These organisms include ecologically dominant species that structure many terrestrial and marine ecosystems, as well as many pathogens, pests, and invasive species. We must consider both the evolution and maintenance of these various reproductive modes and how these modes shape the genetic diversity, adaptive evolution, and ability to persist of the species that exhibit them. Thus, having a common framework is a key aspect of understanding the biodiversity that shapes our planet. In the 2019 AGA President’s Symposium, Sex and Asex: The genetics of complex life cycles, researchers investigating a wide range of taxonomic models and using a variety of modes of investigation coalesced around a common theme – understanding not only how such complex life cycles may evolve, but how they are shaped by the evolutionary and ecological forces around them. In this introduction to the Special Issue from the symposium, we give an overview of some of the key ideas and areas of investigation (a common clonal lexicon, we might say) and introduce the breadth of work submitted by symposium participants
Assessment and diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder: The experiences of speech and language therapists

Recent research suggests the disorder is not restricted to the language domain and against this background, the challenge for the practitioner is to provide accurate assessment and effective therapy. The language practitioner aims to support the child and their carers to achieve the best outcomes. However, little is known about the experiences of the language practitioner in the assessment process, in contrast to other childhood disorders, yet their expertise is central in the assessment and diagnosis of children with language disorder. Aims: This study aimed to provide a detailed qualitative description of the experiences of speech and language therapists involved in the assessment and diagnosis of children with Developmental Language Disorder. Methods & Procedures: The qualitative study included three focus groups to provide a credible and rich description of the experiences of speech and language therapists involved in the assessment of Developmental Language Disorder. The speech and language therapists who participated in the study were recruited from three NHS Trusts across the UK and all were directly involved in the assessment and diagnosis procedures. The lengths of practitioner experience ranged from 2 years to 38 years. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis in accordance with the principles set out by Braun & Clarke (2006). Outcomes & Results: The data showed a number of key themes concerning the experiences of speech and language therapists in assessing children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). These themes ranged from the participants’ experiences of the barriers to early referral, challenges for assessment and the concerns over continued future support. Conclusions & Implications: This study provides first-hand evidence from speech and language therapists in the assessment of children with Developmental Language Disorder, drawing together experiences from language practitioners from different regions. The findings provide insight to the barriers to referral, the potential variations in the assessment process, the role of practitioner expertise and the challenges faced them. The importance of early intervention, useful assessment tools and future support were expressed. Taken together, the results relate to some issues to be addressed on a practical level and a continuing need for initiatives to raise awareness of DLD in the public domain.Peer reviewe
Room-temperature near-infrared silicon carbide nanocrystalline emitters based on optically aligned spin defects
Bulk silicon carbide (SiC) is a very promising material system for
bio-applications and quantum sensing. However, its optical activity lies beyond
the near infrared spectral window for in-vivo imaging and fiber communications
due to a large forbidden energy gap. Here, we report the fabrication of SiC
nanocrystals and isolation of different nanocrystal fractions ranged from 600
nm down to 60 nm in size. The structural analysis reveals further fragmentation
of the smallest nanocrystals into ca. 10-nm-size clusters of high crystalline
quality, separated by amorphization areas. We use neutron irradiation to create
silicon vacancies, demonstrating near infrared photoluminescence. Finally, we
detect, for the first time, room-temperature spin resonances of these silicon
vacancies hosted in SiC nanocrystals. This opens intriguing perspectives to use
them not only as in-vivo luminescent markers, but also as magnetic field and
temperature sensors, allowing for monitoring various physical, chemical and

Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of the Konza Prairie Biological Station
Pitfall traps were used to determine diversity, seasonality, and numbers of burying beetles on the Konza Prairie Biological Station (KPBS) during the summers of 1997 and 1998. Traps were baited with either beef liver (1997) or whole mouse carcasses (1997 and 1998); significantly more carrion beetles were found in traps baited with carcasses. A total of 1003 carrion beetles, representing 8 species, were trapped over the course of 1556 trap nights. One of these species, Necrophila americana Linneaus, had not previously been recorded in Riley County. One additional species was found at sites where pitfall trap bait was discarded, bringing the total number of KPBS silphid species to 9. Bait age was an important determinant in attracting silphids to pitfall traps, as numbers of beetles in the trap continued to increase with bait age up to 6 days. Grassland topography (upland vs. lowland trap sites) significantly affected the numbers of carrion beetles trapped. Grassland bum history did not affect number of carrion beetles trapped, but did seem to influence species diversit

Active Device Fabrication Using Fiber Encapsulation Additive Manufacturing
Fiber Encapsulation Additive Manufacturing (FEAM) is a novel solid freeform
fabrication process in which a fiber and a matrix are co-deposited simultaneously within a single
printer along straight and curved 2-D and 3-D paths. Using a FEAM approach in which the fiber
is a metal wire and the matrix is a thermoplastic polymer, simple electromechanical devices such
as voice coils, inductive sensors, and membrane switches have been successfully produced. This
paper will present an overview of the FEAM process, describe several fabricated devices, and
discuss recent developments in controllably stopping and starting the wire, and in creating
electrical junctions between individual wires, which together enable much more complex devices
