The Gaussian Plasma Lens in Astrophysics. Refraction
We consider the geometrical optics for refraction of a distant radio source
by an interstellar plasma lens, with application to a lens with a Gaussian
electron column density profile. The refractive properties of the lens are
specified completely by a dimensionless parameter, alpha, which is a function
of the wavelength of observation, the lens' electron column density, the
lens-observer distance, and the transverse diameter of the lens. Relative
motion of the observer and lens produces modulations in the source's light
curve. Plasma lenses are diverging so the light curve displays a minimum, when
the lens is on-axis, surrounded by enhancements above the unlensed flux
density. Lensing can also produce caustics, multiple imaging, and angular
position wander of the background source. If caustics are formed, the
separation of the outer caustics can constrain alpha, while the separation of
the inner caustics can constrain the size of the lens. We apply our analysis to
0954+654, a source for which we can identify caustics in its light curve, and
1741-038, for which polarization observations were obtained during and after
the scattering event. We find general agreement between modelled and observed
light curves at 2.25 GHz, but poor agreement at 8.1 GHz. The discrepancies may
result from a combination of lens substructure or anisotropic shape, a lens
that only grazes the source, or unresolved source substructure. Our analysis
places the following constraints on the lenses: Toward 0954+654 (1741-038) the
lens was 0.38 AU (0.065 AU) in diameter, with a peak column density of 0.24 pc
cm^{-3} (1E-4 pc cm^{-3}) and an electron density of 1E5 cm^{-3} (300 cm^{-3}).
The angular wander caused by the lens was 250 mas (0.4 mas) at 2.25 GHz. For

Angular Broadening of Intraday Variable AGN. II. Interstellar and Intergalactic Scattering
We analyze a sample of 58 multi-wavelength, Very Long Baseline Array
observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to determine their scattering
properties. Approximately 75% of the sample consists of AGN that exhibit
centimeter-wavelength intraday variability (interstellar scintillation) while
the other 25% do not show intraday variability. We find that interstellar
scattering is measurable for most of these AGN, and the typical broadening
diameter is 2 mas at 1 GHz. We find that the scintillating AGN are typically at
lower Galactic latitudes than the non-scintillating AGN, consistent with the
scenario that intraday variability is a propagation effect from the Galactic
interstellar medium. The magnitude of the inferred interstellar broadening
measured toward the scintillating AGN, when scaled to higher frequencies, is
comparable to the diameters inferred from analyses of the light curves for the
more well-known intraday variable sources. However, we find no difference in
the amount of scattering measured toward the scintillating versus
non-scintillating AGN. A consistent picture is one in which the scintillation
results from localized regions ("clumps") distributed throughout the Galactic
disk, but which individually make little contribution to the angular
broadening. Of the 58 AGN observed, 37 (64%) have measured redshifts. At best,
a marginal trend is found for scintillating (non-scintillating) AGN to have
smaller (larger) angular diameters at higher redshifts. We also use our
observations to try to constrain the possibility of intergalactic scattering.
While broadly consistent with the scenario of a highly turbulent intergalactic
medium, our observations do not place significant constraints on its

Prevalence of non-O157:H7 shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in diarrheal stool samples from Nebraska.
We determined the prevalence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in diarrheal stool samples from Nebraska by three methods: cefixime-tellurite sorbitol MacConkey (CT- SMAC) culture, enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) enzyme immunoassay, and stx1,2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Fourteen (4.2%) of 335 specimens were positive by at least one method (CT-SMAC culture [6 of 14], EHEC enzyme immunoassay [13 of 14], stx1,2 PCR [14 of 14]). Six contained serogroup O157, while non-O157 were as prevalent as O157 serogroups
Symbolic Manipulators Affect Mathematical Mindsets
Symbolic calculators like Mathematica are becoming more commonplace among
upper level physics students. The presence of such a powerful calculator can
couple strongly to the type of mathematical reasoning students employ. It does
not merely offer a convenient way to perform the computations students would
have otherwise wanted to do by hand. This paper presents examples from the work
of upper level physics majors where Mathematica plays an active role in
focusing and sustaining their thought around calculation. These students still
engage in powerful mathematical reasoning while they calculate but struggle
because of the narrowed breadth of their thinking. Their reasoning is drawn
into local attractors where they look to calculation schemes to resolve
questions instead of, for example, mapping the mathematics to the physical
system at hand. We model the influence of Mathematica as an integral part of
the constant feedback that occurs in how students frame, and hence focus, their
work

Patient-reported outcome measures obtained via E-Health tools ease the assessment burden and encourage patient participation in cancer care (PaCC Study) BACKGROUND: E-health based patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have the potential to automate early identification of both nutrition status and distress status in cancer patients while facilitating treatment and encouraging patient participation. This cross-sectional study assessed the acceptability, accuracy, and clinical utility of PROMs collected via E-Health tools among patients undergoing treatment for stomach, colorectal, and pancreatic tumors. RESULTS: Eight-nine percent mostly, or completely, agreed that PROMs via tablets should be integrated in routine clinical care. Men were significantly more likely to require help completing the questionnaires than women (inv.OR= 0.51, 95% CI=(0.27, 0.95), p = 0.035). The level of help needed increased by 3% with each 1-year increase in age (inv. OR=1.03, 95% CI=(1.01, 1.06), p = 0.013). On average, a patient tended to declare weight which was 0.84 kg inferior to their true weight (Bland and Altman 95 % CI=(-3.9, 5.6); SD: 2.41) and a height which was 0.95 cm superior to their true height (Bland and Altman 95 % CI=(-5, 3.1); SD 2.08). Patient-reported nutrition status was significantly associated with the professionally generated assessment (95% CI=(2.27, 4.15), p < 0.001). As nutrition status declined, the distress score increased (95%CI=(0.88, 1.68), p < 0.001). Of the patients, 48.8% who were both distressed and malnourished requested supportive care to address their problems. CONCLUSION: Patient-reported assessments utilizing E-health tools are an accurate and efficient method to encourage patient participation in cancer care while simultaneously ensuring that regular assessment of psycho-social and nutritional aspects of care are efficiently integrated in the daily clinical routine
Precision Astrometry with the Very Long Baseline Array: Parallaxes and Proper Motions for 14 Pulsars
Astrometry can bring powerful constraints to bear on a variety of scientific
questions about neutron stars, including their origins, astrophysics,
evolution, and environments. Using phase-referenced observations at the VLBA,
in conjunction with pulsar gating and in-beam calibration, we have measured the
parallaxes and proper motions for 14 pulsars. The smallest measured parallax in
our sample is 0.13+-0.02 mas for PSR B1541+09, which has a most probable
distance of 7.2+1.3-1.1 kpc. We detail our methods, including initial VLA
surveys to select candidates and find in-beam calibrators, VLBA
phase-referencing, pulsar gating, calibration, and data reduction. The use of
the bootstrap method to estimate astrometric uncertainties in the presence of
unmodeled systematic errors is also described. Based on our new
model-independent estimates for distance and transverse velocity, we
investigate the kinematics and birth sites of the pulsars and revisit models of
the Galactic electron density distribution. We find that young pulsars are
moving away from the Galactic plane, as expected, and that age estimates from
kinematics and pulsar spindown are generally in agreement, with certain notable
exceptions. Given its present trajectory, the pulsar B2045-16 was plausibly
born in the open cluster NGC 6604. For several high-latitude pulsars, the
NE2001 electron density model underestimates the parallax distances by a factor
of two, while in others the estimates agree with or are larger than the
parallax distances, suggesting that the interstellar medium is irregular on
relevant length scales. The VLBA astrometric results for the recycled pulsar
J1713+0747 are consistent with two independent estimates from pulse timing,

Overexpression of the p73 gene is a novel finding in high-risk B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia
The p73 protein shares structural and functional similarities with the tumour-suppressor p53, but its role in neoplastic transformation is unknown. Alternative splicing leads to the expression of at least nine p73 C-terminal mRNA splice variants (α β γ δ ε ξ η ηl θ). In this survey, we analyse the expression of p73 by real-time quantitative RT-PCR, its known C-terminal variants with an RT-PCR-Southern tech nique and by Western blot in samples of 51 patients with B-CLL, normal B lymphocytes from eight individuals, and five haematopoetic cell lines. p73α protein expression positively correlated with higher risk B-CLL stages (P=0.046). Total p73 mRNA expression was higher (P= 0.01) and p73α protein more frequently detected (P=0.008) in B-CLL compared with normal CD19+—B-lymphocytes. p73 C-terminal mRNA variants were expressed both in B-CLL and in normal B-lymphocytes, but their expression was biased since the γ (P=0.041), the θ (P ≪ 0.001), and the η variant (P=0.033) prevailed in normal B-lymphocytes. In summary, we conclude that the accumulation of p73, the expression pattern of particular p73 variants and its link to progression may play a distinct role in the molecular pathology B-CL
