NTT infrared imaging of star cluster candidates towards the central parts of the Galaxy
We address the issue whether the central parts of the Galaxy harbour young
clusters other than Arches, Quintuplet and the Nuclear Young Cluster. A large
sample of centrally projected cluster candidates has been recently identified
from the 2MASS J, H and Ks Atlas. We provide a catalogue of higher angular
resolution and deeper images for 57 2MASS cluster candidates, obtained with the
near-IR camera SOFI at the ESO NTT telescope. We classify 10 objects as star
clusters, some of them deeply embedded in gas and/or dust clouds. Three other
objects are probably star clusters, although the presence of dust in the field
does not exclude the possibility of their being field stars seen through
low-absorption regions. Eleven objects are concentrations of stars in areas of
little or no gas, and are classified as dissolving cluster candidates. Finally,
31 objects turned out to be the blend of a few bright stars, not resolved as
such in the low resolution 2MASS images. By combining the above results with
other known objects we provide an updated sample of 42 embedded clusters and
candidates projected within 7 degrees. As a first step we study Object 11 of
Dutra & Bica (2000) projected at approximately 1 degree from the nucleus. We
present H and Ks photometry and study the colour-magnitude diagram and
luminosity function. Object 11 appears to be a less massive cluster than Arches
or Quintuplet, and it is located at a distance from the Sun d=8 kpc, with a

Effective Action for QED with Fermion Self-Interaction in D=2 and D=3 Dimensions
In this work we discuss the effect of the quartic fermion self-interaction of
Thirring type in QED in D=2 and D=3 dimensions. This is done through the
computation of the effective action up to quadratic terms in the photon field.
We analyze the corresponding nonlocal photon propagators nonperturbatively in %
\frac{k}{m}, where k is the photon momentum and m the fermion mass. The poles
of the propagators were determined numerically by using the Mathematica
software. In D=2 there is always a massless pole whereas for strong enough
Thirring coupling a massive pole may appear . For D=3 there are three regions
in parameters space. We may have one or two massive poles or even no pole at
all. The inter-quark static potential is computed analytically in D=2. We
notice that the Thirring interaction contributes with a screening term to the
confining linear potential of massive QED_{2}. In D=3 the static potential must
be calculated numerically. The screening nature of the massive QED
prevails at any distance, indicating that this is a universal feature of % D=3
electromagnetic interaction. Our results become exact for an infinite number of

Quadratic Effective Action for QED in D=2,3 Dimensions
We calculate the effective action for Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) in D=2,3
dimensions at the quadratic approximation in the gauge fields. We analyse the
analytic structure of the corresponding nonlocal boson propagators
nonperturbatively in k/m. In two dimensions for any nonzero fermion mass, we
end up with one massless pole for the gauge boson . We also calculate in D=2
the effective potential between two static charges separated by a distance L
and find it to be a linearly increasing function of L in agreement with the
bosonized theory (massive Sine-Gordon model). In three dimensions we find
nonperturbatively in k/m one massive pole in the effective bosonic action
leading to screening. Fitting the numerical results we derive a simple
expression for the functional dependence of the boson mass upon the
dimensionless parameter e^{2}/m .Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Automated search for galactic star clusters in large multiband surveys: I. Discovery of 15 new open clusters in the Galactic anticenter region
Aims: According to some estimations, there are as many as 100000 open
clusters in the Galaxy, but less than 2000 of them have been discovered,
measured, and cataloged. We plan to undertake data mining of multiwavelength
surveys to find new star clusters. Methods: We have developed a new method to
search automatically for star clusters in very large stellar catalogs, which is
based on convolution with density functions. We have applied this method to a
subset of the Two Micron All Sky Survey catalog toward the Galactic anticenter.
We also developed a method to verify whether detected stellar groups are real
star clusters, which tests whether the stars that form the spatial density peak
also fall onto a single isochrone in the color-magnitude diagram. By fitting an
isochrone to the data, we estimate at the same time the main physical
parameters of a cluster: age, distance, color excess. Results: For the present
paper, we carried out a detailed analysis of 88 overdensity peaks detected in a
field of degrees near the Galactic anticenter. From this analysis,
15 overdensities were confirmed to be new open clusters and the physical and
structural parameters were determined for 12 of them; 10 of them were
previously suspected to be open clusters by Kronberger (2006) and Froebrich
(2007). The properties were also determined for 13 yet-unstudied known open
clusters, thus almost tripling the sample of open clusters with studied
parameters in the anticenter. The parameters determined with this method showed
a good agreement with published data for a set of well-known clusters.Comment: accepted to A&
Automated search for star clusters in large multiband surveys: II. Discovery and investigation of open clusters in the Galactic plane
Automated search for star clusters in J,H,K_s data from 2MASS catalog has
been performed using the method developed by Koposov et. al (2008). We have
found and verified 153 new clusters in the interval of the galactic latitude
-24 < b < 24 degrees. Color excesses E(B-V), distance moduli and ages were
determined for 130 new and 14 yet-unstudied known clusters. In this paper, we
publish a catalog of coordinates, diameters, and main parameters of all the
clusters under study. A special web-site available at http://ocl.sai.msu.ru has
