Genre Typology of Media Texts
Criteria for drawing up a typology of modern media genres are being developed. The proposed typology reflects the tendencies of the modern mass media space, where there is an increase in the influencing component, and also the mobility of genres and genre system is noted. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that we have presented a universal method of typologizing the modern system of media genres, taking into account the current trends in the mass media. According to the results of the study, this typology is based on differences in communicative intent, which can be either informational or non-informational. The author divides the non- informational communicative intention into such intentions as phatics, open influence, manipulation and mystification, where each of the intentions is not a separate intention, but elements of a single scale; with each element proceeding from the previous one and representing its more intensified form. A genre system is being developed. It is proposed to determine the position of a genre in typology by calculating the ratio of objective and subjective modality in the texts of this genre. It is shown that the category “modality” is related to the author’s intentions: objective modality — with informational communicative intention, subjective modality — with non-informational one
Discursive Practice and Communicative Strategy: Eclecticism vs Poly-paradigmatism?
The focus of this research is on the concepts of “communicative strategy” and “discursive practice,” which are frequently used today without being tied to a specific linguistic paradigm. The objective was to clarify whether these concepts can be classified as cross-paradigmatic, meaning they are not limited to a specific linguistic paradigm. The study revealed that despite their apparent similarities, these concepts differ in several key characteristics and are aimed at solving different tasks. Additionally, it was found that the main differentiation between these phenomena occurs at the level of their association with different linguistic domains: discursive practice is an element of discourse (and therefore belongs to the discursive paradigm), while communicative strategy is an element of communication (and is thus considered within the framework of the communicative-pragmatic / linguo-communicative paradigm and speech act theory). Analysis of contemporary research focused on studying communicative strategies and discursive practices showed a prevalence of a more “narrow” interpretation of the concept of “discourse,” which allows for the identification of specific forms of communicative practices within discourse. Furthermore, there is a simplification in the understanding of the implementation of discursive practices
Citation as a Basis for Differentiating Mass Media Genres
Citation is considered as a tool for genre differentiation of mass media texts. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of citation in the genres of “news report”, “analytical article” and “opinion” was carried out, which are texts with varying degrees of representation of the author’s assessment, which can be expressed, including by citation. A system of parameters has been developed, on the basis of which it would be possible to carry out genre differentiation of newspaper texts. It includes quotations, the type of verb introducing the quotation, the presence and nature of the additional construction, and the source of the quotation. The data obtained indicate that the analytical article is dominated by direct quotations introduced by neutral verbs. It is noted that official sources are most often used as a source of information, this corresponds to the genre’s desire for objectivity and impartiality. It is shown that in the genre of “opinion” quotations as interspersed with someone else’s text are rare; citation mainly performs evaluative and expressive functions, which is confirmed by a high percentage of segmented citations, as well as the prevalence of such sources of information as the collective and the media. It was revealed that citation in a news message meets such genre requirements as compressed volume, information compression and generalization
Implementation of Category of Evidentiality in Analytical Article of English-Language Quality Press
The ways of explication of evidentiality in analytical articles of the English-language press are investigated. 30 articles of newspapers “The Washington Post”, “The Guardian”, “The Independent” for 2021 are analyzed. The classification of evidential values is presented on the basis of two indicators: the source of information and its degree of reliability. Three types of evidentiality have been identified: direct evidentiality (there is a clear indication of the source of information); impersonal evidentiality (lack of an identified source of information); author’s evidentiality (based on the author’s conclusions). The results of the study showed a significant superiority of direct evidentiality (74 %), realized through the precise indication of the source of information and the use of the author’s “we”. It was revealed that impersonal evidentiality is not typical for an analytical article (6 %). This is due to its specific characteristics: the desire for objectivity and transparency of the data provided. It is noted that this type of evidentiality is realized through adverbs, indicating an anonymous source and using collective nouns. It is shown that the author’s evidentiality is found in 20 % of cases and is realized through filler words, main sentences like that means, adverbs, impersonal sentences using verbs of perception, constructions “to be + adjective with a probability value”, modal verbs
Editorial as a Discursive Genre
Editorial is considered as a discursive genre of the English-language press. The concept of the discursive genre was developed by M. Montgomery on the example of mass media texts and allows us to combine the approach to considering the genre, on the one hand, as a recurrent stable structure, and on the other hand, to emphasize its mobility and variability. It is argued that this approach is especially relevant for media texts due to the existing difficulties in developing their typology and determining their status. The genre-forming features of editorial are highlighted: the use of colloquial speech, argumentativeness, intertextuality, high emotionality of the language, the presence of individual author’s nominations, as well as the use of discursive practices of recommendation and forecasting. The structure of the genre is defined: it is a three-stage model, where the conclusion plays a special role, which, in turn, can take such forms as conclusion-recommendations, conclusion-forecast, conclusion-evaluation, as well as various combinations of all three types of conclusions. It has been established that, from the point of view of content, the editorial covers the most pressing issues that are at the center of socio-political debates. The definition of editorial is given as a genre of high-quality English-language press, which acts as a tool for promoting the political interests of the newspaper and influencing public values and attitudes
Newspaper-Style Expressivization and Dialogization Trends (News Block of English-Language Newspapers)
The article is devoted to the analysis of the state of the modern newspaper style. The author notes that the theory of newspaper style was developed in the 60s of the last century and since then has undergone a number of changes that have not received sufficient coverage in linguistics. Attention is paid to the changes in the modern newspaper style, among which one can single out the strengthening of emotionality and dialogue. It is emphasized that these features are generally characteristic of media texts and, correspondingly, newspaper-style texts included in the media space. According to the presented research results, these tendencies are realized in newspaper-style texts through the use of colloquial vocabulary, repetition, quotation and question in the narrative (or rhetorical question), word play. It is shown that, at the same time, the majority of news reports (81 %), which constitute the core of the newspaper style and most clearly reflect its features, retain the key style characteristics: the prevalence of the message function, conciseness, brevity, the desire for emotionless and non-judgmental presentation. It seems that the statements about the “blurring” and disappearance of the newspaper style are premature and are caused by its evolution and dynamics
