    Insulin Antigenicity

Thus we have seen that evidence of insulin antigenicity in one or more forms is present in most individuals receiving intermediate insulins for six weeks or longer. A number of clinical manifestations of insulin antigenicity and their treatment have been discussed

The State of Insulin in the Blood

    Get PDF
Diabetes mellitus has been reviewed as a group of conditions with impaired function of one or more portions of a feed-back system involving the release and utilization of insulin. It is hoped that this may form a useful scheme by which we can study and understand a number of complex metabolic states which we must still collectively refer to as diabetes mellitus

    Constitutional Law—Balancing Test in Durational Residence Equal Protection Analysis—Williams v. Zobel, 619 P.2d 448 (Alaska 1980), prob. juris. noted, 101 S. Ct. 1344 (1981)

This note analyzes the Zobel II opinion and concludes that it was correctly decided both under the two-tier analysis employed by the United States Supreme Court and the balancing approach adopted by the Alaska court. Since this case is before the United States Supreme Court on appeal, this note urges the Court to adopt the Alaska balancing test for durational residence equal protection cases as a replacement for the traditional two-tier analysis

Indirect observation of unobservable interstellar molecules

    Get PDF
It is suggested that the abundances of neutral non-polar interstellar molecules unobservable by radio astronomy can be systematically determined by radio observation of the protonated ions. As an example, observed N2H(+) column densities are analyzed to infer molecular nitrogen abundances in dense interstellar clouds. The chemistries and expected densities of the protonated ions of O2, C2, CO2, C2H2 and CH4 are then discussed. Microwave transition frequencies fo HCO2(+) and C2H3(+) are estimated, and a preliminary astronomical search for HCO2(+) is described

Predicting recessions using trends in the yield spread

    Get PDF
The yield spread, measured as the difference between long- and short-term interest rates, is widely regarded as one of the strongest predictors of economic recessions. In this paper, we propose an enhanced recession prediction model that incorporates trends in the value of the yield spread. We expect our model to generate stronger recession signals because a steadily declining value of the yield spread typically indicates growing pessimism associated with the reduced future business activity. We capture trends in the yield spread by considering both the level of the yield spread at a lag of 12 months as well as its value at each of the previous two quarters leading up to the forecast origin, and we evaluate its predictive abilities using both logit and artificial neural network models. Our results indicate that models incorporating information from the time series of the yield spread correctly predict future recession periods much better than models only considering the spread value as of the forecast origin. Furthermore, the results are strongest for our artificial neural network model and logistic regression model that includes interaction terms, which we confirm using both a blocked cross-validation technique as well as an expanding estimation window approach

The Difficulties of Filming Syrian Refugee Populations Living in Jordan: Obstacles to Objectivity and Accuracy in Reporting

This project seeks to explain and address the challenges inherent in filming and documenting Syrian refugee populations in Jordan. This project will take the form of a narrative research paper in conjunction with a video component comprised of the first-hand accounts of several refugees who consented to sharing their stories on camera. I went, along with my brother Louis (a filmmaker), to Jordan to document firsthand the stories of Syrian refugees in their own words. We were invited to film for the Women ASPIRE project of an organization called ASPIRE (Advancing Solutions in Policy, Implementation, Research, and Engagement for Refugees), a Columbia University based organization with which I have formerly worked, interned, volunteered, and traveled. I draw upon contemporary literature on the topic of the refugee crisis with a focus on the impact it has had on women. I make reference to personally taken footage of several Syrian refugee men and women interviewees living in various living arrangements in Jordan. I elucidate the many challenges and obstacles to accurate, objective reporting of the current plight of Syrian refugees living in Jordan
