Cholinoceptor Activation Subserving the Effects of Interferon Gamma on the Contractility of Rat Ileum
Recombinant rat interferon γ stimulated the contractility of
isolated rat ileum at doses of 4–12 units/ml. Muscarinic
cholinoceptors were involved, as treatment of the tissue with
atropine prevented the contractile response of the ileum.
Furthermore, interferon γ increased the affinity of carbachol for
the cholinoceptors and did not change its maximum effect. Neurogenic
pathways were also involved since pretreatment of ileum with
hexamethonium, hemicholinium or tetrodotoxin impaired the
contractile effect of interferon γ. In contrast to the action of
exogenous carbachol, the effects of interferon γ are indirect. They
appear to involve a G protein regulating phosphoinositide turnover
and cytoskeletal structures since they could not be induced in ileum
strips that were pretreated with pertussis toxin, phospholipase C
inhibitors (2-nitro-carboxyphenyl, NN-diphenyl carbamate and
neomycin), cytochalasine B or colchicine

Neisseria gonorrhoeae challenge increases matrix metalloproteinase-8 expression in fallopian tube explants
Indexación: Scopus.Background: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Ngo) is the etiological agent of gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that initially infects the female lower genital tract. In untreated women, the bacteria can ascend to the upper genital reproductive tract and infect the fallopian tube (FTs), which is associated with salpingitis and can lead to impaired FT function and infertility. The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in cell migration and differentiation in the female genital tract, and some pathogens modify the ECM to establish successful infections. The ECM is regulated by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), their endogenous inhibitors; MMP deregulation causes pathological conditions in a variety of tissues. Results: The aim of this work was to analyze the expression and localization of MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 in FT explants during Ngo infection using real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, zymography and ELISA. No significant variations in MMP-3, MMP-9, and TIMP-1 transcript levels were observed. In contrast, a significant increase (p < 0.05) was observed for MMP-8 expression and was accompanied by stromal immunoreactivity in infected explants. ELISA results supported these findings and showed that MMP-8 release increased upon gonococcal infection. Quantum Magnetic Impurities in Magnetically Ordered Systems
We discuss the problem of a spin 1/2 impurity immersed in a spin S
magnetically ordered background. We show that the problem maps onto a
generalization of the dissipative two level system (DTLS) with two independent
heat baths, associated with the Goldstone modes of the magnet, that couple to
different components of the impurity spin operator. Using analytical
perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods and accurate numerical
renormalization group (NRG) we show that contrary to other dissipative models
there is quantum frustration of decoherence and quasi-scaling even in the
strong coupling regime. We make predictions for the behavior of the impurity
magnetic susceptibility that can be measured in nuclear magnetic resonance
(NMR) experiments. Our results may also have relevance to quantum computation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Assisted hopping and interaction effects in impurity models
We study, using Numerical Renormalization Group methods, the generalization
of the Anderson impurity model where the hopping depends on the filling of the
impurity. We show that the model, for sufficiently large values of the assisted
hopping term, shows a regime where local pairing correlations are enhanced.
These correlations involve pairs fluctuating between on site and nearest
neighbor positions
