Computation of Kolmogorov's Constant in Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

    Get PDF
In this paper we calculate Kolmogorov's constant for magnetohydrodynamic turbulence to one loop order in perturbation theory using the direct interaction approximation technique of Kraichnan. We have computed the constants for various Eu(k)/Eb(k)E^u(k)/E^b(k), i.e., fluid to magnetic energy ratios when the normalized cross helicity is zero. We find that KK increases from 1.47 to 4.12 as we go from fully fluid case (Eb=0)(E^b=0) to a situation when Eu/Eb=0.5% E^u/E^b=0.5, then it decreases to 3.55 in a fully magnetic limit (Eu=0)(E^u=0). When Eu/Eb=1E^u/E^b=1, we find that K=3.43K=3.43.Comment: Latex, 10 pages, no figures, To appear in Euro. Phys. Lett., 199

Flow reversals in turbulent convection via vortex reconnections

We employ detailed numerical simulations to probe the mechanism of flow reversals in two-dimensional turbulent convection. We show that the reversals occur via vortex reconnection of two attracting corner rolls having same sign of vorticity, thus leading to major restructuring of the flow. Large fluctuations in heat transport are observed during the reversal due to this flow reconfiguration. The flow configurations during the reversals have been analyzed quantitatively using large-scale modes. Using these tools, we also show why flow reversals occur for a restricted range of Rayleigh and Prandt numbers

Model Independent Constraints on Non-electronic Flavors in the Solar Boron Neutrino Flux

We perform the most general model independent analysis of the latest 391-Day Salt Phase SNO Data Set incorporating the Super-Kamiokande ES flux measurement and obtain bounds on the antineutrino and sterile neutrino flux in the solar 8^{8}B neutrino flux reaching the detectors on the earth. The muon/ tauon antineutrino flux is found to be disallowed at 1.4σ\sigma C.L. The sterile flux is found to be non-zero at about 1.26 standard deviations.Comment: 8 pages and no figur

    Near-infrared spectropolarimetry of a delta-spot

Sunspots harboring umbrae of both magnetic polarities within a common penumbra (delta-spots) are often but not always related to flares. We present first near-infrared (NIR) observations (Fe I 1078.3 nm and Si I 1078.6 nm spectra) obtained with the Tenerife Infrared Polarimeter (TIP) at the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) in Tenerife on 2012 June 17, which afford accurate and sensitive diagnostics to scrutinize the complex fields along the magnetic neutral line of a delta-spot within active region NOAA 11504. We examine the vector magnetic field, line-of-sight (LOS) velocities, and horizontal proper motions of this rather inactive delta-spot. We find a smooth transition of the magnetic vector field from the main umbra to that of opposite polarity (delta-umbra), but a discontinuity of the horizontal magnetic field at some distance from the delta-umbra on the polarity inversion line. The magnetic field decreases faster with height by a factor of two above the delta-umbra. The latter is surrounded by its own Evershed flow. The Evershed flow coming from the main umbra ends at a line dividing the spot into two parts. This line is marked by the occurrence of central emission in the Ca II 854.2 nm line. Along this line, high chromospheric LOS-velocities of both signs appear. We detect a shear flow within the horizontal flux transport velocities parallel to the dividing line.Comment: 4 pages, will appear as Letter in Astronomy & Astrophysic

Mid-Infrared line diagnostics of Active Galaxies -- A spectroscopic AGN survey with ISO-SWS

    Get PDF
We present medium resolution (R approx. 1500) ISO-SWS 2.4--45 micron spectra of a sample of 29 galaxies with active nuclei. This data set is rich in fine structure emission lines tracing the narrow line regions and (circum-)nuclear star formation regions, and it provides a coherent spectroscopic reference for future extragalactic studies in the mid-infrared. We use the data set to briefly discuss the physical conditions in the narrow line regions (density, temperature, excitation, line profiles) and to test for possible differences between AGN sub-types. Our main focus is on new tools for determining the propertibes of dusty galaxies and on the AGN-starburst connection. We present mid-IR line ratio diagrams which can be used to identify composite (starburst + AGN) sources and to distinguish between emission excited by active nuclei and emission from (circum-nuclear) star forming regions. For instance, line ratios of high to low excitation lines like [O IV]25.9um/[Ne II]12.8um, that have been used to probe for AGNs in dusty objects, can be examined in more detail and with better statistics now. In addition, we present two-dimensional diagnostic diagrams that are fully analogous to classical optical diagnostic diagrams, but better suited for objects with high extinction. Finally, we discuss correlations of mid-infrared line fluxes to the mid- and far-infrared continuum. We compare these relations to similar relations in starburst galaxies in order to examine the contribution of AGNs to the bolometric luminosities of their host galaxies. The spectra are available in electronic form from the authors.Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for A&

Similarity Measure Development for Case-Based Reasoning- A Data-driven Approach

In this paper, we demonstrate a data-driven methodology for modelling the local similarity measures of various attributes in a dataset. We analyse the spread in the numerical attributes and estimate their distribution using polynomial function to showcase an approach for deriving strong initial value ranges of numerical attributes and use a non-overlapping distribution for categorical attributes such that the entire similarity range [0,1] is utilized. We use an open source dataset for demonstrating modelling and development of the similarity measures and will present a case-based reasoning (CBR) system that can be used to search for the most relevant similar cases
