    Evaluation of the Yard Gard Ultrasonic Yard Protector for Repelling White-Tailed Deer

    Ultrasonic devices are marketed for pest control because some manufacturers believe they possess properties aversive to animals. However, there is little evidence that ultrasound is more aversive to animals than is audible sound. In this study, we examined the efficacy of the Yard Gard ultrasonic device for deterring deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from feeding on apples. Four deer feeding stations were established at private residential properties with a history of deer damage to ornamental plants, so that control (A1 and B1) and experimental (A2 and B2) stations existed at each site. Apples were placed at each feeding station and restocked daily from mid-February to mid-March 1995. Yard Gard devices were set up at one station at each site, and we monitored daily deer activity by counting: (1) apples remaining, (2) deer tracks, and (3) deer fecal pellet groups at all feeding stations. Of the 360 total apples offered at site A while the devices were on, 175.0 (97.2%) and 179.5 (99.7%) apples were consumed at control (A1) and experimental (A2) stations, respectively. Of the 400 total apples offered at site B while the devices were on, 188 (94.0%) and 196.5 (98.3%) apples were consumed at control (B1) and experimental (B2) stations, respectively. Apple consumption at feeding stations proved to be the only quantitative data which provided a consistent measure of deer activity. Behavioral observations made at each site revealed that several deer visited the control and experimental feeding stations while Yard Gard devices were on. Apparently, the deer were alerted by the ultrasonic emissions but were not deterred from consuming apples. In conclusion, this study produced no evidence that the Yard Gard ultrasonic device protected the area from deer activity, or preferred foods from deer damage

    Cost Comparisons for White-Tailed Deer Live Capture Techniques

    During March 13 - July 16, 1996, we captured 75 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) using dart guns, rocket nets, and Clover traps on the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, New York. We compared the labor and cost efficiency of these trapping techniques and reported on mortalities. Darting from a vehicle (196/deer),androcketnetting(196/deer), and rocket-netting (172/deer) were similar in time and cost efficiency. Darting from a blind was more costly (358/deer)duetominimaltimedevotedtothetechniqueandahighinitialmaterialinvestment.Clovertrapswererelativelyinefficient(15.2hours/deer)andcostly(358/deer) due to minimal time devoted to the technique and a high initial material investment. Clover traps were relatively inefficient (15.2 hours/deer) and costly (895/deer), primarily due to a lack of snow. Materials comprised most of the total cost for all methods. Darting from a vehicle had the highest mortality (9.5%, n=2 of 21). Cost efficiency for all trapping techniques was poorly represented in the literature

    Distinguishing cancerous from non-cancerous cells through analysis of electrical noise

    Since 1984, electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) has been used to monitor cell behavior in tissue culture and has proven sensitive to cell morphological changes and cell motility. We have taken ECIS measurements on several cultures of non-cancerous (HOSE) and cancerous (SKOV) human ovarian surface epithelial cells. By analyzing the noise in real and imaginary electrical impedance, we demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish the two cell types purely from signatures of their electrical noise. Our measures include power-spectral exponents, Hurst and detrended fluctuation analysis, and estimates of correlation time; principal-component analysis combines all the measures. The noise from both cancerous and non-cancerous cultures shows correlations on many time scales, but these correlations are stronger for the non-cancerous cells.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; submitted to PR

    Zooplankton Biodiversity Patterns Across a Novel Water Storage Complex in the NJ Pinelands

    The study involves the collection of zooplankton samples from Whitesbog, which is an inactive cranberry bog complex that is used as water storage for cranberry harvest during the fall season. Whitesbog is novel because very little human activity occurs in the surrounding area that could degrade water quality, but the complex itself is not natural. The water found in the upstream parts of the bog is highly acidic, which likely creates a gradient of ecological dystrophy in the zooplankton community. In this study, we investigate patterns of density and biodiversity across the complex and question whether these patterns are driven by physical-chemical conditions. Zooplankton density for different species varies between sites, with some sites changing more than others over time. Water temperature was the best predictor of zooplankton density, but it is unclear with present data whether this is a non-linear or linear response gradient. Turbidity and water temperature are the best predictors of zooplankton biodiversity, but the environmental variables we measured were insufficient to explain much of the observed differences between sites.     Avatars of Eurocentrism in the critique of the liberal peace

    Recent scholarly critiques of the so-called liberal peace raise important political and ethical challenges to practices of postwar intervention in the global South. However, their conceptual and analytic approaches have tended to reproduce rather than challenge the intellectual Eurocentrism underpinning the liberal peace. Eurocentric features of the critiques include the methodological bypassing of target subjects in research, the analytic bypassing of subjects through frameworks of governmentality, the assumed ontological split between the ‘liberal’ and the ‘local’, and a nostalgia for the liberal subject and the liberal social contract as alternative bases for politics. These collectively produce a ‘paradox of liberalism’ that sees the liberal peace as oppressive but also the only true source of emancipation. However, the article suggests that a repoliticization of colonial difference offers an alternative ‘decolonizing’ approach to critical analysis through repositioning the analytic gaze. Three alternative research strategies for critical analysis are briefly developed

    Characteristics of the Private Nuisance Wildlife Control Industry in New York

    The nuisance wildlife control industry is rapidly expanding in New York State. To gain additional insight about this industry and the number of animals handled, we reviewed the 1989-90 annual logs submitted by Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators (NWCOs) to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservatlon (DEC). The specific objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the number and species of different wildlife responsible for damage incidents, (2) the cause of damage complaints, (3) the disposition of animals handled, (4) the location of damage events (i.e., urban, suburban, rural), and (5) an estimate of the economic impact of the nuisance wildlife industry in Upstate New York. The Nuisance Wildlife Logs (NWLs) were examined for 7 urban and 7 rural counties (25.5% of Upstate counties), and these data were used to estimate total NWCO activity in DEC Regions 3 through 9 (excludes Long Island). Approximately 75% of NWCOs licensed by DEC were active during 1989-90, and nearly 2,800 complaints were handled in the 14 counties sampled. More than 90% of complaints came from urban counties, and we estimated that NWCOs responded to more than 11,000 calls in Upstate New York. At a conservative estimate of 35/call,revenuegeneratedbythisindustryexceeded35/call, revenue generated by this industry exceeded 385,000 annually . Six wildlife species accounted for 85% of the nuisance complaints in urban and rural counties. During 1986 to 1993, the number of NWCOs licensed by DEC nearly quadrupled, and there is no indication that this trend will change in the near future

    Suburban Deer Management: A Matter of Perspective

    Many metropolitan areas in the eastern United States are experiencing management conflicts associated with overabundant deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations. Sometimes these deer populations exceed the biological carrying capacity of available habitat and wildlife acceptance capacity (Decker and Purdy 1988) of local residents. For nearly 2 decades, a deer management controversy has been developing in Durand Eastman Park and the Town of Irondequoit, located in the greater Rochester metropolitan area, Monroe County, New York. Three local citizen organizations concerned about deer are described, and each has promoted various nonhunting alternatives to reduce human-deer problems. For 15 years, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has promoted liberal archery seasons as the preferred alternative for reducing deer numbers, although the discharge of bow and arrows is prohibited within the Town of Irondequoit and Durand Eastman Park by local laws. During 1992, DEC and Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) organized a Citizen Task Force (CTF) in an attempt to resolve this controversy and reach consensus with community leaders concerning future deer management objectives and alternatives. CTF members exhibited a wide range of values and attitudes concerning suburban deer management. A deer management plan was developed and implemented based on CTF recommendations. This case study emphasizes the need for integrating both the biological and human dimensions to resolve suburban wildlife management issues

    Casimir force between designed materials: what is possible and what not

    We establish strict upper limits for the Casimir interaction between multilayered structures of arbitrary dielectric or diamagnetic materials. We discuss the appearance of different power laws due to frequency-dependent material constants. Simple analytical expressions are in good agreement with numerical calculations based on Lifshitz theory.     Sensitivity of Second Harmonic Generation to Space Charge Effects at Si(111)/Electrolyte and Si(111)/SiO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e/Electrolyte Interfaces

    The potential dependence in the surface second harmonic response from hydrogen terminated n‐Si(111) and oxidized n‐Si(111) surfaces has been examined in aqueous NH4F and H2SO4 solutions. The relative phase of the nonlinear response as measured by rotational anisotropy experiments is found to be highly sensitive to the presence of the oxide and the field applied across the Si(111)/oxide/electrolyte interface. These observations are attributed to field effects within the space–charge region of the semiconductor which vary with the presence and thickness of the insulating oxide layer on the Si(111) surface
