Quality of care and drug surveillance : a data-driven perspective

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 119-128).In this thesis, we describe the use of medical insurance claims data in three important areas of medicine. First, we develop expert- trained statistical models of quality of care based on variables derived from insurance claims. Such models can be used to identify patients who are receiving poor care so that interventions can be arranged to improve their care. Second, we develop an algorithm that utilizes claims data to perform post-marketing surveillance of drugs to detect previously unknown side effects. The algorithm performed strongly in several realistic simulation tests, detecting side effects a large fraction of the time while controlling the false detection rate. Lastly, we use insurance claims data to improve our understanding of the costs of care for patients who suffer from depression and a chronic disease.by David Czerwinski.Ph.D
Towards effort quantification through VMS and observers' data: the case of shrimps trawlers in Mauritanian waters
The Spanish shrimp trawlers is one of the most important fleets operating in Mauritania. They target 3 species:
-Penaeus notialis (at 20-80 m depth)
-Parapenaeus longirostris (at 100-350 m depth)
-Aristeus varidens (at 400-800 m depth)
in 3 types of fishing operations that can be carried out during the same day.
A critical challenge is to define suitable metrics of effective fishing effort since logbooks only provide information of catches by day. Accurate CPUE obtained from these vessels could be considered good abundance indices of its target stocks, which is of paramount importance for assessment purposes. The objective of this analysis was to use Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) information to robustly infer fleet activity as well as estimate units of effort directed to each of the three target species of the Spanish trawlers operating within the EEZ of Mauritania. The estimates of trawling effort by target species obtained from VMS data show consistency in both values and temporal trends with those registered by observers on-board. The adoption of a consistent method for analysing VMS data will help to ensure that calculations of trawling effort are repeatable and comparable among studies

Continuous twin screw rheo-extrusion of an AZ91D magnesium alloy
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2012The twin screw rheo-extrusion (TSRE) is designed to take advantage of the nondendritc microstructure and thixotropic characterization of semisolid-metal slurries and produce simple metal profiles directly from melts. The extrusion equipment consists of a rotor-stator high shear slurry maker, a twin screw extruder, and a die assembly. The process is continuous and has a potential for significantly saving energy, manufacturing cost, and enhancing efficiency. The present investigation was carried out to study the process performance for processing rods of an AZ91D magnesium alloy and the microstructure evolution during processing. The semisolid slurry prepared by the process was characterized by uniformly distributed nondendritic granular primary phase particles. AZ91D rods with uniform and fine microstructures and moderate mechanical properties were produced. For the given slurry making parameters, decreasing extrusion temperature was found to improve microstructures and properties. The use of the task method in civic education of students

One of the most forward-looking methods, in this process, to simulate any situation and find an adequate solution, is knowledge method. The purpose of the article is to present work experience in the use of the task method in the educational system. The leading method in the study this problem was task method, which allows the most effectively, taking into account the trends in development of the education system, to address the problems of nature, namely development of civil position of the individual learning youth. The article submitted by the use of different types of tasks, in particular multicultural and civil, civil and axiological, participative and civil dealing with the challenges of education young students in educational organizations. The optimum system of tasks is developed, aimed at solving the problems of nature and their use of technology in the educational system. This article can be useful for teachers of general secondary and higher education, in the working out of the educational disciplines, as well as professionals working in the sphere of additional education
