The physics of cellular synthesis, growth and division

Three areas of research in NASA'S University Program are described. Primitive terrestrial living cells were studied as a guide to the kind of cells to look for in extraterrestrial life. Experiments in zero gravity conditions are described with emphasis upon effects on small organisms. The effects of ionizing radiation on cells are studied so that it will be possible to predict dosages which can be tolerated by humans with no permanent damage

Space station experiment definition: Advanced power system test bed

    Get PDF
A conceptual design for an advanced photovoltaic power system test bed was provided and the requirements for advanced photovoltaic power system experiments better defined. Results of this study will be used in the design efforts conducted in phase B and phase C/D of the space station program so that the test bed capabilities will be responsive to user needs. Critical PV and energy storage technologies were identified and inputs were received from the idustry (government and commercial, U.S. and international) which identified experimental requirements. These inputs were used to develop a number of different conceptual designs. Pros and cons of each were discussed and a strawman candidate identified. A preliminary evolutionary plan, which included necessary precursor activities, was established and cost estimates presented which would allow for a successful implementation to the space station in the 1994 time frame

Brief Consultation to Families of Treatment Refusers with Symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Does It Impact Family Accommodation and Quality of Life?

Family members are often directly and significantly impacted by the restrictive demands of OCD, a frequently disabling disorder. Family accommodation behaviors (i.e., doing things for or because of the OCD sufferer that a person would not normally do) are associated with dysfunction, including poorer treatment responses in OCD sufferers and greater distress in family members. Although evidence suggests family-based intervention can reduce symptoms in OCD sufferers who participate in treatment, there is a lack of research documenting the impact of interventions designed for the families of OCD treatment refusers (TR). Brief Family Consultation (BFC) was developed by our clinical team to help families refocus their efforts on the things that they can realistically control and change (e.g., participation in compulsions). In this crossover study, twenty families related to an individual who exhibited OCD symptoms but had refused treatment were assigned to five phone sessions of either BFC or a psychoeducation condition. Compared to this credible, attention-placebo control group (Brief Educational Support; BES), BFC (but not BES) resulted in reductions in family accommodation behavior, yet neither BFC nor BES resulted in improved quality of life for family members of treatment refusers. BFC is one of the first interventions to be evaluated for its ability to help families when their loved ones with obsessive compulsive symptoms refuse treatment. This pilot study provides new insights for clinicians and researchers to better address the needs of these neglected families

The Exclusive Economic Zone - The Elusive Consensus

    Get PDF
Despite bold assertions to the contrary the concept of an economic zone of exclusive coastal State jurisdiction is not unknown to modern international law of the sea. What is new is the choice of terminology employed to describe the concept and its identification with the countries of the Third World. As with the development of other norms relating to State interaction in ocean space, the concept of the exclusive economic zone reflects the interplay of economic, political and strategic interests which characterizes the problems of the law of the sea in the twentieth century

Lessons Learned from Client Projects in an Undergraduate Project Management Course

    Get PDF
This work proposes that a subtle combination of three learning methods offering ‘just in time’ project management knowledge, coupled with hands-on project management experience can be particularly effective in producing project management students with employable skills. Students were required to apply formal project management knowledge to gain real-world experience managing a 12-week client project. ‘Lessons Learned’ reports prepared by 112 students enrolled from Fall 2009 - Fall 2011 were collected and analyzed to assess the student experience. Analysis of the ‘lessons learned’ data illustrates the challenges and successes students faced as project managers of a client project in seven of the nine project management knowledge areas. Finally, a number of ‘teachable moments’, made possible by the innovative learning environment, including the difference between conceptual learning and experiential learning with respect to integration, risk, communication and HR management and the difference between ‘leading’ and ‘managing’, demonstrate the added value of integrating hands-on skills with ‘just in time’ knowledge to create an authentic project management learning environment
