infants. Mothers of five infants had negative chlamydial EIAs at 20 weeks of gestation. CONCLUSIONS: We identified five cases of C. trachomatis respiratory tract infections in early neonatal period with the possibility of intrauterine infection. Targeted screening, early diagnosis, and effective treatment of perinatal and neonatal chlamydial infections seems to be necessar
