Potentials of Treculia Africana Decne – An endangered species of Southern Nigeria

    Get PDF
Treculia africana Decne is an important multipurpose indigenous tree species in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. The species is best known for the edible seeds and oil it produces. In addition, it has numerous environmental, socio-economic, traditional and industrial uses. However, the species is declining at an alarming rate and thus, needs priority conservation. This decline is due to a number of factors of which are high rate of deforestation, increased population pressure, non-improvement and non-cultivation of the species. Urgent conservation measures are required to save the species. The conservation strategies could include; mass propagation and plantation establishment of the species, development of early-maturing and dwarf varieties as well as introduction of ‘Ukwa’ trade fair

Time Dilation Induced by Object Motion is Based on Spatiotopic but not Retinotopic Positions

Time perception of visual events depends on the visual attributes of the scene. Previous studies reported that motion of object can induce an illusion of lengthened time. In the present study, we asked the question whether such time dilation effect depends on the actual physical motion of the object (spatiotopic coordinate), or its relative motion with respect to the retina (retinotopic coordinate). Observers were presented with a moving stimulus and a static reference stimulus in separate intervals, and judged which interval they perceived as having a longer duration, under conditions with eye fixation (Experiment 1) and with eye movement at same velocity as the moving stimulus (Experiment 2). The data indicated that the perceived duration was longer under object motion, and depended on the actual movement of the object rather than relative retinal motion. These results are in support with the notion that the brain possesses a spatiotopic representation regarding the real world positions of objects in which the perception of time is associated with

Testing the Effects of Adaptive Learning Courseware on Student Performance: An Experimental Approach

    Get PDF
An increasing number of college and university courses are being offered in an online format. Even for courses offered face-to-face, instructors are increasingly turning toward use of online platforms to help with student learning, especially for courses with high enrollment. This study tests the efficacy of adaptive learning platforms in a sample of undergraduate students in a large urban university, using an experimental design that compares the learning outcomes of students in classrooms that used an adaptive learning tool to those who did not. The results indicate that better performing students, particularly female students, benefit the most from using adaptive learning tools

Proximate and Mineral Elements Composition of Three Forest Fruits Sold in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

This study aimed to assess the nutritional and trace elements composition of selected forest fruits sold for human consumption in Port Harcourt. Fruit contamination by heavy metals is an issue of global concern. Nondegradable elements bioaccumulations in tissues and organs have deleterious effects in man. Three (3) Agroforestry fruits species; (Spondias cytherea L. (Anacardiaceae), Syzygium malaccense (L.) Merr. & L. M. Perry Myrtaceae and Cola pachycarpa K. Schum. Malvaceae) were purposefully selected and sourced from three strategically located markets namely; Oil mill, Choba and D/line fruit markets. The fruit species were procured and washed with distilled water and the edible parts extracted, chopped and sun dried properly. The nutritional composition was analyzed using 18th edition of the Association of Official Analytical Chemist while trace metals were analysed using PIXE Accelerator. Spondias cytherea yielded high percentage of crude Protein (8.373±0.1) and Fibre content (11.73±0.03), while Syzygium malaccense was rich in Fat (7.17±0.02) and Ash (4.17±0.04). Moisture content was highest in Cola parchycarpa (12.63±0.05). PIXE Accelerator analysis revealed that the fruits contain high concentration of trace metals; S. malaccense contained Mg (1170±237.0ppm), Si (60.02±68.95ppm), Al (14.89±7.71ppm), Fe (10. 60±4.11ppm), Rb (3.20±0.00ppm) and Ti (1.82±0.00ppm). C. parchycarpa had Zn (6.22±11.80ppm), Cr (1.60±0.75 ppm), Mn (0. 71±0.87ppm) and Cu (0.38±0.33ppm). Ni (0.16 ppm) was found only in S. cytherea fruit. The forest fruits are rich in nutrients vital for healthy growth but the level of heavy metals (Mg, Al. Cr, Fe and Zn) in each of the fruits were above WHO/FAO permissible limit, therefore excessive consumption on a daily/weekly routine should be avoided. Background: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is caused by the BCR – ABL tyrosine kinase , the product of the Philadelphia chromosome. Standart the therapy in patients cml historically is Hydroxyurea. Hydroxyurea is chemotherapy given in patients to control hematology. Currently there are treatnent for CML, that is targeted theraphy. Now the recommendation for the first line CML theraphy is Nilotinib because showed the high response with low risk than hydroxyurea. This research aims to tell the difference of Leukocytes , Hb and Platelets in patients CML get treatment Hydroxyurea and Nilotinib in RSUD Dr. Moewardi. Methods: The research by design cohort retrospective , in patients cml who are therapy Hydroxyurea and Nilotinib the period 2015 - 2016 .Data taken from the record medical obtained in the record medical RSUD Dr Moewardi in june - july 2017 .The data collected covering characteristic subject ( age , sex ) , and the leukocytes , hemoglobin and platelets before and after get therapy Hydroxyurea and Nilotinib .Data analyzed use test t to data normally distributed or test Mann Whitney for data not normally distributed to compare data before and after therapy . And analysis chi square to know relations between two variable through the spss 20 for windows. Results: Sample data 80 medical record data . Value levels of Hb between patients with nilotinib therapy and therapeutic hydroxyurea there is no significant difference ( p = 0,156 ) , Levels of leukocytes there are significant differences ( p = 0.010 ) , levels of platelets there are no significant differences ( p = 0,312 ). Conclusions: There is a significant difference between the patients CML get therapy hydroxyurea and nilotinib. Keywords: CML, Hydroxyurea, Nilotinib, Leukocytes, Haemoglobin, Platele

This study was carried out to identify the effectiveness of the literature lesson plans through E-picture book reading designed on the creativity elements; originality, elaboration and fluency. They were 42 children year 4-to-5-year old children from two private preschools in the district of Petaling Jaya, Selangor. This experimental research applied the Wallis Model of Creativity (1926) as the research framework and the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) as the instrument of study. Data was analyzed by using Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS). Findings indicated that there was significant difference between pre-test and post-test that carried out among the children in originality, elaboration and fluency elements of creativity with the total moderate effect size at .61. Chinese female children score higher than Malay male children in creativity. In other words, literature lesson plan through E-picture book reading is effective to inculcate the creativity among the children at the young age. Thus, the preschools and the educators should review their educational system to cultivate the creativity elements since creativity is an important criterion to produce dedicated leaders in the future
