NGC 602 Environment, Kinematics and Origins
The young star cluster NGC 602 and its associated HII region, N90, formed in
a relatively isolated and diffuse environment in the Wing of the Small
Magellanic Cloud. Its isolation from other regions of massive star formation
and the relatively simple surrounding HI shell structure allows us to constrain
the processes that may have led to its formation and to study conditions
leading to massive star formation. We use images from Hubble Space Telescope
and high resolution echelle spectrographic data from the Anglo-Australian
Telescope along with 21-cm neutral hydrogen (HI) spectrum survey data and the
shell catalogue derived from it to establish a likely evolutionary scenario
leading to the formation of NGC 602. We identify a distinct HI cloud component
that is likely the progenitor cloud of the cluster and HII region which
probably formed in blister fashion from the cloud's periphery. We also find
that the past interaction of HI shells can explain the current location and
radial velocity of the nebula. The surrounding Interstellar Medium is diffuse
and dust-poor as demonstrated by a low visual optical depth throughout the
nebula and an average HI density of the progenitor cloud estimated at 1 cm^-3.
These conditions suggest that the NGC 602 star formation event was produced by
compression and turbulence associated with HI shell interactions. It therefore

Inhibition of foxo and minibrain in Dopaminergic Neurons Can Model Aspects of Parkinson Disease in Drosophila melanogaster
Abstract Symptoms of Parkinson Disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disease, emerge due to degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. Recently, a genome wide study revealed a role for a foxo transcription factor in PD. In the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, we have attempted 1) to inhibit the sole Drosophila homologue of foxo through the directed expression of a stable inducible RNAi transgene and 2) to indirectly increase foxo transcription activity through the inhibition of the kinase minibrain (mnb), a foxo transcriptional inhibitor. To evaluate the lifetime consequences upon the flies, longevity assays and locomotion over time assays were conducted. The inhibition of foxo by foxo-RNAi decreases life span significantly when expressed under the control of Tyrosine Hydroxylase-Gal4 (TH-Gal4). The targeted expression of mnb-RNAi, in the dopaminergic neurons, with an expected loss of suppression of foxo transcriptional activity, results in a significant loss of climbing ability. Thus alteration of foxo activity, both by RNA-inhibition and by down-regulation of an inhibitor of foxo, minibrain, produces novel Drosophila models of Parkinson Disease. HI Bright Galaxies in the Southern Zone of Avoidance
A blind survey for HI bright galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance, (212
deg < l < 36 deg; |b| < 5 deg), has been made with the 21 cm multibeam receiver
on the Parkes 64 m radiotelescope. The survey, sensitive to normal spiral
galaxies to a distance of about 40 Mpc and more nearby dwarfs, detected 110
galaxies. Of these, 67 have no counterparts in the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic
Database. In general, the uncataloged galaxies lie behind thicker obscuration
than do the cataloged objects. All of the newly-discovered galaxies have HI
flux integrals more than an order of magnitude lower than the Circinus galaxy.
The survey recovers the Puppis cluster and foreground group (Kraan-Korteweg &
Huchtmeier 1992), and the Local Void remains empty. The HI mass function
derived for the sample is satisfactorily fit by a Schechter function with
parameters alpha = 1.51 +- 0.12, Phi* = 0.006 +- 0.003, and log M* = 9.7 +-

The stellar velocity dispersion in the inner 1.3 disk scale-lengths of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449
We present measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion in the inner 1
arcmin radius (1.3 disk scale-lengths) of the irregular galaxy NGC 4449
determined from long-slit absorption-line spectra. The average observed
dispersion is 29 +/-2 km/s, the same as predicted from NGC 4449's luminosity.
No significant rotation in the stars is detected. If we assume a maximum
rotation speed of the stars from the model determined from the gas kinematics
of Hunter et al. (2002), the ratio V_max/sigma_z measured globally is 3. This
ratio is comparable to values measured in spiral galaxies, and implies that the
stellar disk in NGC 4449 is kinematically relatively cold. The intrinsic
minor-to-major axis ratio (b/a)_0 is predicted to be in the range 0.3-0.6,
similar to values derived from the distribution of observed b/a of Im galaxies.
However, V/sigma_z measured locally is 0.5-1.1, and so the circular velocity of
NGC 4449 is comparable or less than the velocity of the stars within the
central 1.3 disk scale-lengths of the galaxy.Comment: To be published in ApJ, Nov 200
The Radio Afterglow and the Host Galaxy of the X-Ray Rich GRB 981226
We report the discovery of a radio transient VLA 232937.2-235553, coincident
with the proposed X-ray afterglow for the gamma-ray burst GRB 981226. This GRB
has the highest ratio of X-ray to gamma-ray fluence of all the GRBs detected by
BeppoSAX so far and yet no corresponding optical transient was detected. The
radio light curve of VLA 232937.2-235553 is qualitatively similar to that of
several other radio afterglows. At the sub-arcsecond position provided by the
radio detection, optical imaging reveals an extended R=24.9 mag object, which
we identify as the host galaxy of GRB 981226. Afterglow models which invoke a
jet-like geometry for the outflow or require an ambient medium with a radial
density dependence, such as that produced by a wind from a massive star, are
both consistent with the radio data. Furthermore, we show that the observed
properties of the radio afterglow can explain the absence of an optical
transient without the need for large extinction local to the GRB.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The Arecibo L-band Feed Array Zone of Avoidance Survey I: Precursor Observations through the Inner and Outer Galaxy
The Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) is being used to conduct a low-Galactic
latitude survey, to map the distribution of galaxies and large-scale structures
behind the Milky Way through detection of galaxies' neutral hydrogen (HI) 21-cm
emission. This Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) survey finds new HI galaxies which lie
hidden behind the Milky Way, and also provides redshifts for partially-obscured
galaxies known at other wavelengths. Before the commencement of the full
survey, two low-latitude precursor regions were observed, totalling 138 square
degrees, with 72 HI galaxies detected. Detections through the inner Galaxy
generally have no cataloged counterparts in any other waveband, due to the
heavy extinction and stellar confusion. Detections through the outer Galaxy are
more likely to have 2MASS counterparts. We present the results of these
precursor observations, including a catalog of the detected galaxies, with
their HI parameters. The survey sensitivity is well described by a flux- and
linewidth-dependent signal-to-noise ratio of 6.5. ALFA ZOA galaxies which also
have HI measurements in the literature show good agreement between our
measurements and previous work. The inner Galaxy precursor region was chosen to
overlap the HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey so ALFA performance could be
quickly assessed. The outer Galaxy precursor region lies north of the Parkes
sky. Low-latitude large-scale structure in this region is revealed, including
an overdensity of galaxies near l = 183 deg and between 5000 - 6000 km/s in the
ZOA. The full ALFA ZOA survey will be conducted in two phases: a shallow survey
using the observing techniques of the precursor observations, and also a deep
phase with much longer integration time, with thousands of galaxies predicted

New HI-detected Galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance
We present the first results of a blind HI survey for galaxies in the
southern Zone of Avoidance with a multibeam receiver on the Parkes telescope.
This survey is eventually expected to catalog several thousand galaxies within
Galactic latitude |b|<5 degrees, mostly unrecognised before due to Galactic
extinction and confusion. We present here results of the first three detections
to have been imaged with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The
galaxies all lie near Galactic longitude 325 degrees and were selected because
of their large angular sizes, up to 1.3 degrees. Linear sizes range from 53 to
108 kpc. The first galaxy is a massive 5.7x10^11 solar mass disk galaxy with a
faint optical counterpart, SGC 1511.1--5249. The second is probably an
interacting group of galaxies straddling the Galactic equator. No optical
identification is possible. The third object appears to be an interacting pair
of low column density galaxies, possibly belonging to an extended Circinus or
Centaurus A galaxy group. No optical counterpart has been seen despite the
predicted extinction (A(B) = 2.7 - 4.4 mag) not being excessive. We discuss the
implications of the results, in particular the low HI column densities (~10^19

A radio-polarisation and rotation measure study of the Gum Nebula and its environment
The Gum Nebula is 36 degree wide shell-like emission nebula at a distance of
only 450 pc. It has been hypothesised to be an old supernova remnant, fossil
HII region, wind-blown bubble, or combination of multiple objects. Here we
investigate the magneto-ionic properties of the nebula using data from recent
surveys: radio-continuum data from the NRAO VLA and S-band Parkes All Sky
Surveys, and H-alpha data from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas. We model
the upper part of the nebula as a spherical shell of ionised gas expanding into
the ambient medium. We perform a maximum-likelihood Markov chain Monte-Carlo
fit to the NVSS rotation measure data, using the H-halpha data to constrain
average electron density in the shell . Assuming a latitudinal background
gradient in RM we find , angular radius
, shell thickness
, ambient magnetic field strength
and warm gas filling factor
. We constrain the local, small-scale (~260 pc)
pitch-angle of the ordered Galactic magnetic field to
, which represents a significant
deviation from the median field orientation on kiloparsec scales
(~-7.2). The moderate compression factor X=6.0\,^{+5.1}_{-2.5} at
the edge of the H-alpha shell implies that the 'old supernova remnant' origin
is unlikely. Our results support a model of the nebula as a HII region around a
wind-blown bubble. Analysis of depolarisation in 2.3 GHz S-PASS data is
consistent with this hypothesis and our best-fitting values agree well with

S-band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS): survey description and maps
We present the S-Band Polarization All Sky Survey (S-PASS), a survey of
polarized radio emission over the southern sky at Dec~ taken with
the Parkes radio telescope at 2.3~GHz. The main aim was to observe at a
frequency high enough to avoid strong depolarization at intermediate Galactic
latitudes (still present at 1.4 GHz) to study Galactic magnetism, but low
enough to retain ample Signal-to-Noise ratio (S/N) at high latitudes for
extragalactic and cosmological science. We developed a new scanning strategy
based on long azimuth scans, and a corresponding map-making procedure to make
recovery of the overall mean signal of Stokes and possible, a
long-standing problem with polarization observations. We describe the scanning
strategy, map-making procedure, and validation tests. The overall mean signal
is recovered with a precision better than 0.5\%. The maps have a mean
sensitivity of 0.81 mK on beam--size scales and show clear polarized signals,
typically to within a few degrees of the Galactic plane, with ample S/N
everywhere (the typical signal in low emission regions is 13 mK, and 98.6\% of
the pixels have S/N ). The largest depolarization areas are in the inner
Galaxy, associated with the Sagittarius Arm. We have also computed a Rotation
Measure map combining S-PASS with archival data from the WMAP and Planck
experiments. A Stokes map has been generated, with a sensitivity limited to
