    Encapsulated formulation of the Selective Frequency Damping method

    We present an alternative "encapsulated" formulation of the Selective Frequency Damping method for finding unstable equilibria of dynamical systems, which is particularly useful when analysing the stability of fluid flows. The formulation makes use of splitting methods, which means that it can be wrapped around an existing time-stepping code as a "black box". The method is first applied to a scalar problem in order to analyse its stability and highlight the roles of the control coefficient χ\chi and the filter width Δ\Delta in the convergence (or not) towards the steady-state. Then the steady-state of the incompressible flow past a two-dimensional cylinder at Re=100Re=100, obtained with a code which implements the spectral/hp element method, is presented

    Improved surface quality of anisotropically etched silicon {111} planes for mm-scale integrated optics

    We have studied the surface quality of millimeter-scale optical mirrors produced by etching CZ and FZ silicon wafers in potassium hydroxide to expose the {111}\{111\} planes. We find that the FZ surfaces have four times lower noise power at spatial frequencies up to 500 mm−1500\, {mm}^{-1}. We conclude that mirrors made using FZ wafers have higher optical quality

    Characteristics of Gamma-Ray Loud Blazars in the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey

    The radio properties of blazars detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have been observed as part of the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey (VIPS). This large, flux-limited sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) provides insights into the mechanism that produces strong gamma-ray emission. At lower flux levels, radio flux density does not directly correlate with gamma-ray flux. We find that the LAT-detected BL Lacs tend to be similar to the non-LAT BL Lacs, but that the LAT-detected FSRQs are often significantly different from the non-LAT FSRQs. The differences between the gamma-ray loud and quiet FSRQs can be explained by Doppler boosting; these objects appear to require larger Doppler factors than those of the BL Lacs. It is possible that the gamma-ray loud FSRQs are fundamentally different from the gamma-ray quiet FSRQs.     Statistical overdensities of radio sources in the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalogue have proven to be signposts to high-redshift clusters of galaxies. A similar search for overdensities has been carried out in the Sydney University Molonglo Sky Survey (SUMSS), which is closely matched in resolution and frequency to the NVSS.     This paper provides a full geometric development of a new technique called un-reduction, for dealing with dynamics and optimal control problems posed on spaces that are unwieldy for numerical implementation. The technique, which was originally concieved for an application to image dynamics, uses Lagrangian reduction by symmetry in reverse.
