    Geographic and socioeconomic variation in the onset of decline of coronary heart disease mortality in white women.

    BACKGROUND. Regional, metropolitan, and socioeconomic factors related to the onset of decline of coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality among White women are reported. Such studies are important for planning population-level interventions. METHODS. Mortality data for 1962 to 1978 were used, to estimate the year of onset of decline. Ecological analyses of socioeconomic data from the US census were used to emphasize structural and organizational aspects of changes in disease, rather than as a substitute for an individual-level design. RESULTS. Onset of decline of CHD mortality among White women was estimated to have occurred by 1962 in 53% of 507 state economic areas (SEAs), ranging from 79% in the Northeast to 39% in the South. Metropolitan areas experienced earlier onset of decline than did nonmetropolitan areas. Average income, education, and occupational levels were highest in early onset areas and declined across onset categories. CONCLUSIONS. The results provide additional evidence for previously observed geographic and social patterns of CHD decline. Emphasis on structural economic factors determining the shape of the CHD epidemic curve does not detract from the medical importance of risk factors, but underscores the importance of community development to public health improvements. The results are consistent with the idea that the course of the CHD epidemic in the United States has been strongly influenced by socio-economic development

    Calculated Electron Fluxes at Airplane Altitudes

    A precision measurement of atmospheric electron fluxes has been performed on a Japanese commercial airliner (Enomoto, {\it et al.}, 1991). We have performed a monte carlo calculation of the cosmic ray secondary electron fluxes expected in this experiment. The monte carlo uses the hadronic portion of our neutrino flux cascade program combined with the electromagnetic cascade portion of the CERN library program GEANT. Our results give good agreement with the data, provided we boost the overall normalization of the primary cosmic ray flux by 12\% over the normalization used in the neutrino flux calculation.Comment: in REVTEX, 12 pages + 4 figures available upon reques

    Analytic Results for the Gravitational Radiation from a Class of Cosmic String Loops

    Cosmic string loops are defined by a pair of periodic functions a{\bf a} and b{\bf b}, which trace out unit-length closed curves in three-dimensional space. We consider a particular class of loops, for which a{\bf a} lies along a line and b{\bf b} lies in the plane orthogonal to that line. For this class of cosmic string loops one may give a simple analytic expression for the power γ\gamma radiated in gravitational waves. We evaluate γ\gamma exactly in closed form for several special cases: (1) b{\bf b} a circle traversed MM times; (2) b{\bf b} a regular polygon with NN sides and interior vertex angle π2πM/N\pi-2\pi M/N; (3) b{\bf b} an isosceles triangle with semi-angle θ\theta.     Experimenting with ecosystem interaction networks in search of threshold potentials in real-world marine ecosystems

    Thresholds profoundly affect our understanding and management of ecosystem dynamics, but we have yet to develop practical techniques to assess the risk that thresholds will be crossed. Combining ecological knowledge of critical system interdependencies with a large-scale experiment, we tested for breaks in the ecosystem interaction network to identify threshold potential in real-world ecosystem dynamics. Our experiment with the bivalves Macomona liliana and Austrovenus stutchburyi on marine sandflats in New Zealand demonstrated that reductions in incident sunlight changed the interaction network between sediment biogeochemical fluxes, productivity, and macrofauna. By demonstrating loss of positive feedbacks and changes in the architecture of the network, we provide mechanistic evidence that stressors lead to break points in dynamics, which theory predicts predispose a system to a critical transition

    Altered patterns of retinoblastoma gene product expression in adult soft-tissue sarcomas.

    Altered expression of the retinoblastoma (RB) tumour-suppressor gene product (pRB) has been detected in sporadic bone and soft-tissue sarcomas. Earlier studies, analysing small cohorts of sarcoma patients, have suggested that these alterations are more commonly associated with high-grade tumours, metastatic lesions and poorer survival. This study was designed to re-examine the prevalence and clinical significance of altered pRB expression in a large and selected group of soft-tissue sarcomas from 174 adult patients. Representative tissue sections from these sarcomas were analysed by immunohistochemistry using a well-characterised anti-pRB monoclonal antibody. Tumours were considered to have a positive pRB phenotype only when pure nuclear staining was demonstrated, and cases were segregated into one of three groups. Group 1 (n = 36) were patients whose tumours have minimal or undetectable pRB nuclear staining (< 20% of tumour cells) and were considered pRB negative. Patients with tumours staining in a heterogeneous pattern (20-79% of tumour cells) were classified as group 2 (n = 99). The staining of group 3 (n = 39) was strongly positive with a homogeneous pRB nuclear immunoreactivity (80-100% of tumour cells). pRB alterations were frequently observed in both low- and high-grade lesions. Altered pRB expression did not correlate with known predictors of survival and was not itself an independent predictor of outcome in the long-term follow-up. These findings support earlier observations that alterations of pRB expression are common events in soft-tissue sarcomas; nevertheless, long-term follow-up results indicate that altered patterns of pRB expression do not influence clinical outcome of patients affected with soft-tissue sarcomas. It is postulated that RB alterations are primary events in human sarcomas and may be involved in tumorigenesis or early phases of tumour progression in these neoplasias

    Unconventional superstring derived E6_{\bf 6} models and neutrino phenomenology

    Conventional superstring derived E6_6 models can accommodate small neutrino masses if a discrete symmetry is imposed which forbids tree level Dirac neutrino masses but allows for radiative mass generation. Since the only possible symmetries of this kind are known to be generation dependent, we explore the possibility that the three sets of light states in each generation do not have the same assignments with respect to the 27 of E6E_6, leading to non universal gauge interactions under the additional U(1)U(1)' factors for the known fermions. We argue that models realising such a scenario are viable, with their structure being constrained mainly by the requirement of the absence of flavor changing neutral currents in the Higgs sector. Moreover, in contrast to the standard case, rank 6 models are not disfavoured with respect to rank 5. By requiring the number of light neutral states to be minimal, these models have an almost unique pattern of neutrino masses and mixings. We construct a model based on the unconventional assignment scenario in which (with a natural choice of the parameters) m_{\nut}\sim O(10)eV is generated at one loop, m_{\num} is generated at two loops and lies in a range interesting for the solar neutrino problem, and \nue remains massless. In addition, since baryon and lepton number are conserved, there is no proton decay in the model. To illustrate the non-standard phenomenology implied by our scheme we also discuss a second scenario in which an attempt for solving the solar neutrino puzzle with matter enhanced oscillations and practically massless neutrinos can be formulated, and in which peculiar effects for the \num --> \nut conversion of the upward-going atmospheric neutrinos could arise as well.Comment: Plain Tex, 33 pages, 3 PostScript figures (uses epsf.tex).     Pubertal development in healthy children is mirrored by DNA methylation patterns in peripheral blood

    Puberty marks numerous physiological processes which are initiated by central activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, followed by development of secondary sexual characteristics. To a large extent, pubertal timing is heritable, but current knowledge of genetic polymorphisms only explains few months in the large inter-individual variation in the timing of puberty. We have analysed longitudinal genome-wide changes in DNA methylation in peripheral blood samples (n = 102) obtained from 51 healthy children before and after pubertal onset. We show that changes in single methylation sites are tightly associated with physiological pubertal transition and altered reproductive hormone levels. These methylation sites cluster in and around genes enriched for biological functions related to pubertal development. Importantly, we identified that methylation of the genomic region containing the promoter of TRIP6 was co-ordinately regulated as a function of pubertal development. In accordance, immunohistochemistry identified TRIP6 in adult, but not pre-pubertal, testicular Leydig cells and circulating TRIP6 levels doubled during puberty. Using elastic net prediction models, methylation patterns predicted pubertal development more accurately than chronological age. We demonstrate for the first time that pubertal attainment of secondary sexual characteristics is mirrored by changes in DNA methylation patterns in peripheral blood. Thus, modulations of the epigenome seem involved in regulation of the individual pubertal timing

    Matter effects in long baseline experiments, the flavor content of the heaviest (or lightest) neutrino and the sign of Delta m^2

    The neutrinos of long baseline beams travel inside the Earth's crust where the density is approximately rho = 2.8 g cm^-3. If electron neutrinos participate in the oscillations, matter effects will modify the oscillation probabilities with respect to the vacuum case. Depending on the sign of Delta m^2 an MSW resonance will exist for neutrinos or anti-neutrinos with energy approximately E_nu(res) = 4.7 |\Delta m^2|/(10^-3 eV^2) GeV. For Delta m^2 in the interval indicated by the Super-Kamiokande experiment this energy range is important for the proposed long baseline experiments. For positive Delta m^2 the most important effects of matter are a 9% (25%) enhancement of the transition probability P(nu_mu -> nu_e) for the KEK to Kamioka (Fermilab to Minos and CERN to Gran Sasso) beam(s) in the energy region where the probability has its first maximum, and an approximately equal suppression of P(antinu_mu -> antinu_e). For negative Delta m^2 the effects for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos are interchanged. Producing beams of neutrinos and antineutrinos and measuring the oscillation probabilities for both (nu_mu -> nu_e) and (antinu_mu -> antinu_e) transitions can solve the sign ambiguity in the determination of Delta m^2.Comment: Latex, 28 pages, 12 postscript figure
