    Amplitude control of quantum interference

    Usually, the oscillations of interference effects are controlled by relative phases. We show that varying the amplitudes of quantum waves, for instance by changing the reflectivity of beam splitters, can also lead to quantum oscillations and even to Bell violations of local realism. We first study theoretically a generalization of the Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment to arbitrary source numbers and beam splitter transmittivity. We then consider a Bell type experiment with two independent sources, and find strong violations of local realism for arbitrarily large source number NN; for small NN, one operator measures essentially the relative phase of the sources and the other their intensities. Since, experimentally, one can measure the parity of the number of atoms in an optical lattice more easily than the number itself, we assume that the detectors measure parity.Comment: 4 pages; 4 figure

    The bimodal spiral galaxy surface brightness distribution

    We have assessed the significance of Tully and Verheijen's (1997) bimodal Ursa Major Cluster spiral galaxy near-infrared surface brightness distribution, focussing on whether this bimodality is simply an artifact of small number statistics. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov style of significance test shows that the total distribution is fairly represented by a single-peaked distribution, but that their isolated galaxy subsample (with no significant neighbours within a projected distance of around 80 kpc) is bimodal at the 96 per cent level. We have also investigated the assumptions underlying the isolated galaxy surface brightness distribution, finding that the (often large) inclination corrections used in the construction of this distribution reduce the significance of the bimodality. We conclude that the Ursa Major Cluster dataset is insufficient to establish the presence of a bimodal near-infrared surface brightness distribution: an independent sample of around 100 isolated, low inclination galaxies is required to establish bimodality at the 99 per cent level.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX; 2 embedded figures; re-submitted to MNRAS after replying to referee's comment

    The Structure of the Outer Halo of the Galaxy and its Relationship to Nearby Large-Scale Structure

    We present evidence to support an earlier indication that the Galaxy is embedded in an extended, highly inclined, triaxial halo outlined by the spatial distribution of companion galaxies to the Milky Way. Signatures of this spatial distribution are seen in 1) the angular variation of the radial-velocity dispersion of the companion galaxies, 2) the spatial distribution of the M~31 sub-group of galaxies, 3) the spatial distribution of the isolated, mainly dwarf irregular, galaxies of the Local Group, 4) the velocity anisotropy quadrupole of a sub-group of high-velocity clouds, and 5) the spatial distribution of galaxies in the Coma-Sculptor cloud. Tidal effects of M~31 and surrounding galaxies on the Galaxy are not strong enough to have affected the observed structure. We conclude that this distribution is a reflection of initial conditions. A simple galaxy formation scenario is proposed which ties together the results found here with those of Holmberg (1969) and Zaritsky et al. (1997) on the peculiar distribution of satellites around a large sample of spiral galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astron J., March 2000, 12 pages with 1 figur

    Charting the evolution of the ages and metallicities of massive galaxies since z=0.7

    The stellar populations of intermediate-redshift galaxies can shed light onto the growth of massive galaxies in the last 8 billion years. We perform deep, multi-object rest-frame optical spectroscopy with IMACS/Magellan of ~70 galaxies in the E-CDFS with redshift 0.6522.7 and stellar mass >10^{10}Msun. Following the Bayesian approach adopted for previous low-redshift studies, we constrain the stellar mass, mean stellar age and stellar metallicity of individual galaxies from stellar absorption features. We characterize for the first time the dependence of stellar metallicity and age on stellar mass at z~0.7 for all galaxies and for quiescent and star-forming galaxies separately. These relations for the whole sample have a similar shape as the z=0.1 SDSS analog, but are shifted by -0.28 dex in age and by -0.13 dex in metallicity, at odds with simple passive evolution. We find that no additional star formation and chemical enrichment are required for z=0.7 quiescent galaxies to evolve into the present-day quiescent population. However, this must be accompanied by the quenching of a fraction of z=0.7 Mstar>10^{11}Msun star-forming galaxies with metallicities comparable to those of quiescent galaxies, thus increasing the scatter in age without affecting the metallicity distribution. However rapid quenching of the entire population of massive star-forming galaxies at z=0.7 would be inconsistent with the age/metallicity--mass relation for the population as a whole and with the metallicity distribution of star-forming galaxies only, which are on average 0.12 dex less metal-rich than their local counterparts.     Guilt by association? The criminalisation of sea rescue NGOs in Italian media

    The non-governmental organizations (NGOs) rescuing migrants off the coast of Libya have been increasingly criminalised. We investigate the discursive underpinnings of this process by analyzing all the articles on sea rescue NGOs published between 2014 and 2019 by two major Italian newspapers located at opposite sides of the political spectrum: Il Giornale and La Repubblica. Our discourse analysis shows that the media salience of non-governmental sea rescue increased enormously following the first public allegations against humanitarians and peaked in 2019 after some standoffs between some NGOs and the Italian government, when the number of migrants rescued at sea had already dropped to a minimum. This inflated and heavily politicised media coverage contains both direct and indirect criminalisation discourses. Though sometimes directly accused of colluding with human smugglers and profiting from irregular migration, sea rescue NGOs have more often been indirectly criminalised through the same framing devices typically used to stigmatise irregular mobility at large, namely associational links, metaphors, frame-jacking, and othering

    Optical Observations of the Binary Millisecond Pulsars J2145-0750 and J0034-0534

    We report on optical observations of the low-mass binary millisecond pulsar systems J0034-0534 and J2145-0750. A faint (I=23.5) object was found to be coincident with the timing position of PSR J2145-0750. While a galaxy or distant main-sequence star cannot be ruled out, its magnitude is consistent with an ancient white dwarf, as expected from evolutionary models. For PSR J0034-0534 no objects were detected to a limiting magnitude of R=25.0, suggesting that the white dwarf in this system is cold. Using white dwarf cooling models, the limit on the magnitude of the PSR J0034-0534 companion suggests that at birth the pulsar in this system may have rotated with a period as short as 0.6 ms. These observations provide further evidence that the magnetic fields of millisecond pulsars do not decay on time scales shorter than 1 Gyr.Comment: 6 pages, uuencoded, gz -9 compressed postscript, accepted by ApJ

    Gravitational lens candidates in the E-CDFS

    We report ten lens candidates in the E-CDFS from the GEMS survey. Nine of the systems are new detections and only one of the candidates is a known lens system. For the most promising five systems including the known lens system, we present results from preliminary lens mass modelling, which tests if the candidates are plausible lens systems. Photometric redshifts of the candidate lens galaxies are obtained from the COMBO-17 galaxy catalog. Stellar masses of the candidate lens galaxies within the Einstein radius are obtained by using the zz-band luminosity and the VzV-z color-based stellar mass-to-light ratios. As expected, the lensing masses are found to be larger than the stellar masses of the candidate lens galaxies. These candidates have similar dark matter fractions as compared to lenses in SLACS and COSMOS. They also roughly follow the halo mass-stellar mass relation predicted by the subhalo abundance matching technique. One of the candidate lens galaxies qualifies as a LIRG and may not be a true lens because the arc-like feature in the system is likely to be an active region of star formation in the candidate lens galaxy. Amongst the five best candidates, one is a confirmed lens system, one is a likely lens system, two are less likely to be lenses and the status of one of the candidates is ambiguous. Spectroscopic follow-up of these systems is still required to confirm lensing and/or for more accurate determination of the lens masses and mass density profiles.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, ApJ accepte
