They have come a long way: the settlement of the 1980's Solidarity wave of Polish immigrants in Melbourne

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to research the settlement of the Solidarity wave of Polish immigrants in Melbourne who arrived in Australia between 1980-84 and thus reduce the gap in knowledge about this group of immigrants. Because of the limited knowledge available about the settlement outcomes of Polish immigrants, a comprehensive data collection process was undertaken through interviews involving 60 participants

Vector bundles over noncommutative nodal curves

We desribe vector bundles over a class of noncommutative curves, namely, over noncommutative nodal curves of string type and of almost string type. We also prove that in other cases the classification of vector bundles over a noncommutative curve is a wild problem.Comment: 18 page

WASA-FRS EXPERIMENTS IN FAIR PHASE-0 AT GSI

    Get PDF
We have developed a new and unique experimental setup integrating the central part of the Wide Angle Shower Apparatus (WASA) into the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This combination opens up possibilities of new experiments with high-resolution spectroscopy at forward 0◦ and measurements of light decay particles with nearly full solid-angle acceptance in coincidence. The first series of the WASA-FRS experiments have been successfully carried out in 2022. The developed experimental setup and two physics experiments performed in 2022 including the status of the preliminary data analysis are introduced.</p

MN Draconis - peculiar, active dwarf nova in the period gap

Context: We present results of an extensive world-wide observing campaign of MN Draconis. Aims: MN Draconis is a poorly known active dwarf nova in the period gap and is one of the only two known cases of period gap SU UMa objects showing the negative superhumps. Photometric behaviour of MN Draconis poses a challenge for existing models of the superhump and superoutburst mechanisms. Therefore, thorough investigation of peculiar systems, such as MN Draconis, is crucial for our understanding of evolution of the close binary stars. Methods: To measure fundamental parameters of the system, we collected photometric data in October 2009, June-September 2013 and June-December 2015. Analysis of the light curves, OCO-C diagrams and power spectra was carried out. Results: During our three observational seasons we detected four superoutburts and several normal outbursts. Based on the two consecutive superoutbursts detected in 2015, the supercycle length was derived P_sc = 74 +/- 0.5 days and it has been increasing with a rate of P_dot = 3.3 x 10^(-3) during last twelve years. Based on the positive and negative superhumps we calculated the period excess epsilon = 5.6% +/- 0.1%, the period deficit epsilon_ = 2.5% +/- 0.6%, and in result, the orbital period P_orb = 0.0994(1) days (143.126 +/- 0.144 min). We updated the basic light curve parameters of MN Draconis. Conclusions: MN Draconis is the first discovered SU UMa system in the period gap with increasing supercycle length.Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Boxed pervasive games: an experience with user-created pervasive games

    Get PDF
Pervasive games are rapidly maturing - from early research experiments with locative games we now start to see a range of commercial projects using locative and pervasive technology to create technology-supported pervasive games. In this paper we report on our experiences in transferring the successful involvement of players in computer games to modding for pervasive games. We present the design process, the enabling tools and two sample games provided in boxes to end users. Finally we discuss how our findings inform the design of modding tools for a pervasive game community of the future

V407 Cygni - nova like outburst in symbiotic system

    No full text
We presented spectroscopic and photometric observations of V407 Cygni obtained during 2006-2011. Our data shows the different activity stages connected with the two components of this symbiotic binary system. Cool giant exhibits pulsation character typical for Mira-type stars. Simultaneously, classical nova outburst connected with hot white dwarf was observed in 2010. Multicolour photometry and spectra obtained in a wide wave range are necessary to understand behaviour of such extreme binary. Our long-term observations together with gamma-ray, X-ray and radio monitoring reported by other authors covered the whole spectral domain and provide a lot of useful information about the nature of V407 Cyg

V407 Cyg and RS Oph - comparison of two exotic variables

    No full text
V407 Cygni and RS Ophiuchi are two similar but unique objects. It can be said that they each belong to an individual type of stars. During their quiet state they seem to be symbiotic stars. However, both stars have previously displayed nova-like outbursts. We would like to take a closer look at these two unique objects, and to compare them. We presented spectroscopic and photometric observations of V407 Cyg and RS Oph obtained throughout the period from 2006 until 2013. Our data show the di erent activity stages connected with the two components of these binary systems. Multicolour photometry and spectra obtained in a wide frequency range are utilized to understand the behaviour of such extremely binaries

Comments on the High Pressure Preservation of Human Milk

    Get PDF
The current state of studies on the high pressure preservation of the human milk is briefly presented. It is indicated that reaching (i) the antimicrobial safety, (ii) antiviral safety, and (iii) high nutritional, metabolic and immunological quality, may be difficult for a “classical” single pressure pulse High Pressure Preservation (HPP) treatment. It is shown that the sudden decompression leads to additional physical processes, which can be important for supporting the HPP technology. Additional advantages were reached due to the two-pulse compression, with subsequent values: P = 200 MPa and 400 MPa. Tests included the microbiological insight for the two-weeks storage. It is also shown that the decay of the number of microorganisms under the high pressure follows the relation n(t) = n0exp(At)exp(Bt2). Finally, issues regarding containers for the high pressure preservation of human milk are discussed
