WORLD NEEDS FOR FOOD AND FIBER: SOME ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS, RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT, AND THE ENVIRONMENT

    Get PDF
This paper addresses itself to three aspects of world food and fiber needs and the protection of the ecosystem. The first is to distinguish between food and fiber needs of the world on the one hand, and the production of food and fiber in developing countries as part of a long-term process of economic development on the other. The second area of attention is the role of science and technology in the process of agricultural modernization and development. Finally, we will look at a class of problems dealing with socially costly externalities associated with agricultural development and the use of new technologies.Food Security and Poverty,

Development and application of an optimization procedure for flutter suppression using the aerodynamic energy concept

    Get PDF
An optimization procedure is developed based on the responses of a system to continuous gust inputs. The procedure uses control law transfer functions which have been partially determined by using the relaxed aerodynamic energy approach. The optimization procedure yields a flutter suppression system which minimizes control surface activity in a gust environment. The procedure is applied to wing flutter of a drone aircraft to demonstrate a 44 percent increase in the basic wing flutter dynamic pressure. It is shown that a trailing edge control system suppresses the flutter instability over a wide range of subsonic mach numbers and flight altitudes. Results of this study confirm the effectiveness of the relaxed energy approach

TECHNOLOGY AND THE AGRICULTURAL OUTPUT MIX

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to show how the allocation of research resources among commodities and the effects of such allocations on the output mix depend upon (a) the initial production conditions, (b) the nature of the research production functions, and (c) the nature of the demand relations for the commodity outputs. The basic model used is a two-factor, two-product model in which certain types of technical change are introduced.Farm Management,

Analog voicing detector responds to pitch

    Get PDF
Modified electronic voice encoder /Vocoder/ includes an independent analog mode of operation in addition to the conventional digital mode. The Vocoder is a bandwidth compression equipment that permits voice transmission over channels, having only a fraction of the bandwidth required for conventional telephone-quality speech transmission

The purpose of this paper is to show how the allocation of research resources among commodities and the effects of such allocations on the output mix depend upon (a) the initial production conditions, (b) the nature of the research production functions, (c) the nature of the demand relations for the commodity outputs, (d) relative factor endowments, and (e) the existence of different types of environmental constraints. The basic model used is a two-factor, two-product model in which certain types of technical change are introduced.Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
