On the Hardness of a New Boron Phase, Orthorhombic {\gamma}-B28
Measurements of the hardness of a new high-pressure boron phase, orthorhombic
{\gamma}-B28, are reported. According to the data obtained, {\gamma}-B28 has
the highest hardness (~50 GPa) of all known crystalline modifications of boron
The high-pressure phase of boron, {\gamma}-B28: disputes and conclusions of 5 years after discovery
{\gamma}-B28 is a recently established high-pressure phase of boron. Its
structure consists of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 dumbbells in a NaCl-type
arrangement (B2){\delta}+(B12){\delta}- and displays a significant charge
transfer {\delta}~0.5- 0.6. The discovery of this phase proved essential for
the understanding and construction of the phase diagram of boron. {\gamma}-B28
was first experimentally obtained as a pure boron allotrope in early 2004 and
its structure was discovered in 2006. This paper reviews recent results and in
particular deals with the contentious issues related to the equation of state,
hardness, putative isostructural phase transformation at ~40 GPa, and debates
on the nature of chemical bonding in this phase. Our analysis confirms that (a)
calculations based on density functional theory give an accurate description of
its equation of state, (b) the reported isostructural phase transformation in
{\gamma}-B28 is an artifact rather than a fact, (c) the best estimate of
hardness of this phase is 50 GPa, (d) chemical bonding in this phase has a
significant degree of ionicity. Apart from presenting an overview of previous
results within a consistent view grounded in experiment, thermodynamics and
quantum mechanics, we present new results on Bader charges in {\gamma}-B28
using different levels of quantum-mechanical theory (GGA, exact exchange, and
HSE06 hybrid functional), and show that the earlier conclusion about
significant degree of partial ionicity in this phase is very robust
The Mouse Genome Database (MGD): comprehensive resource for genetics and genomics of the laboratory mouse
The Mouse Genome Database (MGD, http://www.informatics.jax.org) is the international community resource for integrated genetic, genomic and biological data about the laboratory mouse. Data in MGD are obtained through loads from major data providers and experimental consortia, electronic submissions from laboratories and from the biomedical literature. MGD maintains a comprehensive, unified, non-redundant catalog of mouse genome features generated by distilling gene predictions from NCBI, Ensembl and VEGA. MGD serves as the authoritative source for the nomenclature of mouse genes, mutations, alleles and strains. MGD is the primary source for evidence-supported functional annotations for mouse genes and gene products using the Gene Ontology (GO). MGD provides full annotation of phenotypes and human disease associations for mouse models (genotypes) using terms from the Mammalian Phenotype Ontology and disease names from the Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) resource. MGD is freely accessible online through our website, where users can browse and search interactively, access data in bulk using Batch Query or BioMart, download data files or use our web services Application Programming Interface (API). Improvements to MGD include expanded genome feature classifications, inclusion of new mutant allele sets and phenotype associations and extensions of GO to include new relationships and a new stream of annotations via phylogenetic-based approaches
Ionic high-pressure form of elemental boron
Boron is an element of fascinating chemical complexity. Controversies have
shrouded this element since its discovery was announced in 1808: the new
'element' turned out to be a compound containing less than 60-70 percent of
boron, and it was not until 1909 that 99-percent pure boron was obtained. And
although we now know of at least 16 polymorphs, the stable phase of boron is
not yet experimentally established even at ambient conditions. Boron's
complexities arise from frustration: situated between metals and insulators in
the periodic table, boron has only three valence electrons, which would favour
metallicity, but they are sufficiently localized that insulating states emerge.
However, this subtle balance between metallic and insulating states is easily
shifted by pressure, temperature and impurities. Here we report the results of
high-pressure experiments and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure
predictions that explore the structural stability of boron under pressure and,
strikingly, reveal a partially ionic high-pressure boron phase. This new phase
is stable between 19 and 89 GPa, can be quenched to ambient conditions, and has
a hitherto unknown structure (space group Pnnm, 28 atoms in the unit cell)
consisting of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 pairs in a NaCl-type arrangement.
We find that the ionicity of the phase affects its electronic bandgap, infrared
adsorption and dielectric constants, and that it arises from the different
electronic properties of the B2 pairs and B12 clusters and the resultant charge

IUPHAR-DB: updated database content and new features
The International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) database, IUPHAR-DB (http://www.iuphar-db.org) is an open access, online database providing detailed, expert-driven annotation of the primary literature on human and rodent receptors and other drug targets, together with the substances that act on them. The present release includes information on the products of 646 genes from four major protein classes (G protein-coupled receptors, nuclear hormone receptors, voltage- and ligand-gated ion channels) and âŒ3180 bioactive molecules (endogenous ligands, licensed drugs and key pharmacological tools) that interact with them. We have described previously the classification and curation of data for small molecule ligands in the database; in this update we have annotated 366 endogenous peptide ligands with their amino acid sequences, post-translational modifications, links to precursor genes, species differences and relationships with other molecules in the database (e.g. those derived from the same precursor). We have also matched targets with their endogenous ligands (peptides and small molecules), with particular attention paid to identifying bioactive peptide ligands generated by post-translational modification of precursor proteins. Other improvements to the database include enhanced information on the clinical relevance of targets and ligands in the database, more extensive links to other databases and a pilot project for the curation of enzymes as drug targets
Complementary Sources of Protein Functional Information: The Far Side of GO.
The GO captures many aspects of functional annotations, but there are other alternative complementary sources of protein function information. For example, enzyme functional annotations are described in a range of resources from the Enzyme Commission (E.C.) hierarchical classification to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) to the Catalytic Site Atlas amongst many others. This chapter describes some of the main resources available and how they can be used in conjunction with GO
Sex differences in zonulin in affective disorders and associations with current mood symptoms
Zonulin measurement was funded by Institut Allergosan (Graz, Austria).Introduction: The bidirectional connection between the brain and the gut within psychiatric entities has gained increasing scientific attention over the last years. As a regulator of intestinal permeability, zonulin acts as a key player on the interface of this interplay. Like several psychiatric disorders, intestinal permeability was associated with inflammation in previous findings. Methods: In this study we explored differences in zonulin serum levels in currently depressed (n = 55) versus currently euthymic (n = 37) individuals with an affective disorder. Further, we explored sex differences and possible influences on zonulin and affective symptoms like medication, age, body mass index, and smoking status. Results: Serum zonulin was significantly higher in females than in men independent from affective status (z = -2.412, p = .016). More specifically, females in the euthymic subgroup had higher zonulin levels than euthymic men (z = -2.114, p = .035). There was no difference in zonulin serum levels in individuals taking or not taking a specific psychopharmacotherapy. We found no correlation between zonulin serum levels and depression severity. Discussion: Increased serum zonulin levels as a proxy for increased intestinal permeability in women may indicate a state of elevated susceptibility for depression-inducing stimuli.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
