Evolution of Quantum Criticality in CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4

    Get PDF
Crystal structure, specific heat, thermal expansion, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity studies of the heavy fermion system CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 (0 <= x <= 1) reveal a continuous tuning of the ground state by Ni/Cu substitution from an effectively fourfold degenerate non-magnetic Kondo ground state of CeNi_9Ge_4 (with pronounced non-Fermi-liquid features) towards a magnetically ordered, effectively twofold degenerate ground state in CeNi_8CuGe_4 with T_N = 175 +- 5 mK. Quantum critical behavior, C/T ~ \chi ~ -ln(T), is observed for x about 0.4. Hitherto, CeNi_{9-x}Cu_xGe_4 represents the first system where a substitution-driven quantum phase transition is connected not only with changes of the relative strength of Kondo effect and RKKY interaction, but also with a reduction of the effective crystal field ground state degeneracy.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

AC/DC Susceptibility of the Heavy-Fermion Superconductor CePt3Si under Pressure

We have investigated the pressure dependence of ac and dc susceptibilities of the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si (Tc= 0.75 K) that coexists with antiferromagnetism (TN = 2.2 K). As hydrostatic pressure is increased, Tc first decreases rapidly, then rather slowly near the critical pressure Pc = 0.6 GPa and shows a stronger decrease again at higher pressures, where Pc is the pressure at which TN becomes zero. A transition width and a difference in the two transition temperatures defined in the form of structures in the out-of-phase component of ac susceptibilities also become small near Pc, indicating that a double transition observed in CePt3Si is caused by some inhomogeneous property in the sample that leads to a spatial variation of local pressure. A sudden increase in the Meissner fraction above Pc suggests the influence of antiferromagnetism on superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages with 5 figures. This paper will be published in J. Phys. Soc. This study aimed to assess the influence of nutrient media content on the production of antibiotics and the ability of water fungi isolated from lake Baikal to synthesize novel natural products. Interest in this topic stems from the high demand for new drugs, and studies are carried out via the screening of new natural products with biological activity produced by unstudied or extremophilic microorganisms. For this study, a strain of Penicillium sp. was isolated from endemic Baikal phytophagous amphipod species. Here, we identified natural products using the following classical assays: biotechnological cultivation, MALDI identification of the strain, natural product extraction, antimicrobial activity determination, and modern methods such as HPLC-MS for the dereplication and description of natural products. It was found that many detected metabolites were not included in the most extensive database. Most of the identified metabolites were characterized by their biological activity and demonstrated antibiotic activity against model Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The isolated strain of water fungus produced penicolinate B, meleagrin A, austinoneol A, andrastin A, and other natural products. Additionally, we show that the synthesis of low-molecular-weight natural products depends on the composition of the microbiological nutrient media used for cultivation. Thus, although the golden age of antibiotics ended many years ago and microscopic fungi are well studied producers of known antibiotics, the water fungi of the Lake Baikal ecosystem possess great potential in the search for new natural products for the development of new drugs. These natural products can become new pharmaceuticals and can be used in therapy to treat new diseases such as SARS, MERS, H5N1, etc

Measurement of the e+eK+Kπ+πe^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^- cross section with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 collider

The process e+eK+Kπ+πe^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^- has been studied in the center-of-mass energy range from 1500 to 2000\,MeV using a data sample of 23 pb1^{-1} collected with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 e+ee^+e^- collider. Using about 24000 selected events, the e+eK+Kπ+πe^+e^- \to K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^- cross section has been measured with a systematic uncertainty decreasing from 11.7\% at 1500-1600\,MeV to 6.1\% above 1800\,MeV. A preliminary study of K+Kπ+πK^+K^-\pi^+\pi^- production dynamics has been performed

Study of the process e+eppˉe^+e^-\to p\bar{p} in the c.m. energy range from threshold to 2 GeV with the CMD-3 detector

Using a data sample of 6.8 pb1^{-1} collected with the CMD-3 detector at the VEPP-2000 e+ee^+e^- collider we select about 2700 events of the e+eppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} process and measure its cross section at 12 energy ponts with about 6\% systematic uncertainty. From the angular distribution of produced nucleons we obtain the ratio GE/GM=1.49±0.23±0.30|G_{E}/G_{M}| = 1.49 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.30

FIRST REPORT ON TRUFFLE-INHABITING FUNGI AND METAGENOMIC COMMUNITIES OF TUBER AESTIVUM COLLECTED IN RUSSIA

Truffles are one of the least studied groups of fungi in terms of their biological and biotechnological aspects. This study aimed to isolate truffle-inhabiting fungi and assess the metagenomic communities of the most common Russian summer truffle, Tuber aestivum. This study is the first to characterize the biodiversity of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms living in the truffle T. aestivum using molecular analysis and sequencing. Plant pathogens involved in a symbiotic relationship with truffles were identified by sequencing the hypervariable fragments of the 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes. In addition, some strains of fungal symbionts and likely pathogens were isolated and recognized for the first time from the truffles. This study also compared and characterized the general diversity and distribution of microbial taxa of T. aestivum collected in Russia and Europe. The results revealed that the Russian and European truffle study materials demonstrated high similarity. In addition to the truffles, representatives of bacteria, fungi, and protists were found in the fruiting bodies. Many of these prokaryotic and eukaryotic species inhabiting truffles might influence them, help them form mycorrhizae with trees, and regulate biological processes. Thus, truffles are interesting and promising sources for modern biotechnological and agricultural studies

MICROSPORIDIAN PARASITES OF SOME SPECIES ENDEMICK AMPHIPODS OF LAKE BAIKAL

With use universal microsporidian SSU rDNA primers were carry out PCR based screening of nine species endemic amphipods of lake Baikal. Six differ species microsporidian parasites were find out at two species of amphipods (P. cancellus and E. verrrucosus). Three parasites of uncovered microsporidian are endemick.
