Warm dark matter sterile neutrinos in electron capture and beta decay spectra
We briefly review the motivation to search for sterile neutrinos in the keV
mass scale, as dark matter candidates, and the prospects to find them in beta
decay or electron capture spectra, with a global perspective. We describe the
fundamentals of the neutrino flavor-mass eigenstate mismatch that opens the
possibility of detecting sterile neutrinos in such ordinary nuclear processes.
Results are shown and discussed for the effect of heavy neutrino emission in
electron capture in Holmium 163 and in two isotopes of Lead, 202 and 205, as
well as in the beta decay of Tritium. We study the de-excitation spectrum in
the considered cases of electron capture and the charged lepton spectrum in the
case of Tritium beta decay. For each of these cases, we define ratios of
integrated transition rates over different regions of the spectrum under study,
and give new results that may guide and facilitate the analysis of possible
future measurements, paying particular attention to forbidden transitions in
Lead isotopes.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Zebrafish as animal model for aquaculture nutrition research.
The aquaculture industry continues to promote the diversification of ingredients used in aquafeed in order to achieve a more sustainable aquaculture production system. The evaluation of large numbers of diets in aquaculture species is costly and requires time-consuming trials in some species. In contrast, zebrafish (Danio rerio) can solve these drawbacks as an experimental model, and represents an ideal organism to carry out preliminary evaluation of diets. In addition, zebrafish has a sequenced genome allowing the efficient utilization of new technologies, such as RNA-sequencing and genotyping platforms to study the molecular mechanisms that underlie the organism's response to nutrients. Also, biotechnological tools like transgenic lines with fluorescently labeled neutrophils that allow the evaluation of the immune response in vivo, are readily available in this species. Thus, zebrafish provides an attractive platform for testing many ingredients to select those with the highest potential of success in aquaculture. In this perspective article aspects related to diet evaluation in which zebrafish can make important contributions to nutritional genomics and nutritional immunity are discussed
Aegithus clavicornis (Linnaeus) (Coleoptera: Erotylidae) in the Dominican Republic
Establishment of fungus beetles (Coleoptera: Erotylidae) in new isolated countries is rare. We report Aegithus clavicornis (Linnaeus) for the first time from the Dominican Republic, representing the first true record for this genus from the Greater Antilles
The spatial diffusion of a knowledge base: Laser technology research in West Germany, 1960-2005
We analyze the spatial diffusion of laser-technology in Germany during the early phase of development, between 1960 and 2005. Research in this new technological field began in a few larger centers and then spread to other regions. In the early years, a large firm of the electronics industry located in Munich played a dominating role. The intraregional diffusion of the knowledge in laser technology was particularly high in those regions which have started laser research rather early. There is also no significant effect of regional knowledge in the field of laser technology on the number of regional laser-producers, what may be due to the rather early development stage of the system where not many producers entered the market. Mobility of persons as well as co-publications and co-patents between institutions played only a minor role in the period under investigation
Torsion-Adding and Asymptotic Winding Number for Periodic Window Sequences
In parameter space of nonlinear dynamical systems, windows of periodic states
are aligned following routes of period-adding configuring periodic window
sequences. In state space of driven nonlinear oscillators, we determine the
torsion associated with the periodic states and identify regions of uniform
torsion in the window sequences. Moreover, we find that the measured of torsion
differs by a constant between successive windows in periodic window sequences.
We call this phenomenon as torsion-adding. Finally, combining the torsion and
the period adding rules, we deduce a general rule to obtain the asymptotic
winding number in the accumulation limit of such periodic window sequences
Theater Torpedo Inventory Optimization
NPS NRP Executive SummaryAnti-submarine warfare (ASW) is a core mission area for the U.S. Navy and an essential component in achieving sea control. The allocation of torpedoes in support of ASW across a U.S. Fleet is currently a manual process based on shore-based personnel's experience or historical norms. This study will analyze the impact of torpedo loadouts incorporating a complex set of constraints ranging from platform capabilities to probability of kill. A mixed-integer program will be used to compare the effectiveness of different torpedo loadouts. The goal of this work is to maximize the probability of a successful outcome in a theoretical campaign against anticipated submarine threats.N8 - Integration of Capabilities & ResourcesThis research is supported by funding from the Naval Postgraduate School, Naval Research Program (PE 0605853N/2098). https://nps.edu/nrpChief of Naval Operations (CNO)Approved for public release.
