Short Gamma-Ray Bursts with Extended Emission Observed with Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM
Some short GRBs are followed by longer extended emission, lasting anywhere
from ~10 to ~100 s. These short GRBs with extended emission (EE) can possess
observational characteristics of both short and long GRBs (as represented by
GRB 060614), and the traditional classification based on the observed duration
places some of them in the long GRB class. While GRBs with EE pose a challenge
to the compact binary merger scenario, they may therefore provide an important
link between short and long duration events. To identify the population of GRBs
with EE regardless of their initial classifications, we performed a systematic
search of short GRBs with EE using all available data (up to February 2013) of
both Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM. The search identified 16 BAT and 14 GBM detected
GRBs with EE, several of which are common events observed with both detectors.
We investigated their spectral and temporal properties for both the spikes and
the EE, and examined correlations among these parameters. Here we present the
results of the systematic search as well as the properties of the identified
events. Finally, their properties are also compared with short GRBs with EE
observed with BATSE, identified through our previous search effort. We found
several strong correlations among parameters, especially when all of the
samples were combined. Based on our results, a possible progenitor scenario of

Half-Skyrmions and Spike-Vortex Solutions of Two-Component Nonlinear Schrodinger Systems
Recently, skyrmions with integer topological charges have been observed
numerically but have not yet been shown rigorously on two-component systems of
nonlinear Schrodinger equations (NLSE) describing a binary mixture of
Bose-Einstein condensates. Besides, half-skyrmions characterized by
half-integer topological charges can also be found in the nonlinear sigma model
which is a model of the Bose-Einstein condensate of the Schwinger bosons. Here
we prove rigorously the existence of half-skyrmions which may come from a new
type of soliton solutions called spike-vortex solutions of two-component
systems of NLSE on the entire plane. These spike-vortex solutions having spikes
in one component and a vortex in the other component may form half-skyrmions.

Three-region inequalities for the second order elliptic equation with discontinuous coefficients and size estimate
In this paper, we would like to derive a quantitative uniqueness estimate,
the three-region inequality, for the second order elliptic equation with jump
discontinuous coefficients. The derivation of the inequality relies on the
Carleman estimate proved in our previous work. We then apply the three-region

Fractal scattering dynamics of the three-dimensional HOCl molecule
We compare the 2D and 3D classical fractal scattering dynamics of Cl and HO for energies just above dissociation of the HOCl molecule, using a realistic potential energy surface for the HOCl molecule and techniques developed to analyze 3D chaotic scattering processes. For parameter regimes where the HO dimer initially has small vibrational energy, only small intervals of initial conditions show fractal scattering behavior and the scattering process is well described by a 2D model. For parameter regimes where the HO dimer initially has large vibrational energy, the scattering process is fully 3D and is dominated by fractal behavior.Robert A. Use of Antihypertensive Agents and Association With Risk of Adverse Outcomes in Chronic Kidney Disease: Focus on Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers.
Background Our objective was to determine patterns of antihypertensive agent use by stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to evaluate the association between different classes of antihypertensive agents with nonrenal outcomes, especially in advanced CKD . Methods and Results We studied 3939 participants of the CRIC (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort) study. Predictors were time-dependent angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker , β-blocker, and calcium channel blocker use (versus nonuse of agents in each class). Outcomes were adjudicated heart failure events or death. Adjusted Cox models were used to determine the association between predictors and outcomes. We also examined whether the associations differed based on the severity of CKD (early [stage 2-3 CKD ] versus advanced disease [stage 4-5 CKD ]). During median follow-up of 7.5 years, renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor use plateaued during CKD stage 3 (75%) and declined to 37% by stage 5, while β-blocker, calcium channel blocker, and diuretic use increased steadily with advancing CKD . Renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitor use was associated with lower risk of heart failure (hazard ratio, 0.79; 95% confidence interval, 0.67-0.97) and death (hazard ratio, 0.78; 95% confidence interval, 0.67-0.90), regardless of severity of CKD . Calcium channel blocker use was not associated with risk of heart failure or death, regardless of the severity of CKD . β-Blocker use was associated with higher risk of heart failure (hazard ratio, 1.62; 95% confidence interval, 1.29-2.04) and death (hazard ratio, 1.22; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.43), especially during early CKD ( P<0.05 for interaction). Conclusions Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker use decreased, while use of other agents increased with advancing CKD . Use of agents besides angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers may be associated with suboptimal outcomes in patients with CKD
