Enhancing Tc in field-doped Fullerenes by applying uniaxial stress
Capitalizing on the two-dimensional nature of superconductivity in
field-effect doped C60, we show that it should be possible to increase the
transition temperature Tc by applying uniaxial stress perpendicular to the gate
electrode. This method not only holds the promise of substantially enhancing Tc
(by about 30 K per GPa), but also provides a sensitive check of the current
understanding of superconductivity in the doped Fullerenes.Comment: 3 pages RevTe
A Search for Very Active Stars in the Galaxy
We report the first results of a systematic search near the plane of the
Galaxy for the so called very active stars (VAS), which are characterized by a
hard X-ray spectrum and activity in the radio domain. Candidates with hard
X-ray binary-like spectra have been selected from the Bright ROSAT Source
Catalogue in the Zone of Avoidance () and were tentatively
identified in GB6/PMM/NVSS radio surveys. Most of them were observed with the
ATCA and VLA. Precise radio coordinates have led to unambiguous optical
identification for 60 candidates, and a sub-sample of five of themhas been
observed with the VLT. Also some discovery and confirmatory spectra were
obtained with the AAT (4-m) and BTA (6-m). Spectroscopy with moderate
dispersion, made with the FORS1 spectrograph of the VLT has revealed two
stellar objects (one of them, VASC J1628-41, is definitivelya binary VAS), one
new AGN and two featureless spectrum sources. One of these objects, VASC
J1353-66, shows a marginal evidence of proper motion, which, if confirmed,
would imply the discovery of a new type of galactic source.Comment: to appear in A&A, 7 figure
Duality Invariant M-theory: Gauged supergravities and Scherk-Schwarz reductions
We consider the reduction of the duality invariant approach to M-theory by a
U-duality group valued Scherk-Schwarz twist. The result is to produce
potentials for gauged supergravities that are normally associated with
non-geometric compactifications. The local symmetry reduces to gauge
transformations with the gaugings exactly matching those of the embedding
tensor approach to gauged supergravity. Importantly, this approach now includes
a nontrivial dependence of the fields on the extra coordinates of the extended
space.Comment: 22 pages Latex; v2: typos corrected and references adde
The local symmetries of M-theory and their formulation in generalised geometry
In the doubled field theory approach to string theory, the T-duality group is
promoted to a manifest symmetry at the expense of replacing ordinary Riemannian
geometry with generalised geometry on a doubled space. The local symmetries are
then given by a generalised Lie derivative and its associated algebra. This
paper constructs an analogous structure for M-theory. A crucial by-product of
this is the derivation of the physical section condition for M-theory
formulated in an extended space.Comment: 20 pages, v2: Author Name corrected, v3: typos correcte
Upland rice under zero tillage in Brazil: Cultivar performance and soil management for early vigour improvement.
In Brazil, upland (rainfed) rice aka aerobic rice is planted on approximately 1.5 M ha. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was a common pioneer crop after deforestation with almost 4.5 M ha planted each year. The average grain yield of cultivars like Araguaia and Guarani ranged from 2.0 to 3.0 t ha-1, but the grain type (long and wide with low amylose content) resulted in a sticky rice after cooking. It was rejected by the consumers once long and slender, non-sticky irrigated rice was introduced in the market. Studies were initiated to tackle those problems, as an attempt to enable the cultivation of upland rice under ZT in acid tropical soils in the Brazilian Cerrado and Amazonia biome. Field experiments started for investigating the potential of modern upland rice cultivars at different row spacing to enable the use of the same ZT planter used for soybean (40-cm spacing), the interaction of seed chemical treatment and furrow compaction on rice plant mortality by termites in the early growth stages, and the effect of cover crops on mulching and soil NO3- and NH4+.
