Visitors' Interpretive Strategies at Wolverhampton Art Gallery
Making Meaning in Art Museums is one of two research projects on the theme of art museums and interpretive communities. The first was published as Making Meaning 1:Visitors' Interpretive Strategies at Wolverhampton Art Gallery (RCMG 2001). Making Meaning in Art Museums 2 is the second of two research projects on the theme of art museums and interpretive communities. The Long Gallery at the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery was selected as the research site for this second study. Both studies have explored the ways in which visitors talked about their experience of a visit to the art museum-both what they said about the paintings and the whole of the visit. The research questions on which this project is based are: What interpretive strategies and repertories are deployed by art museum visitors? Can distinct interpretive communities be identified? What are the implications for the communication policies within art museums? This research is an ethnographic study, using qualitative methods. This research project was funded through a grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Boar
A pitfall of piecewise-polytropic equation of state inference
The only messenger radiation in the Universe which one can use to
statistically probe the Equation of State (EOS) of cold dense matter is that
originating from the near-field vicinities of compact stars. Constraining
gravitational masses and equatorial radii of rotating compact stars is a major
goal for current and future telescope missions, with a primary purpose of
constraining the EOS. From a Bayesian perspective it is necessary to carefully
discuss prior definition; in this context a complicating issue is that in
practice there exist pathologies in the general relativistic mapping between
spaces of local (interior source matter) and global (exterior spacetime)
parameters. In a companion paper, these issues were raised on a theoretical
basis. In this study we reproduce a probability transformation procedure from
the literature in order to map a joint posterior distribution of Schwarzschild
gravitational masses and radii into a joint posterior distribution of EOS
parameters. We demonstrate computationally that EOS parameter inferences are
sensitive to the choice to define a prior on a joint space of these masses and
radii, instead of on a joint space interior source matter parameters. We focus
on the piecewise-polytropic EOS model, which is currently standard in the field
of astrophysical dense matter study. We discuss the implications of this issue
for the field.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Political and Media Discourses about Integrating Refugees in the UK
The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. This article addresses political and media discourses about integrating refugees in the UK in the context of the ârefugee crisisâ. A discursive psychological approach is presented as the best way to understand what talk about the concept is used to accomplish in these debates. A large corpus of political discussions (13 hours of debate featuring 146 politicians) and 960 newspaper articles from the UK were discourse analysed. The analysis identified five dilemmas about integration: Integration is positive and necessary, but challenging; Host communities are presented as welcoming, but there are limits to their capacity; Refugees are responsible for integration, but host communities need to provide support; Good refugees integrate, bad ones don't; Refugees are vulnerable and are skilled. All are used to warrant the inclusion or exclusion of refugees. The responsibility of western nations to support refugees is therefore contingent on the refugees behaving in specific ways
The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell
The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell was devised for high voltage low current applications. Devices to be flight tested in early 1974 with 96 series connected PNN+ junctions in a 2 cm X 2.3 cm size deliver 36 volts at 1 milliampere. Test data of M-J cells fabricated with resistivities of 10, 50, 100, 200, 450, and 1000 ohm cm silicon are presented and problem areas are discussed. An additional potential application of the M-J cell lies in ultilization of its high intensity performance that has been demonstrated at levels in excess of 100 AMO suns
International shipping of fumonisins from maize extracts on C\u3csub\u3e18\u3c/sub\u3e sorbent
Fumonisins are mycotoxins found in maize. In developing countries, the resources required for analysis are often lacking, and the shipping of maize between countries can be difficult since the importation of plant materials requires permits/ inspection to prevent the entry of pests that frequently infest maize. A simple, safe and legal method for shipping maize extracts to the USA was needed to conduct a survey of fumonisins in Central America. The objective was to develop a method for isolating and shipping maize extracts for fumonisin analysis so as to facilitate a survey of fumonisin exposure. The results indicate that fumonisins in acetonitrile:water extracts of maize can be isolated on C18 cartridges, held for at least 3 days at 22 °C and then an additional 4 days at 4 °C before elution and analysis with no losses. This method allows the importation and analysis of maize samples from foreign locations without complications from international safety concerns

On-demand or Spot? Selling the cloud to risk-averse customers
In Amazon EC2, cloud resources are sold through a combination of an on-demand
market, in which customers buy resources at a fixed price, and a spot market,
in which customers bid for an uncertain supply of excess resources. Standard
market environments suggest that an optimal design uses just one type of
market. We show the prevalence of a dual market system can be explained by
heterogeneous risk attitudes of customers. In our stylized model, we consider
unit demand risk-averse bidders. We show the model admits a unique equilibrium,
with higher revenue and higher welfare than using only spot markets.
Furthermore, as risk aversion increases, the usage of the on-demand market
increases. We conclude that risk attitudes are an important factor in cloud
resource allocation and should be incorporated into models of cloud markets.Comment: Appeared at WINE 201
Using humanoid robots to study human behavior
Our understanding of human behavior advances as our humanoid robotics work progresses-and vice versa. This team's work focuses on trajectory formation and planning, learning from demonstration, oculomotor control and interactive behaviors. They are programming robotic behavior based on how we humans âprogramâ behavior in-or train-each other
A Longitudinal Study of the Reciprocal Relationship Between Ever Smoking and Urgency in Early Adolescence
BackgroundâAmong early adolescents in the United States (U.S.), the prevalence of cigarette smoking is at its lowest level in recent decades. Nonetheless, given the risks of smoking in early development, it remains critically important to study both risk factors for smoking and risks from smoking. This longitudinal study with U.S. early adolescents examines smoking initiation and tests a model of reciprocal prediction between ever smoking and the personality trait of urgency (i.e., mood-based impulsivity), a trait that increases risk for multiple forms of dysfunction.
MethodsâParticipants (n=1906; 90% 10â11 years old, 50% female, 39% racial minorities at baseline) completed questionnaires 1â2 times per year starting in 5th grade and ending in 9th grade. Structural equation modeling allowed tests of bidirectional relationships between ever smoking and urgency controlling for pubertal status and negative affect at each wave.
ResultsâIncidence of ever smoking increased from 5% to 27% over time, with current smoking around 5% at the last wave. Urgency at each wave predicted ever smoking at the next wave above and beyond covariates and prior smoking (all p \u3c .01). Likewise, with one exception, ever smoking predicted an increase in urgency at the subsequent wave above and beyond covariates and prior urgency (all p \u3c .05).
ConclusionâResults show that risk for smoking increases with higher levels of urgency and urgency increases secondary to engagement in smoking. Future work should therefore explore urgency as a point of prevention for smoking and smoking cessation as a means to mitigate mood-based impulsivity
