Recent experiments on a small-angle/wide-angle X-ray scattering beam line at the ESRF
Recent results using a new combined small-angle/wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) beam line at the European Synchrotron Radiation Source (ESRF) will be presented. This beam line is specifically designed to be able to handle complicated sample environments required to perform time-resolved experiments mimicking processing conditions used in material science. Besides the attention that has been given to the interfacing of these sample environments to the beam line data acquisition system also the developments in detector technology will be discussed. The influence that a high count rate and low noise WAXS detector can have on the accuracy of experimental results in polymer crystallisation will be shown. It is shown that it is feasible to detect crystalline volume fractions as low as 10(-3)-10(-4) in polymeric systems
On the Role of Penning Ionization in Photoassociation Spectroscopy
We study the role of Penning ionization on the photoassociation spectra of
He(^3S)-He(^3S). The experimental setup is discussed and experimental results
for different intensities of the probe laser are shown. For modelling the
experimental results we consider coupled-channel calculations of the crossing
of the ground state with the excited state at the Condon point. The
coupled-channel calculations are first applied to model systems, where we
consider two coupled channels without ionization, two coupled channels with
ionization, and three coupled channels, for which only one of the excited
states is ionizing. Finally, coupled-channel calculations are applied to
photoassociation of He(^3S)-He(^3S) and good agreement is obtained between the

Progress with the LOFAR Imaging Pipeline
One of the science drivers of the new Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is
large-area surveys of the low-frequency radio sky. Realizing this goal requires
automated processing of the interferometric data, such that fully calibrated
images are produced by the system during survey operations. The LOFAR Imaging
Pipeline is the tool intended for this purpose, and is now undergoing
significant commissioning work. The pipeline is now functional as an automated
processing chain. Here we present several recent LOFAR images that have been
produced during the still ongoing commissioning period. These early LOFAR
images are representative of some of the science goals of the commissioning
