Effects of immobilization on spermiogenesis
The influence of immobilization stress on spermiogenesis in rats was investigated. After 96 hour immobilization, histological changes began to manifest themselves in the form of practically complete disappearance of cell population of the wall of seminiferous tubule as well as a markedly increased number of cells with pathologic mitoses. Enzymological investigations showed various changes of activity (of acid and alkaline phosphatase and nonspecific esterase) in the 24, 48, and 96 hour immobilization groups
Micromorphology of neurohypophysis of rats under experimental conditions
The changes of the quantity of neurosecretory substance in neurohypophysis of rats under various experimental conditions are investigated. Comparing to the norm the quantity of neurosecretion after a long stay in the dark was larger. In animals subjected to immobilization stress the picture of neurohypophysis remained unchanged. It changed only in correlation with the administered water. Results indicate that the immobilization stress, in contradistinction to dolorose stress, has no substantial influence upon the quantity of neurosecretion in neurohypophysis
From Majorana theory of atomic autoionization to Feshbach resonances in high temperature superconductors
The Ettore Majorana paper - Theory of incomplete P triplets- published in
1931, focuses on the role of selection rules for the non-radiative decay of two
electron excitations in atomic spectra, involving the configuration interaction
between discrete and continuum channels. This work is a key step for
understanding the 1935 work of Ugo Fano on the asymmetric lineshape of two
electron excitations and the 1958 Herman Feshbach paper on the shape resonances
in nuclear scattering arising from configuration interaction between many
different scattering channels. The Feshbach resonances are today of high
scientific interest in many different fields and in particular for ultracold
gases and high Tc superconductivity.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism

Elastic and Raman scattering of 9.0 and 11.4 MeV photons from Au, Dy and In
Monoenergetic photons between 8.8 and 11.4 MeV were scattered elastically and
in elastically (Raman) from natural targets of Au, Dy and In.15 new cross
sections were measured. Evidence is presented for a slight deformation in the
197Au nucleus, generally believed to be spherical. It is predicted, on the
basis of these measurements, that the Giant Dipole Resonance of Dy is very
similar to that of 160Gd. A narrow isolated resonance at 9.0 MeV is observed in

Scaling Laws and Transient Times in 3He Induced Nuclear Fission
Fission excitation functions of compound nuclei in a mass region where shell
effects are expected to be very strong are shown to scale exactly according to
the transition state prediction once these shell effects are accounted for. The
fact that no deviations from the transition state method have been observed
within the experimentally investigated excitation energy regime allows one to
assign an upper limit for the transient time of 10 zs.Comment: 7 pages, TeX type, psfig, submitted to Phys. Rev. C, also available

Modelling of the effect of ELMs on fuel retention at the bulk W divertor of JET
Effect of ELMs on fuel retention at the bulk W target of JET ITER-Like Wall was studied with multi-scale calculations. Plasma input parameters were taken from ELMy H-mode plasma experiment. The energetic intra-ELM fuel particles get implanted and create near-surface defects up to depths of few tens of nm, which act as the main fuel trapping sites during ELMs. Clustering of implantation-induced vacancies were found to take place. The incoming flux of inter-ELM plasma particles increases the different filling levels of trapped fuel in defects. The temperature increase of the W target during the pulse increases the fuel detrapping rate. The inter-ELM fuel particle flux refills the partially emptied trapping sites and fills new sites. This leads to a competing effect on the retention and release rates of the implanted particles. At high temperatures the main retention appeared in larger vacancy clusters due to increased clustering rate
Shattered pellet injection experiments at JET in support of the ITER disruption mitigation system design
A series of experiments have been executed at JET to assess the efficacy of the newly installed shattered pellet injection (SPI) system in mitigating the effects of disruptions. Issues, important for the ITER disruption mitigation system, such as thermal load mitigation, avoidance of runaway electron (RE) formation, radiation asymmetries during thermal quench mitigation, electromagnetic load control and RE energy dissipation have been addressed over a large parameter range. The efficiency of the mitigation has been examined for the various SPI injection strategies. The paper summarises the results from these JET SPI experiments and discusses their implications for the ITER disruption mitigation scheme
