    Kink-antikink interactions in the double sine-Gordon equation and the problem of resonance frequencies

    We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon" (DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter R>0R>0. For small values of RR we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies. We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink.     The aim of this study was to investigate effects of dietary levels of histidine (His) and iron (Fe) on cataract development in two strains of Atlantic salmon monitored through parr-smolt transformation. Three experimental diets were fed: (i) a control diet (CD) with 110 mg kg-1 Fe and 11.7 g kg-1 His; (ii) CD supplemented with crystalline His to a level of 18 g kg-1 (HD); and (iii) HD with added iron up to 220 mg kg-1 (HID). A cross-over design, with two feeding periods was used. A 6-week freshwater (FW) period was followed by a 20-week period, of which the first three were in FW and the following 17 weeks in sea water (SW). Fish were sampled for weighing, cataract assessment and tissue analysis at five time points. Cataracts developed in all groups in SW, but scores were lower in those fed high His diets (P < 0.05). This effect was most pronounced when HD or HID was given in SW, but was also observed when these diets were given in FW only. Histidine supplementation had a positive effect on growth performance and feed conversion ratio (P < 0.05), whereas this did not occur when iron was added. Groups fed HD or HID had higher lens levels of His and N-acetyl histidine (NAH), the latter showing a marked increase post-smoltification (P < 0.05). The HD or HID groups also showed higher muscle concentrations of the His dipeptide anserine (P < 0.05). There was a strong genetic influence on cataract development in the CD groups (P < 0.001), not associated with tissue levels of His or NAH. The role of His and His-related compounds in cataractogenesis is discussed in relation to tissue buffering, osmoregulation and antioxidation

    The frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice: J1J_{1}--J2J_{2} model

    We study the ground-state (gs) phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 J1J_{1}--J2J_{2} antiferromagnet with J2=κJ1>0J_{2}=\kappa J_1>0 (J1>0J_{1}>0) on the honeycomb lattice, using the coupled-cluster method. We present results for the ground-state energy, magnetic order parameter and plaquette valence-bond crystal (PVBC) susceptibility. We find a paramagnetic PVBC phase for κc1<κ<κc2\kappa_{c_1}<\kappa<\kappa_{c_2}, where κc1≈0.207±0.003\kappa_{c_1} \approx 0.207 \pm 0.003 and κc2≈0.385±0.010\kappa_{c_2} \approx 0.385 \pm 0.010. The transition at κc1\kappa_{c_1} to the N\'{e}el phase seems to be a continuous deconfined transition (although we cannot exclude a very narrow intermediate phase in the range 0.21≲κ≲0.240.21 \lesssim \kappa \lesssim 0.24), while that at κc2\kappa_{c_2} is of first-order type to another quasiclassical antiferromagnetic phase that occurs in the classical version of the model only at the isolated and highly degenerate critical point κ=1/2\kappa = 1/2. The spiral phases that are present classically for all values κ>1/6\kappa > 1/6 are absent for all κ≲1\kappa \lesssim 1.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    Concentration Dependence of the Effective Mass of He-3 Atoms in He-3/He-4 Mixtures

    Recent measurements by Yorozu et al. (S. Yorozu, H. Fukuyama, and H. Ishimoto, Phys. Rev. B 48, 9660 (1993)) as well as by Simons and Mueller (R. Simons and R. M. Mueller, Czhechoslowak Journal of Physics Suppl. 46, 201 (1976)) have determined the effective mass of He-3 atoms in a He-3/He-4 mixture with great accuracy. We here report theoretical calculations for the dependence of that effective mass on the He-3 concentration. Using correlated basis functions perturbation theory to infinite order to compute effective interactions in the appropriate channels, we obtain good agreement between theory and experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Radio Observations of the Black Hole Candidate GX 339-4

    The black hole candidate GX 339-4 was first detected as a variable radio source by Sood & Campbell-Wilson in May 1994 with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST). Since then, several observations have been obtained with the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) in order to study the radio behavior of this source in relation to its soft and hard X-ray activity. We present new results of high resolution radio observations performed with the ATCA in order to study the jet-like feature observed in GX 339-4 by Fender et al (1997).     Arginine deprivation, growth inhibition and tumour cell death: 2. Enzymatic degradation of arginine in normal and malignant cell cultures

    Arginase added to culture medium reduced arginine to negligible levels within approximately 6 h, and enzyme activity persisted relatively undiminished for at least 3 days. Human and bovine arginase proved equally effective. The response of normal cells was to enter G1 (G0) arrest, from which most of the cells could be recovered weeks later. In contrast, malignant cell lines treated with unpegylated or pegylated enzyme resulted in cell death on a massive scale within 3 - 5 days, with a very low to negligible percentage of cells (8 days. Arginine decarboxylase caused malignant cell arrest at the same units per millilitre as arginase. Its breakdown product, agmatine, was relatively nontoxic in the presence of arginine, but exacerbated cell death above millimolar concentration in its absence. Although ornithine failed to rescue cells from deprivation, citrulline recovered cells in all cases, although less well in fast-growing tumour cell populations, whereas readdition of arginine failed to work unless a complete medium change was given (because of the persistence of the enzymes in the medium catabolising its destruction).
