    Effects of melatonin on both testicular regeneration and recovery of spermatogenesis in busulfan-treated rats

All rights reserved.Testicular damage is one of the most hazardous effects of chemotherapy as it is frequently associated with oligozoospermia and azoospermia. This study aimed at evaluating the protective effect of melatonin in a rat model of busulfan-induced testicular injury. Rats were divided into four groups: control, melatonin, busulfan, busulfan plus melatonin. After 15 days, the semen was collected from the epididymis and testes were assessed. Sperm removed from cauda epididymis and analyzed for sperm count and viability. Testis tissues were also removed, fixed in formalin and were embedded in paraffin. Sections of testis tissue were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for histological examination and prepared for TUNEL (Terminal deoxynucleotide transferase dUTP Nick End Labeling) assay to detect apoptosis and PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigenassay) to detect proliferation cells. Serum and testes supernatants were separated to detect testosteron level and oxidative stress parameters. In histological examination, degenerative changes in seminiferous tubules were observed in the experimental groups. In biochemical examination, the total oxidant status (TOS) levels in Busulfan group were significantly higher than in the control group while the total antioxidant status (TAS) levels of all the groups were similar. In conclusion, the beneficial properties of melatonin treatment by its potent anti-oxidants may reduce adverse effects of chemotherapy in the reproductive system in a rodent system

    Investigation of the effectiveness of the Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment-Troponin scores in non- ST-elevation myocardial infarction

    OBJECTIVE: A reliable predictor is needed for non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients with high mortality risk. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events and Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment-Troponin (qSOFA-T) scores on in-hospital mortality rate in non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients. METHODS: This is an observational and retrospective study. Patients admitted to the emergency department with acute coronary syndrome were evaluated consecutively. A total of 914 patients with non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction who met inclusion criteria were included in the study. The Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events and qSOFA scores were calculated and investigated its contribution to prognostic accuracy by adding cardiac troponin I (cTnI) concentration to the qSOFA score. The threshold value of the investigated prognostic markers was calculated by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: We found the in-hospital mortality rate to be 3.4%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events and qSOFA-T is 0.840 and 0.826, respectively. CONCLUSION: The qSOFA-T score, which can be calculated easily, quickly, and inexpensively and obtained by adding the cTnI level, had excellent discriminatory power for predicting in-hospital mortality. Difficulty in calculating the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events score, which requires a computer, can be considered a limitation of this method. Thus, patients with a high qSOFA-T score are at an increased risk of short-term mortality. KEYWORDS: Acute coronary syndrome. Troponin I. Mortality. Non-ST elevated myocardial infarction

    Evaluation of patients admitted to the emergency department after Coronavac (Sinovac) vaccination?

    To evaluate the symptoms and laboratory parameters of patients admitted to the emergency department after CoronaVac (Sinovac) vaccination. Complaints, demographic characteristics, laboratory tests, interventions, and outcomes of patients admitted to the emergency department within seven days of receiving the CoronaVac (Sinovac) were all evaluated. Pain at the injection site, swelling, redness, and pain in the injected arm were expected side effects of the vaccination. In this study, a total of six people had syncope following the vaccination, one of whom developed an allergic reaction. The most common adverse events in non-geriatrics were fatigue, headache, fever, and abdominal pain, while in geriatric patients’ fatigue, headache, chest pain, and dyspnea were most common, with fever falling in the last place. Rare symptoms following vaccination included syncope and urticaria. It is necessary to be prepared for the side effects that may occur during mass vaccination against COVID-19.
