Electrical resistivity, electronic heat capacity, and electronic structure of Gd5Ge4

    Get PDF
Temperature and dc magnetic-field dependencies of the electrical resistivity (4.3–300 K, 0–40 kOe) and heat capacity (3.5–14 K, 0–100 kOe) of polycrystalline Gd5Ge4 have been measured. The electrical resistivity of Gd5Ge4 shows a transition between the low-temperature metallic and high-temperature insulatorlike states at ∼130 K. In the low-temperature metallic state both the resistivity and electronic heat capacity of Gd5Ge4 indicate a possible presence of a narrow conduction band. Both low- and high-temperature behaviors of the electrical resistivity of Gd5Ge4 correlate with the crystallographic and magnetic phase transitions induced by temperature and/or magnetic field. Several models, which can describe the unusual behavior of the electrical resistance of Gd5Ge4 above 130 K, are discussed. Preliminary tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital calculations show that Gd5Ge4 behaves as a metal in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state, and as a Mott-Hubbard β€œsemiconductor” in the high-temperature magnetically disordered state

Ξ²-Glucans have beneficial health effects due to their immune modulatory properties. Oral administration of Ξ²-glucans affects tumour growth, microbial infection, sepsis, and wound healing. We hypothesized that pre-treatment with orally delivered soluble and particulate Ξ²-glucans could ameliorate the development of aggravate dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced intestinal inflammation. To study this, mice were orally pre-treated with Ξ²-glucans for 14 days. We tested curdlan (a particulate Ξ²-(1,3)-glucan), glucan phosphate (a soluble Ξ²-(1,3)-glucan), and zymosan (a particle made from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which contains around 55% Ξ²-glucans). Weight loss, colon weight, and feces score did not differ between Ξ²-glucan and vehicle treated groups. However, histology scores indicated that Ξ²-glucan-treated mice had increased inflammation at a microscopic level suggesting that Ξ²-glucan treatment worsened intestinal inflammation. Furthermore, curdlan and zymosan treatment led to increased colonic levels of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, compared to vehicle. Glucan phosphate treatment did not significantly affect cytokine and chemokine levels. These data suggest that particulate and soluble Ξ²-glucans differentially affect the intestinal immune responses. However, no significant differences in other clinical colitis scores between soluble and particulate Ξ²-glucans were found in this study. In summary, Ξ²-glucans aggravate the course of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced intestinal inflammation at the level of the mucosa

Spatial correlations in vote statistics: a diffusive field model for decision-making

We study the statistics of turnout rates and results of the French elections since 1992. We find that the distribution of turnout rates across towns is surprisingly stable over time. The spatial correlation of the turnout rates, or of the fraction of winning votes, is found to decay logarithmically with the distance between towns. Based on these empirical observations and on the analogy with a two-dimensional random diffusion equation, we propose that individual decisions can be rationalised in terms of an underlying "cultural" field, that locally biases the decision of the population of a given region, on top of an idiosyncratic, town-dependent field, with short range correlations. Using symmetry considerations and a set of plausible assumptions, we suggest that this cultural field obeys a random diffusion equation.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures; added sociophysics references

First Principles Calculations of Fe on GaAs (100)

We have calculated from first principles the electronic structure of 0.5 monolayer upto 5 monolayer thick Fe layers on top of a GaAs (100) surface. We find the Fe magnetic moment to be determined by the Fe-As distance. As segregates to the top of the Fe film, whereas Ga most likely is found within the Fe film. Moreover, we find an asymmetric in-plane contraction of our unit-cell along with an expansion perpendicular to the surface. We predict the number of Fe 3d-holes to increase with increasing Fe thickness on pp-doped GaAs.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures, submitted to PR

Apremilast, an oral phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor, in patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis: Results of a phase III, randomized, controlled trial (Efficacy and Safety Trial Evaluating the Effects of Apremilast in Psoriasis [ESTEEM] 1)

    Get PDF
BackgroundApremilast works intracellularly to regulate inflammatory mediators.ObjectiveESTEEM 1 evaluated efficacy/safety of apremilast at 30 mg twice a day for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.MethodsThis phase III, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled study randomized adults (2:1) to apremilast or placebo. At week 16, the placebo group switched to apremilast through week 32, followed by a randomized treatment withdrawal phase to week 52. Binary end points were analyzed using Ο‡2 test; continuous end points used analysis of covariance.ResultsIn all, 844 patients were randomized (n = 282, placebo; n = 562, apremilast). At week 16, significantly more patients taking apremilast achieved 75% or greater reduction from baseline Psoriasis Area and Severity Index score (PASI-75) (33.1%) versus placebo (5.3%, P < .0001; primary end point). Most (61.0%) patients rerandomized to apremilast at week 32 achieved PASI-75 at week 52 versus 11.7% rerandomized to placebo. Of patients rerandomized to apremilast at week 32, mean percentage change from baseline PASI score was βˆ’88% to βˆ’81% (weeks 32-52). During the placebo-controlled period, 55.7% and 69.3% of patients randomized to placebo and apremilast, respectively, had 1 or more adverse events. Most adverse events were mild/moderate in severity. No new significant adverse events emerged with continued apremilast exposure versus the placebo-controlled period.LimitationsData were limited to 52 weeks and may not generalize to nonplaque psoriasis.ConclusionsApremilast was effective in moderate to severe plaque psoriasis

Coupled Dipole Method Determination of the Electromagnetic Force on a Particle over a Flat Dielectric Substrate

We present a theory to compute the force due to light upon a particle on a dielectric plane by the Coupled Dipole Method (CDM). We show that, with this procedure, two equivalent ways of analysis are possible, both based on Maxwell's stress tensor. The interest in using this method is that the nature and size or shape of the object, can be arbitrary. Even more, the presence of a substrate can be incorporated. To validate our theory, we present an analytical expression of the force due to the light acting on a particle either in presence, or not, of a surface. The plane wave illuminating the sphere can be either propagating or evanescent. Both two and three dimensional calculations are studied.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures and 3 table

Moderate to vigorous physical activity interactions with genetic variants and body mass index in a large US ethnically diverse cohort

Summary What is already known about this subject Genome-Wide Association Studies have successfully identified numerous genetic loci that influence body mass index in European-descent middle-aged adults. Adolescence is a high-risk period for the development of adult obesity and severe obesity. Physical activity is one of the most promising behavioural candidates for preventing and reducing weight gain, particularly among youth. What this study adds An examination of the joint association between 41 of the well-established obesity susceptibility single-nucleotide polymorphisms with <5 vs. β‰₯5 bouts of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per week in relation to body mass index (BMI)-for-age Z-score in a nationally representative sample of European American, African-American and Hispanic American adolescents. Three nominally significant interactions (P < 0.05) varied by race/ethnicity. Overall, the estimated effect of the risk allele on BMI-for-age Z-score was greater in individuals with <5 than those with β‰₯5 bouts MVPA per week. Background Little is known about the interaction between genetic and behavioural factors during lifecycle risk periods for obesity and how associations vary across race/ethnicity. Objective The objective of this study was to examine joint associations of adiposity-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with body mass index (BMI) in a diverse adolescent cohort. Methods Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (n = 8113: Wave II 1996; ages 12-21, Wave III; ages 18-27), we assessed interactions of 41 well-established SNPs and MVPA with BMI-for-age Z-scores in European Americans (EA; n = 5077), African-Americans (AA; n = 1736) and Hispanic Americans (HA; n = 1300). Results Of 97 assessed, we found nominally significant SNP-MVPA interactions on BMI-for-age Z-score in EA at GNPDA2 and FTO and in HA at LZTR2/SEC16B. In EA, the estimated effect of the FTO risk allele on BMI-for-age Z-score was lower (Ξ² = -0.13; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.08, 0.18) in individuals with β‰₯5 vs. <5 (Ξ² = 0.24; CI: 0.16, 0.32) bouts of MVPA per week (P for interaction 0.02). Race/ethnicity-pooled meta-analysis showed nominally significant interactions for SNPs at TFAP2B, POC5 and LYPLAL1. Conclusions High MVPA may attenuate underlying genetic risk for obesity during adolescence, a high-risk period for adult obesity
