    Fermiology and electronic homogeneity of the superconducting overdoped cuprate Tl-2201 revealed by quantum oscillations

    We report an angular quantum oscillation study of Tl_2Ba_2CuO_{6+delta} for two different doping levels (Tc = 10K and 26 K) and determine the Fermi surface size and topology in considerable detail. Our results show that Fermi liquid behavior is not confined to the edge of the superconducting dome and is robust up to at least T_c^{max}/3.5. Superconductivity is found to survive up to a larger doping p_c = 0.31 than in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4. Our data imply that electronic inhomogeneity does not play a significant role in the loss of superconductivity and superfluid density in overdoped cuprates, and point towards a purely magnetic or electronic pairing mechanismComment: 4 page

    Evidence for a charge Kondo effect in Pb(1-x)Tl(x)Te from measurements of thermoelectric power

    We report measurements of the thermoelectric power (TEP) for a series of Pb(1-x)Tl(x)Te crystals with x = 0.0 to 1.3%. Although the TEP is very large for x = 0.0, using a single band analysis based on older work for dilute magnetic alloys we do find evidence for a Kondo contribution of 11 - 18 uV/K. This analysis suggests that Tk is ~ 50 - 70 K, a factor 10 higher than previously thought.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Evidence of spin-density-wave order in RFeAsO from measurements of thermoelectric power

    Data on the magneto-thermopower and specific heat of three compounds belonging to '1111' oxypnictides family are reported. One specimen (SmAsFeO0.8F0.2) is a superconductor with Tc = 53 K, while two others (SmAsFeO and NdAsFeO) are nonsuperconducting parent compounds. Our results confirm that spin density wave (SDW) order is present in SmAsFeO and NdAsFeO. In these two samples a strict connection between the thermoelectric power and electronic specific heat is found in the vicinity of SDW transition, what indicates that the chemical potential of charge carriers strongly depends on temperature in this region. Low temperature data suggest presence of significant contribution magnon-drag to the thermoelectric power.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures; adjusted to referees' suggestions; to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors confined by Fermi surface topology

    The properties of cuprate high-temperature superconductors are largely shaped by competing phases whose nature is often a mystery. Chiefly among them is the pseudogap phase, which sets in at a doping pp^* that is material-dependent. What determines pp^* is currently an open question. Here we show that the pseudogap cannot open on an electron-like Fermi surface, and can only exist below the doping pFSp_{FS} at which the large Fermi surface goes from hole-like to electron-like, so that pp^* \leq pFSp_{FS}. We derive this result from high-magnetic-field transport measurements in La1.6x_{1.6-x}Nd0.4_{0.4}Srx_xCuO4_4 under pressure, which reveal a large and unexpected shift of pp^* with pressure, driven by a corresponding shift in pFSp_{FS}. This necessary condition for pseudogap formation, imposed by details of the Fermi surface, is a strong constraint for theories of the pseudogap phase. Our finding that pp^* can be tuned with a modest pressure opens a new route for experimental studies of the pseudogap.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 7 supplemental figure

    EQ-5D in skin conditions: an assessment of validity and responsiveness

    Aims and objectives This systematic literature review aims to assess the reliability, validity and responsiveness of three widely used generic preference-based measures of health-related quality of life (HRQL), i.e., EQ-5D, Health Utility Index 3 (HUI3) and SF-6D in patients with skin conditions. Methods A systematic search was conducted to identify studies reporting health state utility values obtained using EQ-5D, SF-6D, or HUI3 alongside other HRQL measures or clinical indices for patients with skin conditions. Data on test-retest analysis for reliability, known group differences or correlation and regression analyses for validity, and change over time or responsiveness indices analysis were extracted and reviewed. Results A total of 16 papers reporting EQ-5D utilities in people with skin conditions were included in the final review. No papers for SF-6D and HUI3 were found. Evidence of reliability was not found for any of these measures. The majority of studies included in the review (12 out of 16) examined patients with plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis and the remaining four studies examined patients with either acne, hidradenitis suppurativa, hand eczema, or venous leg ulcers. The findings were generally positive in terms of performance of EQ-5D. Six studies showed that EQ-5D was able to reflect differences between severity groups and only one reported differences that were not statistically significant. Four studies found that EQ-5D detected differences between patients and the general population, and differences were statistically different for three of them. Further, moderate-to-strong correlation coefficients were found between EQ-5D and other skin-specific HRQL measures in four studies. Eight studies showed that EQ-5D was able to detect change in HRQL appropriately over time and the changes were statistically significant in seven studies. Conclusions Overall, the validity and responsiveness of the EQ-5D was found to be good in people with skin diseases, especially plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. No evidence on SF-6D and HUI3 was available to enable any judgments to be made on their performance

    Decreased mannan-binding lectin level in adults with hypopituitarism; dependence on appropriate hormone replacement therapies

    BackgroundMannan-binding lectin (MBL) is a main component of the lectin pathway of the complement system. Although there are some studies showing links between endocrine and immune systems, the ones concerning hypopituitarism are limited. The aim of this study was to check whether there is any association between blood MBL level and pituitary hormone deficiencies and whether this relationship is affected by appropriate hormone replacement therapies.MethodsOne hundred and twenty (120) inpatients, aged 18-92, were divided into two main groups, i.e. control individuals (21/120) and patients with pituitary diseases (99/120). The latter were diagnosed either with hypopituitarism (n=42) or with other pituitary diseases (not causing hypopituitarism) (n=57). Additionally, hypopituitary patients on appropriate replacement therapies (compensated hypopituitarism) were compared to patients on inappropriate replacement therapies (non-compensated hypopituitarism). Several parameters in blood serum were measured, including MBL level, pituitary and peripheral hormones and different biochemical parameters.ResultsSerum MBL level was significantly lower in patients with hypopituitarism comparing to controls (1358.97 ± 244.68 vs. 3199.30 ± 508.46, p<0.001) and comparing to other pituitary diseases (1358.97 ± 244.68 vs. 2388.12 ± 294.99, p=0.015) and this association was confirmed by univariate regression analysis. We evaluated the distribution of patients with relation to MBL level; there was a clear difference in this distribution between control individuals (among whom no subjects had MBL level <500 ng/mL) and patients with hypopituitarism (among whom 43% of patients had MBL level <500 ng/mL). Moreover, patients with non-compensated hypopituitarism had lower mean and median MBL levels comparing to patients with compensated hypopituitarism (1055.38 ± 245.73 vs. 2300.09 ± 579.93, p=0.027; 488.51 vs. 1951.89, p=0.009, respectively) and this association was confirmed in univariate regression analysis. However, mean and median MBL levels in patients with compensated hypopituitarism vs. controls did not differ significantly (2300.09 ± 579.93 vs. 3199.30 ± 508.46, p=0.294; 1951.90 vs. 2329.16; p=0.301, respectively).ConclusionHypopituitarism in adults is associated with a decreased blood concentration of mannan-binding lectin, a phenomenon which does not exist in hypopituitary patients on the appropriate hormone replacement therapies. Therefore measurement of mannan-binding lectin level in patients with hypopituitarism may be considered as a parameter contributing to adjust optimal doses of hormone replacement therapies

    Bose-Einstein condensation of strongly correlated electrons and phonons in cuprate superconductors

    The long-range Froehlich electron-phonon interaction has been identified as the most essential for pairing in high-temperature superconductors owing to poor screening, as is now confirmed by optical, isotope substitution, recent photoemission and some other measurements. I argue that low energy physics in cuprate superconductors is that of superlight small bipolarons, which are real-space hole pairs dressed by phonons in doped charge-transfer Mott insulators. They are itinerant quasiparticles existing in the Bloch states at low temperatures as also confirmed by continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo algorithm (CTQMC) fully taking into account realistic Coulomb and long-range Froehlich interactions. Here I suggest that a parameter-free evaluation of Tc, unusual upper critical fields, the normal state Nernst effect, diamagnetism, the Hall-Lorenz numbers and giant proximity effects strongly support the three-dimensional (3D) Bose-Einstein condensation of mobile small bipolarons with zero off-diagonal order parameter above the resistive critical temperature Tc at variance with phase fluctuation scenarios of cuprates.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, to appear in the special volume of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matte

    Development of a PbWO4 Detector for Single-Shot Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy at the GBAR Experiment

    We have developed a PbWO4 (PWO) detector with a large dynamic range to measure the intensity of a positron beam and the absolute density of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) cloud it creates. A simulation study shows that a setup based on such detectors may be used to determine the angular distribution of the emission and reflection of o-Ps to reduce part of the uncertainties of the measurement. These will allow to improve the precision in the measurement of the cross-section for the (anti)hydrogen formation by (anti)proton-positronium charge exchange and to optimize the yield of antihydrogen ion which is an essential parameter in the GBAR experiment
