    On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra+^+ Ions

    As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one single trapped Ra+^+ ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with on-line produced short-lived 212,213,214^{212,213,214}Ra+^+ ions. The isotope shift of the 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P3/2_{3/2} transitions and the hyperfine structure constant of the 7\,^2S1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2} states in 213^{213}Ra+^+ were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory. A lower limit of 232(4)232(4) ms for the lifetime of the metastable 6\,^2D5/2_{5/2} state was measured by optical shelving.Comment: 4.2 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

    Magnetoresistance of a 2-dimensional electron gas in a random magnetic field

    We report magnetoresistance measurements on a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) made from a high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, where the externally applied magnetic field was expelled from regions of the semiconductor by means of superconducting lead grains randomly distributed on the surface of the sample. A theoretical explanation in excellent agreement with the experiment is given within the framework of the semiclassical Boltzmann equation.Comment: REVTEX 3.0, 11 pages, 3 Postscript figures appended.     Laser spectroscopy of short-lived radium isotopes in a linear Paul trap has been performed. The isotope shifts of the 6d\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\, - 7p\,^2P1/2_{1/2}\, transition in 209214^{209-214}Ra+^+ were measured, which are sensitive to the short range part of the atomic wavefunctions. The results are essential experimental input for improving the precision of atomic structure calculation.     Development of a thermal ionizer as ion catcher

    An effective ion catcher is an important part of a radioactive beam facility that is based on in-flight production. The catcher stops fast radioactive products and emits them as singly charged slow ions. Current ion catchers are based on stopping in He and H2_2 gas. However, with increasing intensity of the secondary beam the amount of ion-electron pairs created eventually prevents the electromagnetic extraction of the radioactive ions from the gas cell. In contrast, such limitations are not present in thermal ionizers used with the ISOL production technique. Therefore, at least for alkaline and alkaline earth elements, a thermal ionizer should then be preferred. An important use of the TRIμ\muP facility will be for precision measurements using atom traps. Atom trapping is particularly possible for alkaline and alkaline earth isotopes. The facility can produce up to 109^9 s1^{-1} of various Na isotopes with the in-flight method. Therefore, we have built and tested a thermal ionizer.     Measurement of the half-life of the T=12\frac{1}{2} mirror decay of 19^{19}Ne and its implication on physics beyond the standard model

    The 12+12+\frac{1}{2}^+ \rightarrow \frac{1}{2}^+ superallowed mixed mirror decay of 19^{19}Ne to 19^{19}F is excellently suited for high precision studies of the weak interaction. However, there is some disagreement on the value of the half-life. In a new measurement we have determined this quantity to be T1/2T_{1/2} = 17.2832±0.0051(stat)17.2832 \pm 0.0051_{(stat)} ±0.0066(sys)\pm 0.0066_{(sys)} s, which differs from the previous world average by 3 standard deviations.     A randomized single and multiple ascending dose study in healthy volunteers of LTI-291, a centrally penetrant glucocerebrosidase activator

    Aims A mutation in the GBA1 gene is the most common genetic risk factor for developing Parkinson's disease. GBA1 encodes the lysosomal enzyme glucosylceramidase beta (glucocerebrosidase, GCase) and mutations decrease enzyme activity. LTI-291 is an allosteric modulator of GCase, enhancing its activity. These first-in-human studies evaluated the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of single and multiple ascending doses of LTI-291 in healthy volunteers.Methods In the single ascending dose (SAD) study, 40 healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to LTI-291 (n = 8 per dose level) or placebo (n = 2 per dose level). Single doses of 3, 10, 30 and 90 mg LTI-291 were investigated. In the multiple ascending dose (MAD) study, 40 healthy middle-aged or elderly volunteers were randomly assigned to LTI-291 (n = 8 per dose level) or placebo (n = 2 per dose level). Fourteen consecutive daily doses of 3, 10, 30 and 60 mg LTI-291 or placebo were administered. In both the SAD and MAD studies, glycosphingolipid levels were measured and a test battery of neurocognitive tasks was performed.Results LTI-291 was generally well tolerated and no deaths or treatment-related SAEs occurred and no subject withdrew from a study due to AEs. C-max, AUC(0-24) and AUC(0-inf) increased in a dose proportional manner. The median half-life was 28.0 hours after multiple dosing. No dose-dependent glycosphingolipid changes occurred. No neurocognitive adverse effects were detected.Conclusions These first-in-human studies demonstrated that LTI-291 was well tolerated when given orally once daily for 14 consecutive days.     Phenotypic Dissection of Bone Mineral Density Reveals Skeletal Site Specificity and Facilitates the Identification of Novel Loci in the Genetic Regulation of Bone Mass Attainment

    Heritability of bone mineral density (BMD) varies across skeletal sites, reflecting different relative contributions of genetic and environmental influences. To quantify the degree to which common genetic variants tag and environmental factors influence BMD, at different sites, we estimated the genetic (rg) and residual (re) correlations between BMD measured at the upper limbs (UL-BMD), lower limbs (LL-BMD) and skull (SK-BMD), using total-body DXA scans of ~4,890 participants recruited by the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and their Children (ALSPAC). Point estimates of rg indicated that appendicular sites have a greater proportion of shared genetic architecture (LL-/UL-BMD rg = 0.78) between them, than with the skull (UL-/SK-BMD rg = 0.58 and LL-/SK-BMD rg = 0.43). Likewise, the residual correlation between BMD at appendicular sites (re = 0.55) was higher than the residual correlation between SK-BMD and BMD at appendicular sites (re = 0.20-0.24).
