    A novel penalty-based reduced order modelling method for dynamic analysis of joint structures

    This work proposes a new reduced order modelling method to improve the computational efficiency for the dynamic simulation of a jointed structures with localized contact friction non-linearities. We reformulate the traditional equation of motion for a joint structure by linearising the non-linear system on the contact interface and augmenting the linearised system by introducing an internal non-linear penalty variable. The internal variable is used to compensate the possible non-linear effects from the contact interface. Three types of reduced basis are selected for the Galerkin projection, namely, the vibration modes (VMs) of the linearised system, static modes (SMs) and also the trial vector derivatives (TVDs) vectors. Using these reduced basis, it would allow the size of the internal variable to change correspondingly with the number of active non-linear DOFs. The size of the new reduced order model therefore can be automatically updated depending on the contact condition during the simulations. This would reduce significantly the model size when most of the contact nodes are in a stuck condition, which is actually often the case when a jointed structure vibrates. A case study using a 2D joint beam model is carried out to demonstrate the concept of the proposed method.     Odontogenic keratocysts located in the buccal mucosa : a description of two cases and review of the literature

    Odontogenic keratocysts make up 4%–12% of all odontogenic cysts. Most cysts are sporadic but sometimes they arise in the context of basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin syndrome). Most odontogenic keratocysts arise in the posterior region of the mandible, but they can occur anywhere in the jaw. In rare instances, they are located peripherally in the gingiva. Even more rare, they are found in the soft tissues of the mouth. There have been a few case reports and small case series of such peripheral odontogenic keratocysts. Some controversy exists as to whether these truly represent a peripheral counterpart of the intraosseous odontogenic keratocysts and if their origin is at all odontogenic. We hereby present two cases of peripheral odontogenic keratocysts, both being located in the soft tissue of the buccal mucosa, and review the literature on peripheral odontogenic keratocysts

    The effect of offering a third-trimester routine ultrasound on pregnancy-specific anxiety and mother-to-infant bonding in low-risk women : a pragmatic cluster-randomized controlled trial

    Background: Third-trimester routine ultrasounds are increasingly offered to monitor fetal growth. In addition to limited evidence for its clinical effectiveness, little is known about its importance for pregnancy-specific anxiety and mother-to-infant bonding. Methods: 1275 low-risk women participated in a Dutch nationwide pragmatic cluster-randomized trial and answered questionnaires on pregnancy-specific anxiety (PRAQ-R) and prenatal mother-to-infant bonding (MAAS) before and after a third-trimester routine ultrasound was offered to the intervention group. Linear mixed model regression analyses were performed to examine the effect of offering a third-trimester routine ultrasound on pregnancy-specific anxiety and mother-to-infant bonding. In addition, we examined whether the effect depended on maternal background characteristics and level of satisfaction with the ultrasound procedure. Results: We found no effect of offering a third-trimester routine ultrasound on pregnancy-specific anxiety and mother-to-infant bonding. However, interaction analyses showed that women with high levels of depressive symptoms at baseline and women who were very satisfied with the ultrasound procedure benefited somewhat more from offering a third-trimester routine ultrasound in terms of mother-to-infant bonding compared with women with low or no depressive symptoms, or less satisfied women. Conclusions: The relationship between offering a third-trimester routine ultrasound with pregnancy-specific anxiety and mother-to-infant bonding is limited. A beneficial effect only applies to some subgroups of women. This implies that, in terms of psychological outcomes, there are no counterarguments to implementing a third-trimester routine ultrasound. Strong evidence for offering all pregnant women a third-trimester routine ultrasound for psychological reasons, however, is lacking

    Singlet-ground-state paramagnetic centers in CuO2 layers as seen from Tm169 NMR in TmBa2Cu3O6+x superconductors

    The Tm169 nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in oxygen-deficient TmBa2Cu3O6+x compounds, as quenched and room-temperature annealed, has been measured at low temperatures. The results are consistent with the existence of paramagnetic centers in the CuO2 double layer, which have a nonmagnetic (singlet) ground state separated from an excited magnetic state by an energy gap of the order of 1 K. © 1995 The American Physical Society
