A parametric study of the value of hydrological information for irrigation and hydropower management of the Feather River
A case study analysis is presented of the relationships between improvements in the accuracy, frequency, and timeliness of information used in making hydrological forecasts and economic benefits in the areas of hydropower and irrigation. The area chosen for the case study is the Oroville Dam and Reservoir. Emphasis is placed on the use of timely and accurate mapping of the aerial extent of snow in the basin by earth resources survey systems such as LANDSAT. The subject of benefits resulting from improved runoff forecasts is treated in a generalized way without specifying the source of the improvements
A New Medicare End-of-Life Benefit for Nursing Home Residents
A new Medicare benefit is needed to support end-of-life care for those spending their final days in a nursing home, say the authors of this article. Arguing that the current hospice benefit is a poor fit with the nursing home setting, the authors recommend a new benefit that would enable nursing home residents to receive individualized palliative and psychosocial services in addition to rehabilitative services
The four-fermion interaction in D=2,3,4: a nonperturbative treatment
A new nonperturbative approach is used to investigate the Gross-Neveu model
of four fermion interaction in the space-time dimensions 2, 3 and 4, the number
of inner degrees of freedom being a fixed integer. The spontaneous symmetry
breaking is shown to exist in and the running coupling constant is

The unrestricted Skyrme-tensor time-dependent Hartree-Fock and its application to the nuclear response from spherical to triaxial nuclei
The nuclear time-dependent Hartree-Fock model formulated in the
three-dimensional space,based on the full Skyrme energy density functional and
complemented with the tensor force,is presented for the first time. Full
self-consistency is achieved by the model. The application to the isovector
giant dipole resonance is discussed in the linear limit, ranging from spherical
nuclei (16O, 120Sn) to systems displaying axial or triaxial deformation (24Mg,
28Si, 178Os, 190W, 238U).
Particular attention is paid to the spin-dependent terms from the central
sector of the functional, recently included together with the tensor. They turn
out to be capable of producing a qualitative change on the strength
distribution in this channel. The effect on the deformation properties is also
discussed. The quantitative effects on the linear response are small and,
overall, the giant dipole energy remains unaffected.
Calculations are compared to predictions from the (quasi)-particle random
phase approximation and experimental data where available, finding good
agreement
Aircraft control system
An aircraft control system is described which is particularly suited to rotary wing aircraft. Longitudinal acceleration and course rate commands are derived from a manual control stick to control translational velocity of the aircraft along a flight path. In the collective channel the manual controls provide vertical velocity commands. In the yaw channel the manual controls provide sideslip or heading rate commands at high or low airspeeds, respectively. The control system permits pilots to fly along prescribed flight paths in a precise manner with relatively low work load
Simulation studies of air transport operational problems
An experimental evaluation of the monitored approach procedure for conducting low visibility instrument approaches is described. Four airline crews each flew 16 approaches using the monitored procedure and 16 using a modified standard procedure in a DC-10 simulator under various conditions of visibility, wind shear and turbulence, and radar vectoring scenarios. In terms of system measures of aircrew performance, no major differences were found. Pilot opinion data indicate that there are some desirable characteristics of the monitored procedure, particularly with reference to the increased role of the flight engineer in conducting low visibility approaches. Rationale for developing approach procedures is discussed
