Pluto's global surface composition through pixel-by-pixel Hapke modeling of New Horizons Ralph/LEISA data
On July 14th 2015, NASA's New Horizons mission gave us an unprecedented
detailed view of the Pluto system. The complex compositional diversity of
Pluto's encounter hemisphere was revealed by the Ralph/LEISA infrared
spectrometer on board of New Horizons. We present compositional maps of Pluto
defining the spatial distribution of the abundance and textural properties of
the volatiles methane and nitrogen ices and non-volatiles water ice and tholin.
These results are obtained by applying a pixel-by-pixel Hapke radiative
transfer model to the LEISA scans. Our analysis focuses mainly on the large
scale latitudinal variations of methane and nitrogen ices and aims at setting
observational constraints to volatile transport models. Specifically, we find
three latitudinal bands: the first, enriched in methane, extends from the pole
to 55deg N, the second dominated by nitrogen, continues south to 35deg N, and
the third, composed again mainly of methane, reaches 20deg N. We demonstrate
that the distribution of volatiles across these surface units can be explained
by differences in insolation over the past few decades. The latitudinal pattern
is broken by Sputnik Planitia, a large reservoir of volatiles, with nitrogen
playing the most important role. The physical properties of methane and
nitrogen in this region are suggestive of the presence of a cold trap or
possible volatile stratification. Furthermore our modeling results point to a
possible sublimation transport of nitrogen from the northwest edge of Sputnik

Transformational Sexualities: Motivations of women who pay for sexual services
Previous research on client motivations to purchase sexual services in the UK has predominantly focused on the experiences of men. Women who buy sex have largely been overlooked, as it is commonly assumed that women provide, rather than purchase sexual services. In addressing this empirical absence, this article examines data gained from 50 interviews with women clients and sex workers. It examines the reasons why women decide to purchase sexual services in the UK. We argue that the increasing importance of contemporary capitalism and consumerism has shaped women’s engagement in the sex industry as clients. We show how women’s sexual agency and assertiveness as clients, inverts the female sex worker/male client binary assumed to characterize commercial sex and illustrates the overlap and convergence of male and female sexuality. Our research thus contributes to an understanding of female sexuality more broadly, as exemplifying the hallmarks of ‘transformational sexualities’ in cosmopolitanism (Plummer, 2015)
Comparison of the clinical and economic outcomes between open and minimally invasive appendectomy and colectomy: evidence from a large commercial payer database
Background: Appendectomy and colectomy are commonly performed surgical procedures. Despite evidence demonstrating advantages with the minimally invasive surgical (MIS) approach, open procedures occur with greater prevalence. Therefore, there is still controversy as to whether the MIS approach is safer or more cost effective. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using a large commercial payer database. The data included information on 7,532 appendectomies and 2,745 colectomies. Data on the distribution of patient demographic and comorbidity characteristics associated with the MIS and open approaches were reviewed. The corresponding complication rates and expenditures were analyzed. Summary statistics were compared using chi-square tests, and generalized linear models were constructed to estimate expenditures while controlling for patient characteristics. Results: The patients undergoing MIS and open colectomy showed no significant variations in age distribution or marginal age differences for appendectomy. Significantly more patients experienced an infection postoperatively, and procedure-specific complications were more common in the open group for both procedures (PÂ <Â 0.05). The postsurgical hospital stay was longer for the patients treated using the open techniques, differing an average of half a day for appendectomies and significantly more (4Â days) for colectomy (PÂ <Â 0.05). Readmission rates differed little between the two approaches. Procedures performed through an MIS approach were associated with lower expenditures than for the open technique, with differences ranging from 15,200 for colectomy patients (PÂ < 0.05). Conclusions: Minimally invasive appendectomy and colectomy were associated with lower infection rates, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and lower expenditures than open surgery
Improved Measurement of the Positive Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment
A new measurement of the positive muon's anomalous magnetic moment has been
made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron using the direct
injection of polarized muons into the superferric storage ring. The angular
frequency difference omega_{a} between the angular spin precession frequency
omega_{s} and the angular orbital frequency omega_{c} is measured as well as
the free proton NMR frequency omega_{p}. These determine
R = omega_{a} / omega_{p} = 3.707~201(19) times 10^{-3}. With mu_{mu} /
mu_{p} = 3.183~345~39(10) this gives a_{mu^+} = 11~659~191(59) times 10^{-10}
(pm 5 ppm), in good agreement with the previous CERN and BNL measurements for

Low-Multiplicity Burst Search At The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Results are reported from a search for low-multiplicity neutrino bursts in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Such bursts could indicate the detection of a nearby core-collapse supernova explosion. The data were taken from Phase I (1999 November-2001 May), when the detector was filled with heavy water, and Phase II (2001 July-2003 August), when NaCl was added to the target. The search was a blind analysis in which the potential backgrounds were estimated and analysis cuts were developed to eliminate such backgrounds with 90% confidence before the data were examined. The search maintained a greater than 50% detection probability for standard supernovae occurring at a distance of up to 60 kpc for Phase I and up to 70 kpc for Phase II.
