    Non-Intrusive Electrical Load Monitoring System Applying Neural Networks with Combined Steady-State Electrical Variables

    This paper presents a full electrical load identification model that considers steady-state parameters obtained easily from low-cost residential smart meters. The model was developed using neural networks including combinations of real power, current, impedance and admittance variables to identify the best input parameters. The monitoring model was improved by training one neural network to identify changing events and another neural network to identify the load state. The proposed model was tested using two different groups of residential loads: residential appliances measured in the laboratory and a public database of electrical measurements. The results show that the impedance model and a feedforward neural network achieved the best performance to characterise the load. In addition, when combining the different input parameters, those that consider impedance as an input parameter produced better results. The output provides simultaneous information about the operation state of all the loads before and after an event occurs

    Citizens’ media in latin america

    There are several reasons that explain why community and citizens’ media are so widespread and popular in Latin America. This chapter offers a series of short vignettes set in Colombia that describe the intricate processes that developed there since the 1920s and simultaneously elsewhere across Latin America, spreading the notion that agency and participation are everyone’s right. These vignettes highlight why understanding community and citizens’ media in Latin America requires recognizing the long history of radical politics in the region and the wide dissemination of leftist ideologies that popularized notions of popular participation and political agency as rights. The chapter also brings into dialogue the work of Peruvian scholar Rosa María Alfaro, who was instrumental in transforming communication scholarship in Latin America and is an early example of citizens’ media in Latin America. Including a translation of this key early text by Alfaro was a challenge, because the field is vast and there is so much material that has never been translated into English or published outside of Latin America. In selecting the following piece, the intention is to maintain the centrality of both theory and practice and to show how citizens’ media in Latin America cannot be understood unless we take into consideration what social movements and grassroots communities did in the region and how Latin American scholars thought about the region

    Early Science with the Large Millimetre Telescope: Molecules in the Extreme Outflow of a proto-Planetary Nebula

    Extremely high velocity emission likely related to jets is known to occur in some proto-Planetary Nebulae. However, the molecular complexity of this kinematic component is largely unknown. We observed the known extreme outflow from the proto-Planetary Nebula IRAS 16342-3814, a prototype water fountain, in the full frequency range from 73 to 111 GHz with the RSR receiver on the Large Millimetre Telescope. We detected the molecules SiO, HCN, SO, and 13^{13}CO. All molecular transitions, with the exception of the latter are detected for the first time in this source, and all present emission with velocities up to a few hundred km s1^{-1}. IRAS 16342-3814 is therefore the only source of this kind presenting extreme outflow activity simultaneously in all these molecules, with SO and SiO emission showing the highest velocities found of these species in proto-Planetary Nebulae. To be confirmed is a tentative weak SO component with a FWHM \sim 700 km s1^{-1}. The extreme outflow gas consists of dense gas (nH2>_{\rm H_2} > 104.8^{4.8}--105.7^{5.7} cm3^{-3}), with a mass larger than \sim 0.02--0.15 M_{\odot}. The relatively high abundances of SiO and SO may be an indication of an oxygen-rich extreme high velocity gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Letter

    Interspecies DNA acquisition by a naturally competent Acinetobacter baumannii strain

    The human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii possesses high genetic plasticity and frequently acquires antimicrobial resistance genes. Here we investigated the role of natural transformation in these processes. Genomic DNA from different sources, including from carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, was mixed with A. baumannii A118 cells. Selected transformants were analysed by whole-genome sequencing. In addition, bioinformatics analyses and in silico gene flow prediction were also performed to support the experimental results. Transformant strains included some that became resistant to carbapenems or changed their antimicrobial susceptibility profile. Foreign DNA acquisition was confirmed by whole-genome analysis. The acquired DNA most frequently identified corresponded to mobile genetic elements, antimicrobial resistance genes and operons involved in metabolism. Bioinformatics analyses and in silico gene flow prediction showed continued exchange of genetic material between A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae when they share the same habitat. Natural transformation plays an important role in the plasticity of A. baumannii and concomitantly in the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains.Fil: Traglia, German Matias.     Insight into the conformational space of n-benzyl-n-(furan-2-ylmethyl)acetamide by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations

    In this study, the conformational behavior of N-benzyl-N-(furan-2-ylmethyl) acetamide in chloroform was addressed by using a combined experimental/theoretical strategy using NMR spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. The 1H and 13C one‑dimensional NMR spectra, as well as the two-dimensional HSQC-DEPT and HMBC-DEPT NMR spectra, evinced the presence of a hindered cis(E)-trans(Z) rotational equilibrium in solution. DFT calculations were performed at different theoretical levels using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) and predicted nine (four Z and five E structures) stable conformations. The interconversion dynamics among the different confirmations were established in terms of four different rotational equilibria in CDCl3. The chemical shifts in the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of the compound are similar to the values calculated for the two most abundant conformational equilibria at room temperature, one caused by two Z rotamers and the other by two E rotamers. The compound was also characterized for the first time by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and GC/MS spectrometry. Additionally, several acylation methodologies for synthesizing the title compound from N-benzyl-1-(furan-2-yl)methanamine were tested which resulted in high yields (> 90%) under very convenient conditions (10 min, at room temperature).Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Ciencias Aplicada

    Endoscopic Ultrasound Image Synthesis Using a Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Network

    Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a challenging procedure that requires skill, both in endoscopy and ultrasound image interpretation. Classification of key anatomical landmarks visible on EUS images can assist the gastroenterologist during navigation. Current applications of deep learning have shown the ability to automatically classify ultrasound images with high accuracy. However, these techniques require a large amount of labelled data which is time consuming to obtain, and in the case of EUS, is also a difficult task to perform retrospectively due to the lack of 3D context. In this paper, we propose the use of an image-to-image translation method to create synthetic EUS (sEUS) images from CT data, that can be used as a data augmentation strategy when EUS data is scarce. We train a cycle-consistent adversarial network with unpaired EUS images and CT slices extracted in a manner such that they mimic plausible EUS views, to generate sEUS images from the pancreas, aorta and liver. We quantitatively evaluate the use of sEUS images in a classification sub-task and assess the Fréchet Inception Distance. We show that synthetic data, obtained from CT data, imposes only a minor classification accuracy penalty and may help generalization to new unseen patients.     Early Science with the Large Millimeter Telescope: an energy-driven wind revealed by massive molecular and fast X-ray outflows in the Seyfert Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544

    We report on the coexistence of powerful gas outflows observed in millimeter and X-ray data of the Radio-Loud Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxy IRAS 17020+4544. Thanks to the large collecting power of the Large Millimeter Telescope, a prominent line arising from the 12CO(1-0) transition was revealed in recent observations of this source. The complex profile is composed by a narrow double-peak line and a broad wing. While the double-peak structure may be arising in a disk of molecular material, the broad wing is interpreted as the signature of a massive outflow of molecular gas with an approximate bulk velocity of -660 km/s. This molecular wind is likely associated to a multi-component X-ray Ultra-Fast Outflow with velocities reaching up to ~0.1c and column densities in the range 10^{21-23.9} cm^-2 that was reported in the source prior to the LMT observations. The momentum load estimated in the two gas phases indicates that within the observational uncertainties the outflow is consistent with being propagating through the galaxy and sweeping up the gas while conserving its energy. This scenario, which has been often postulated as a viable mechanism of how AGN feedback takes place, has so far been observed only in ULIRGs sources. IRAS 17020+4544 with bolometric and infrared luminosity respectively of 5X10^{44} erg/s and 1.05X10^{11} L_sun appears to be an example of AGN feedback in a NLSy1 Galaxy (a low power AGN). New proprietary multi-wavelength data recently obtained on this source will allow us to corroborate the proposed hypothesis.Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Letters, 9 pages, 4 figure
