Collective dipole excitations in sodium clusters
Some properties of small and medium sodium clusters are described within the
RPA approach using a projected spherical single particle basis. The oscillator
strengths calculated with a Schiff-like dipole transition operator and folded
with Lorentzian functions are used to calculate the photoabsorbtion cross
section spectra. The results are further employed to establish the dependence
of the plasmon frequency on the number of cluster components. Static electric
polarizabilities of the clusters excited in a RPA dipole state are also
calculated.
Comparison of our results with the corresponding experimental data show an

On the correctness of a branch displacement algorithm
The branch displacement problem is a well-known problem in assembler design. It revolves around the feature, present in several processor families, of having different instructions, of different sizes, for jumps of different displacements. The problem, which is provably NP-hard, is then to select the instructions such that one ends up with the smallest possible program.

Efficacy of increased resistant starch consumption in human type 2 diabetes
Resistant starch (RS) has been shown to beneficially affect insulin sensitivity in healthy individuals and those with metabolic syndrome, but its effects on human type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are unknown. This study aimed to determine the effects of increased RS consumption on insulin sensitivity and glucose control and changes in postprandial metabolites and body fat in T2DM. Seventeen individuals with well-controlled T2DM (HbA1c 46.6±2 mmol/mol) consumed, in a random order, either 40 g of type 2 RS (HAM-RS2) or a placebo, daily for 12 weeks with a 12-week washout period in between. At the end of each intervention period, participants attended for three metabolic investigations: a two-step euglycemic–hyperinsulinemic clamp combined with an infusion of [6,6-2H2] glucose, a meal tolerance test (MTT) with arterio-venous sampling across the forearm, and whole-body imaging. HAM-RS2 resulted in significantly lower postprandial glucose concentrations (P=0.045) and a trend for greater glucose uptake across the forearm muscle (P=0.077); however, there was no effect of HAM-RS2 on hepatic or peripheral insulin sensitivity, or on HbA1c. Fasting non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations were significantly lower (P=0.004) and NEFA suppression was greater during the clamp with HAM-RS2 (P=0.001). Fasting triglyceride (TG) concentrations and soleus intramuscular TG concentrations were significantly higher following the consumption of HAM-RS2 (P=0.039 and P=0.027 respectively). Although fasting GLP1 concentrations were significantly lower following HAM-RS2 consumption (P=0.049), postprandial GLP1 excursions during the MTT were significantly greater (P=0.009). HAM-RS2 did not improve tissue insulin sensitivity in well-controlled T2DM, but demonstrated beneficial effects on meal handling, possibly due to higher postprandial GLP1
Absence of a dose-rate effect in the transformation of C3H 10T1/2 cells by α-particles
The findings of Hill et al. (1984) on the greatly enhanced transformation frequencies at very low dose rates of fission neutrons induced us to perform an analogous study with -particles at comparable dose rates. Transformation frequencies were determined with γ-rays at high dose rate (0·5 Gy/min), and with -particles at high (0·2 Gy/min) and at low dose rates (0·83-2·5 mGy/min) in the C3H 10T1/2 cell system.
α-particles were substantially more effective than γ-rays, both for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation at high and low dose rates. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation was of similar magnitude, and ranged from about 3 at an -particle dose of 2 Gy to values of the order of 10 at 0·25 Gy. In contrast to the experiments of Hill et al. (1984) with fission neutrons, no increased transformation frequencies were observed when the -particle dose was protracted over several hours
Evolution of density perturbations in a realistic universe
Prompted by the recent more precise determination of the basic cosmological
parameters and growing evidence that the matter-energy content of the universe
is now dominated by dark energy and dark matter we present the general solution
of the equation that describes the evolution of density perturbations in the
linear approximation. It turns out that as in the standard CDM model the
density perturbations grow very slowly during the radiation dominated epoch and
their amplitude increases by a factor of about 4000 in the matter and later
dark energy dominated epoch of expansion of the universe.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure
Renormalization of Hamiltonian Field Theory; a non-perturbative and non-unitarity approach
Renormalization of Hamiltonian field theory is usually a rather painful
algebraic or numerical exercise. By combining a method based on the coupled
cluster method, analysed in detail by Suzuki and Okamoto, with a Wilsonian
approach to renormalization, we show that a powerful and elegant method exist
to solve such problems. The method is in principle non-perturbative, and is not

Boost-Invariant Running Couplings in Effective Hamiltonians
We apply a boost-invariant similarity renormalization group procedure to a
light-front Hamiltonian of a scalar field phi of bare mass mu and interaction
term g phi^3 in 6 dimensions using 3rd order perturbative expansion in powers
of the coupling constant g. The initial Hamiltonian is regulated using momentum
dependent factors that approach 1 when a cutoff parameter Delta tends to
infinity. The similarity flow of corresponding effective Hamiltonians is
integrated analytically and two counterterms depending on Delta are obtained in
the initial Hamiltonian: a change in mu and a change of g. In addition, the
interaction vertex requires a Delta-independent counterterm that contains a
boost invariant function of momenta of particles participating in the
interaction. The resulting effective Hamiltonians contain a running coupling
constant that exhibits asymptotic freedom. The evolution of the coupling with
changing width of effective Hamiltonians agrees with results obtained using
Feynman diagrams and dimensional regularization when one identifies the
renormalization scale with the width. The effective light-front Schroedinger
equation is equally valid in a whole class of moving frames of reference
including the infinite momentum frame. Therefore, the calculation described
here provides an interesting pattern one can attempt to follow in the case of

An Effective-Medium Tight-Binding Model for Silicon
A new method for calculating the total energy of Si systems is presented. The
method is based on the effective-medium theory concept of a reference system.
Instead of calculating the energy of an atom in the system of interest a
reference system is introduced where the local surroundings are similar. The
energy of the reference system can be calculated selfconsistently once and for
all while the energy difference to the reference system can be obtained
approximately. We propose to calculate it using the tight-binding LMTO scheme
with the Atomic-Sphere Approximation(ASA) for the potential, and by using the
ASA with charge-conserving spheres we are able to treat open system without
introducing empty spheres. All steps in the calculational method is {\em ab
initio} in the sense that all quantities entering are calculated from first
principles without any fitting to experiment. A complete and detailed
description of the method is given together with test calculations of the
energies of phonons, elastic constants, different structures, surfaces and
surface reconstructions. We compare the results to calculations using an

Plasma lipoxin A4 and resolvin D1 are not associated with reduced adenoma risk in a randomized trial of aspirin to prevent colon adenomas
Inflammation plays a major role in colon carcinogenesis. Endogenously produced specialized proresolving lipid mediators (SPMs) play a central role in inflammation and tissue homeostasis, and have been implicated in carcinogenesis. We studied the associations of plasma levels of two SPMs [lipoxin A4 (LXA4) and resolvin D1(RvD1)] with risk for recurrent adenoma. In this pilot study, we used data and biosamples from an adenoma chemoprevention study investigating the effects of aspirin and/or folic acid on the occurrence of colorectal adenomas. In the parent study, 1121 participants with a recent adenoma were randomized to study agents to be taken until the next surveillance colonoscopy about 3 years later. In this pilot study, LXA4 and RvD1 from samples taken near the end of study treatment were measured in a randomly selected sub-set of 200 participants. Commercially available ELISA kits to assay the analytes were validated using a metabololipidomic LC-MS/MS assay. Poisson regression with a robust error variance was used to calculate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Plasma LXA4 and RvD1 were not associated with the risk of adenoma occurrence. LXA4 at the end of study follow-up was 32% (P = 0.01) proportionately higher in women compared to men. A similar non-significant trend toward higher levels among women was observed for RvD1. Our preliminary findings provided no evidence that plasma LXA4 or RvD1 are associated with reduced risk of colorectal adenoma occurrence, but suggest LXA4 may differ among men and women. Future studies focusing on SPM's local effects and levels in the colon are needed
