Thermal decoupling and the smallest subhalo mass in dark matter models with Sommerfeld-enhanced annihilation rates
We consider dark matter consisting of weakly interacting massive particles
(WIMPs) and revisit in detail its thermal evolution in the early universe, with
a particular focus on models where the annihilation rate is enhanced by the
Sommerfeld effect. After chemical decoupling, or freeze-out, dark matter no
longer annihilates but is still kept in local thermal equilibrium due to
scattering events with the much more abundant standard model particles. During
kinetic decoupling, even these processes stop to be effective, which eventually
sets the scale for a small-scale cutoff in the matter density fluctuations.
Afterwards, the WIMP temperature decreases more quickly than the heat bath
temperature, which causes dark matter to reenter an era of annihilation if the
cross-section is enhanced by the Sommerfeld effect. Here, we give a detailed
and self-consistent description of these effects. As an application, we
consider the phenomenology of simple leptophilic models that have been
discussed in the literature and find that the relic abundance can be affected
by as much two orders of magnitude or more. We also compute the mass of the
smallest dark matter subhalos in these models and find it to be in the range of
about 10^{-10} to 10 solar masses; even much larger cutoff values are possible
if the WIMPs couple to force carriers lighter than about 100 MeV. We point out
that a precise determination of the cutoff mass allows to infer new limits on
the model parameters, in particular from gamma-ray observations of galaxy
clusters, that are highly complementary to existing constraints from g-2 or

Recent Progress in Acoustic Travel-Time Tomography of the Atmospheric Surface Layer
Acoustic tomography of the atmospheric surface layer (ASL) is based on measurements of the travel times of sound propagation between sources and receivers which constitute a tomography array. Then, the temperature and wind velocity fields inside the tomographic volume or area are reconstructed using different inverse algorithms. Improved knowledge of these fields is important in many practical applications. Tomography has certain advantages in comparison with currently used instrumentation for measurement of the temperature and wind velocity. In this paper, a short historical overview of acoustic tomography of the atmosphere is presented. The main emphasis is on recent progress in acoustic tomography of the ASL. The tomography arrays that have been used so far are discussed. Inverse algorithms for reconstruction of the temperature and wind velocity fields from the travel times are reviewed. Some results in numerical simulations of acoustic tomography of the ASL and reconstruction of the turbulence fields in tomography experiments are presented and discussed. Zusammenfassung Die akustische Tomographie der atmosph¨arischen Bodenschicht basiert auf Messungen der Laufzeit von Schallwellen zwischen Sendern und Empf¨angern, welche ein tomographisches Messfeld bilden. Anschließend werden dann die Temperatur- und Windgeschwindigkeitsfelder innerhalb eines tomographischen Volumens oder einer Fl¨ache rekonstruiert, wobei verschiedene inverse Algorithmen angewendet werden k¨onnen. Eine verbesserte Kenntnis dieser meteorologischen Felder ist f ¨ur viele praktische Anwendungen bedeutsam. Tomographische Verfahren haben bestimmte Vorteile gegen¨uber den momentan genutzten Messverfahren f ¨ur die Temperatur und Windgeschwindigkeit. In dieser Ver ¨offentlichung wird ein kurzer ¨Uberblick zur Entwicklung der akustischen Tomographie der Atmosph¨are pr¨asentiert. Der Schwerpunkt der Arbeit liegt auf der Darstellung des aktuellen Fortschritts in der akustischen Tomographie der atmosph¨arischen Bodenschicht. Die bisher genutzten tomographischen Messfelder werden vorgestellt. Early Glycemic Control in Critically Ill Emergency Department Patients: Pilot Trial
Objective: Glycemic control in the critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patient has been shown to improve morbidity and mortality. We sought to investigate the effect of early glycemic control in critically ill emergency department (ED) patients in a small pilot trial.Methods: Adult non-trauma, non-pregnant ED patients presenting to a university tertiary referral center and identified as critically ill were eligible for enrollment on a convenience basis. Critical illness was determined upon assignment for ICU admission. Patients were randomized to either ED standard care or glycemic control. Glycemic control involved use of an insulin drip to maintain blood glucose levels between 80-140 mg/dL. Glycemic control continued until ED discharge. Standard patients were managed at ED attending physician discretion. We assessed severity of illness by calculation of APACHE II score. The primary endpoint was in-hospital mortality. Secondary endpoints included vasopressor requirement, hospital length of stay, and mechanical ventilation requirement.Results: Fifty patients were randomized, 24 to the glycemic group and 26 to the standard care cohort. Four of the 24 patients (17%) in the treatment arm did not receive insulin despite protocol requirements. While receiving insulin, three of 24 patients (13%) had an episode of hypoglycemia. By chance, the patients in the treatment group had a trend toward higher acuity by APACHE II scores. Patient mortality and morbidity were similar despite the acuity difference.Conclusion: There was no difference in morbidity and mortality between the two groups. The benefit of glycemic control may be subject to source of illness and to degree of glycemic control, or have no effect. Such questions bear future investigation. Development and validation of instruments measuring body image and body weight dissatisfaction in South African mothers and their daughters
Objective We sought to validate questionnaires concerning body image perception, body size dissatisfaction and weight-related beliefs in multi-ethnic South African mothers and their daughters. Settings and subjects: Girls attending primary school (ages 9-12 years, n = 333) and their mothers (n = 204) were interviewed regarding their demographics and body image. Weight, height and skinfold thicknesses were measured. Body image questions and body mass index (BMI) were compared with silhouettes adapted from the Pathways Study for girls and Stunkard\u27s body image figures for mothers. A Feel-Ideal Difference (FID) index score was created by subtracting the score of the silhouette selected by the participants as \u27Ideal\u27 from the one selected as most closely representing their current appearance or \u27Feel\u27. We hypothesised that a higher FID index score would be associated with greater body size dissatisfaction. Results BMI percentiles in girls (r = 0.46, P \u3c 0.05) and BMI in mothers (r = 0.68, P \u3c 0.05) were positively correlated with the selected silhouettes based on size. Participants who reported feelings of being \u27fat\u27 and those who perceived that their family and friends were more dissatisfied with their body size had significantly higher FID index scores. Scores were lower in black than white girls (all P \u3c 0.05). No differences were found in FID index scores between ethnic groups of mothers. Internal reliability of the \u27thin\u27 and \u27fat\u27 belief constructs for girls was demonstrated by standardised Cronbach\u27s α values ≥ 0.7. Conclusion Silhouettes, FID index, \u27fat\u27 and \u27thin\u27 belief constructs (in girls) are age-appropriate, culturally sensitive and can be used in further intervention studies to understand body image
Circulating and Adipose Tissue Fatty Acid Composition in Black South African Women with Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background and Aims: During positive energy balance, excess lipid storage in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) is associated with increased lipolysis. Elevated circulating fatty acid (FA) concentrations from both SAT lipolysis and dietary fat intake may result in visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation, impairment of glucose metabolism, altogether increasing obesity-associated metabolic risks. We aimed to test the hypothesis that FA composition of red blood cell total phospholipids (RBC-TPL) and SAT is associated with body fat centralisation (VAT/SAT ratio) and insulin sensitivity (SI) in black South African women with obesity. Methods: Participants’ (n = 41) body fat composition and distribution, SI, and RBC-TPL, abdominal and gluteal SAT (gSAT) FA composition (gas-liquid chromatography) were measured. Results: RBC-TPL contained higher proportions of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) than SAT (p < 0.001), which were associated with lower SI (p < 0.05). Mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1)-16 were lower, while poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), and delta-5 and delta-6 desaturase indices were higher in RBC-TPL than SAT (p < 0.001). Interestingly, FA profiles differed between SAT depots with higher SFAs and lower MUFAs, SCD1-16 and SCD1-18 indices in abdominal compared to gluteal SAT (p < 0.01). In both SAT depots, higher SFAs and lower PUFAs (n-3 and n-6) correlated with lower VAT/SAT ratio; and lower PUFAs (n-3 and n-6) and higher total MUFA correlated with higher SI. Conclusion: Our findings confirm the relationships between the FA composition of RBC-TPL and SAT and metabolic risk in black women with obesity, which are dependent on both the FA class, and the tissue type/blood compartment in which they are distributed
Conjugated linoleic acid versus high-oleic acid sunflower oil: effects on energy metabolism, glucose tolerance, blood lipids, appetite and body composition in regularly exercising individuals
The aim of this study was to measure the effects of 12 weeks of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation on body composition, RER, RMR, blood lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity and appetite in exercising, normal-weight persons. In this double-blind, randomised, controlled trial, sixty-two non-obese subjects (twenty-five men, thirty-seven women) received either 3.9 g/d CLA or 3.9 g high-oleic acid sunflower oil for 12 weeks. Prior to and after 12 weeks of supplementation, oral glucose tolerance, blood lipid concentrations, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computerised tomography scans), RMR, resting and exercising RER and appetite were measured. There were no significant effects of CLA on body composition or distribution, RMR, RER or appetite. During the oral glucose tolerance tests, mean plasma insulin concentrations (0, 30, 120 min) were significantly lower (P= 0.04) in women who supplemented with CLA (24.3 (SD 9.7) to 20.4 (SD 8.5) microU/ml) compared to high-oleic acid sunflower oil control (23.7 (SD 9.8) to 26.0 (SD 8.8) microU/ml). Serum NEFA levels in response to oral glucose were attenuated in both men and women in the CLA (P=0.001) compared to control group. However, serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations decreased in both groups and HDL-cholesterol concentrations decreased in women over 12 weeks (P=0.001, P=0.02, P=0.02, respectively). In conclusion, mixed-isomer CLA supplementation had a favourable effect on serum insulin and NEFA response to oral glucose in non-obese, regularly exercising women, but there were no CLA-specific effects on body composition, energy expenditure or appetite
Exercise intervention alters HDL subclass distribution and function in obese women
Background
Obesity is associated with a change in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) function and subclass. Exercise training reduces cardiovascular risk in obese patients. We aimed to explore the effect of an exercise training stimulus on HDL functionality and subclass in obese women.
Methods
Thirty-two obese black South African women were randomly assigned to exercise (combined aerobic and resistance exercise) or control (no exercise) conditions for 12-weeks. Pre- and post-testing included venous blood sampling for analysis of lipid profile and HDL functionality, by measuring cellular cholesterol efflux capacity, reduction in endothelial vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) expression (anti-inflammatory function), paraoxonase (PON) (antioxidative function) and platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) activities (anti-thrombotic function). PON-1 and PAF-AH expression were determined in serum and in isolated HDL using Western blotting. Levels of large, intermediate and small HDL subclasses were measured using the Lipoprint® system.
Results
Exercise training resulted in a decrease in body mass index (− 1.0 ± 0.5% vs + 1.2 ± 0.6%, p = 0.010), PON activity (− 8.7 ± 2.4% vs + 1.1 ± 3.0%, p = 0.021), PAF-AH serum expression (− 22.1 ± 8.0% vs + 16.9 ± 9.8, p = 0.002), and the distribution of small HDL subclasses (− 10.1 ± 5.4% vs + 15.7 ± 6.6%, p = 0.004) compared to controls. Exercise did not alter HDL cellular cholesterol efflux capacity and anti-inflammatory function.
Conclusions
These results demonstrate the potential for exercise training to modify HDL subclass distribution and HDL function in obese women.

A pilot investigation of genetic and epigenetic variation of FKBP5 and response to exercise intervention in African women with obesity
We investigated gluteal (GSAT) and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ASAT) DNA methylation
of FKBP5 in response to a 12-week intervention in African women with obesity, as well as the efect
of the rs1360780 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on FKBP5 methylation, gene expression
and post-exercise training adaptations in obesity and metabolic related parameters. Exercise (n= 19)
participants underwent 12-weeks of supervised aerobic and resistance training while controls
(n= 12) continued their usual behaviours. FKBP5 methylation was measured in GSAT and ASAT using
pyrosequencing. SNP and gene expression analyses were conducted using quantitative real-time
PCR. Exercise training induced FKBP5 hypermethylation at two CpG dinucleotides within intron 7.
When stratifed based on the rs1360780 SNP, participants with the CT genotype displayed FKBP5
hypermethylation in GSAT (p < 0.05), and ASAT displayed in both CC and CT carriers. CC allele
carriers displayed improved cardiorespiratory ftness, insulin sensitivity, gynoid fat mass, and waist
circumference (p < 0.05) in response to exercise training, and these parameters were attenuated in
women with the CT genotype. These fndings provide a basis for future studies in larger cohorts, which
should assess whether FKBP5 methylation and/or genetic variants such as the rs1360780 SNP could
